Deathclaws can easily kill a character regardless of level if you're caught unprepared, with their armour-piercing attacks.

A sneak critical with a high-damage weapon is your best bet.

So, use a sniper rifle and aim for their heads moreso than crippling their legs?

I was starting to wonder if sniper rifles even existed in this game... other than finding ammo for them, I couldn't find the darn gun itself for the longest time. Then, finally found one in some moonshiner's basement last night and totally paraphrased John McClain from "Die Hard": "Ho ho ho, I've gotta sniper rifle!" Image IPB

Sounds like it's time for me and Boone to go climb some mountains and snipe the quarry deathclaws, then. Image IPB

Any type of special ammo I should use (armor piercing, hollowpoint, etc)? Or just regular is fine as long as I use a high damage weapon from a distance?

Or you can try find the alien blaster but you must have wild wastelander trait.

Gauss rifle works well too.

Crippling their legs was most useful in fallout 3 when you had dart gun now is quick kill the way to go.

Oh nothing drastic... but if you take it, he's annoyed with you and says something like, "I'd really like my beret back, please."  I just thought it was funny because you could ask him if he ever takes it off, and he replies, "No."  It's strange, because I gave him a helmet to carry for me once, and he put it on instead.  What about your beret, big guy?

The first time I asked that and got his response, I had total Sten flashbacks. And then couldn't stop giggling over that bizarre connection. Image IPB

Hahaha!  I was totally considering describing it as a Sten-like response!   Gotta love the Bioware forums... any other time I have a conversation, no one would get it if I said something was Sten-like.

Well I have the annoying black mountain radio conversations stuck in my head other than the pleasant songs. Anyway, I've made 1500 caps from Caravan :D

Ha, that's funny.  I like him a lot.  He is definitely a good stand-in for Charon.  Has the same kind of 'tude, and with his deadly aim and high perception, he serves the same function.  As well as charging into battle before I'm ready and getting in front of my shot!

It makes me a little misty to hear that "******" of his combat knife coming out!  Aww, Charon!!

How do you have him sight for you??  I also was wondering about sniper rifles.  Sniper is my favorite profile, and I'm doing okay with the hunting rifles so far, but I'd like something with a bit more power.

Yeah, I've met Cass and Arcade, but there's no way I want to replace Boone.  I gave him some big lawnmower blade knife, the "Liberator" - he looks totally badass running at people with that thing!

The Spotter perk highlights the enemy's whole body red in your gun's sight.  Just makes them easier to spot - especially at night or from far away.  Man, I need a sniper rifle, too.  I saw one for sale at the Gun Runners, but I was hoping to find one and not have to pay for it.  Maybe I'll just go back and buy it... me 'n Boone could drop some Legionnaires with that baby.

Addai,

I miss my Charon, too! So far, there's a female scientist ghoul (Calamity) and the Mexican mechanic ghoul (Raul) that you can recuit as followers, but it's just not the same. And that's saying something since I'm generally a huge pro-Ghoul player (when they aren't all feral and/or insane... *flashbacks to pro-Ghoul biting me in the ass at Tenpenny Towers*). I desired having neither one tag along. I do believe Boone shall stick with me until the end. Although, reading ahead about him a bit has been disappointing only in that a rather interesting/drama-filled theory of mine regarding his past is apparently... well, just a rather interesting/drama-filled theory and not reality. Image IPB Would like to see an AU fanfic spawn out of that by somebody, though. Just have no idea if anyone else had a similar crackpot theory to me or not.

Addai & Tentura,

I have literally found only one place where you can get a free sniper rifle. For reference, I have played main questline only up to completing Great Khans in Boulder City. Have not set a foot in New Vegas yet. I've been focusing on exploring the countryside and doing random quests. So, I wandered into Camp Forlorn Hope. In the main commander's tent, there's a chick operating the radio who gives you a quest to seek out a bunch of ranger stations. The ranger station in the far northwest corner of the map (I *think* it's Ranger Station Foxtrot) is near where I found the sniper rifle. If you make a diagonal line from Camp McCarran towards that ranger station, going over hills and such, you should come to an area flooded with those annoying yellow, flying, stinging insects (weird C-name). There's a little shack there called something-Moonshiners-something-or-other. If you've got high enough lockpick, you can go into the basement and then the gun cabinet. Nice sniper rifle in there that's in pretty decent shape starting out.

That may or may not help, but it's the best directions I can give. If y'all have more locations near that general area that you have found, let me know and I can try and help pinpoint it for you with added directions/references. Just not sure how familiar you are with the area (i.e. don't know if Vault 22 or Jacobstown ring any bells for you).

Wha-wha?  I think I may have found this while I was mountain-climbing for like 2 hours trying to find a way to Foxtrot (grrr!).  Are you referring to "Brewer's Beer Bootlegging?"  I opened the gun case there... no snipey for me?  Maybe the contents are random?   Boo!  I've heard there's also a sniper rifle in Vault 34, but I was going crazy getting lost in there, so I left.  I guess I'll have to go back there.

I raided Vault 34 for a quest.  Their armory is filled with all kinds of goodies.  I won't spoil what though.  Will save you a lot of caps and make a lot with merchants who can afford high end gear. :)

I declined Boone and picked up Veronica.  I won't spoil anything but will say she has a very interesting questline that takes you to places you'll want to visit. I haven't touched the main questline either yet.  Running around doing everything else.

So I've heard!  ;)  I don't know why I was having such trouble with 34, maybe it was because it was late at night and I was tired.  But I was so sick of going through rad-x and rad-away that I just had to leave.  I think I'm pretty close to the armory in the quest.  I got the second password or whatever from the 2nd flooded area.  I just couldn't for the LIFE of me find the terminal to enter it, and I kept feeling like I was going in circles (which I guess I probably was).  Maybe I'll go back tonight... I can not leave a quest unfinished.  Plus - the armory!

Out of curiosity, I looked up where you find Veronica, since I hadn't met her.  I don't know how I've not found that place yet.  It's right smack in the middle of a bunch of places I've already visited.  I love wandering the wastes... there is soooo much to discover!  Now... off to vault 34.

Not yet, I haven't wandered too far out of the Primm- Nipton- Novac area yet.  Me n' Boone just cleared out the very appropriately named Scorpion Gulch.  Since he insisted on running at them with his combat knife, I let him be bait while I sniped from the rocks above.  Works for me!

But yeah, picking off some legionaries sounds like a good idea.  If you want to be evil in this game, they definitely qualify.  Very creative take on a slaver faction.

Phew!  Just completed the quest, got out of 34... with my sniper rifle!!  What a horrible vault.  Now to put me in a better mood... it's off to pierce some Legionairre domes!  :police:  <-- closest thing to a first recon beret.

The Vaults in this game seem to be the hardest places. I guess I've only been to two of them, but they've been my only real challenges so far.

I am on the second character I started. I dont find it to be that bad. Gotta be more carefull and bumping up the survival skill some pays off.
I've also stuck more to the main quests and so far.
Another thing about hardcore that crossed my mind. SInce the first character was a gun user I went melee and that saves a little bit of trouble with not having to carry ammo around.
Its great that melee and sneaking have seemed to gotten some love from the Obsidian. Much more viable then in FO3.
Giant Radscorps: The legs are really weak so a well thrown dynamite or granade can disable in one hit. With a explosives of around 35 could do it with 2. That or the thermic lance. Just got it and  it melts things. Gonna go try it out on a deathclaw. I will prolly still get eaten.

Jeez I'm reading about people who have already beaten the game and people who have done practically everything this game has to offer...

Either their liars or have no life or jobs because with my job I haven't been able to play it that much and even when I'm playing it I'm taking my time seeing the sights... I'm 20 hours in and I haven't even seen the strip yet.
