Okay, I just had my best facepalm moment ever last night... and I also have a random musing. Both contain spoliers, so considered yourself warned...

My facepalm moment: I'm finally doing the NCR embassy quests. I've pretty much run around and done most of the random wasteland stuff and finally started on the "main quest"-seeming stuff. I was asked to stop some trouble in Freeside and I had already called in my favor with the King (should have known I ought to save that...). So, that meant I had to kill Pacer and make it look like the Van Graffs did it.
So, there I was. Had Boone and Rex waiting halfway down the street out of view. I slip on a stealth boy and sneak my way up to Pacer's room. I ready the tri-beam laser the Brotherhood of Steel gave me. I have Pacer lined up in VATS and nobody has a clue I'm there. The perfect crime. I target him, click fire... and realize, in my utter stupidity, that I had NO MF cells. And then I recalled that not too long before, I had sold them to a random trader because I pretty much never use energy weapons... and I had been drinking heavily by that point in the game in real life, so I just sold the energy weapon ammo for the cash (that I didn;t need at all, really) without even thinking about it (old habit).
*facepalm*
The ironic part was that I got to skip down to Silver Rush and buy the MF cells, then go back and repeat the whole scenario again and pin the blame on the Van Graffs. It's kinda their fault. They did sell me the MF cells I used to kill Pacer and frame them.

Now, my random musing... Benny ran off after I confronted him (I should have killed him, but hindsight's 20-20). Afterwards, douchebag Legion dude from Nipton, Vulpes Inculcuta or something like that (I probably should have killed him back in Nipton, but Ghost said not to be an idiot and attacking a bunch of Legion dudes and their mongrels seemed like that would be an iditoic thing to do by myself at low level), hands me the mark of Caesar.
So, I literally have an audience with the head of the entire Legion and have supposed immunity based on this Mark of Caesar necklace they gave me. That screams "perfect assassination attempt" to me. Even if it's a suicide run. So, I talk to the NCR ambassador at the Strip embassay... no dialogue option. He sends me to Commander Moore over at Hoover Dam (and I'm thinking this has GOT to be nearing the end of things). And I think that surely she would be interested by this sudden development that the person who's been helping NCR suddenly has the chance to go stand in front of Caesar himself. And potnetially KILL HIM. Nope, no dialogue option.
Seriously. Does nobody in NCR care that I have been granted this rare opportunity? Sure, I'm betting it's a total trap and that I have a snowball's chance of actually getting out of there alive... but still, out of everything NCR has done to stop Caesar, how many of them have had the chance to go potentially ring the dude's neck and then run like hell? You'd think SOMEBODY would take an interest in it.
Weird. Just totally weird to me.
