As stated before, those choices were deliberately tailored to cut out as much import content as possible.

The Default Shepard is meant for new
players and removes (kills off) most character because new players don't
know them (so they don't get confused). It's also like you didn't do
any sidequests or romanced anyone

Just cause people don't like the descisions (or lack there of) doesn't not make it legit....
if you're looking at playing it true to life then you wouldn't do the side-missions!
Until someone from Bioware specifically states what the "canon" storyline IS then it's all just speculation!

Bioware have stated that the default for ME 2 was designed to minimise refrences to the first game to accomodate new players.

as of right now there is no "official" canon shepard. Books have been very ambiguous to speak of shepard with "he" or "she" or any physical descriptions.

Anyway femshep fans will absolutely refuse anything as canon, unless the mods will tell us, and ofc they will never tell us because that would alienate a large portion of the community.

Male shep has featured in advertisements, merchandise, and trailers, and pretty sure hes canon.....

Why do people think the ads are cannon?

One of the ads says Grunt is 300 years old.

The ads are just bull**** made up to sell the game.

I am one of those butthurt fans that get really mad when people say "canon" instead of "default". Canon means that BioWare chooses your path regardless of the decisions you made.

Default simply means that these are the choices picked when personal ones lack.

/signed....and by now I sometimes catch myself using the word 'canon' which I hate even more :pinched:

My main Shepard and the one I'll import first into ME3 has all of the main and side-quests(availlable ones) done and all of the decisions are the ones I like the most and also suit the character of my Shepard. I'd say, do the same with yours.

And if you really want the BW default...just wait until ME3 is out and create a character there which then uses the default decisions :-)

And that's why I picked the word "canon."  "Default" settings are there already, and they suck.  They gimp the game down.  I used "canon" figuratively because it was the word closest  to what I meant.

TheSeventhJedi is coming up with a character that stays true to what Shep is marketed as and what various other little hints and messages shape shepard out to be in TheSeventhJedis mind. I agree from what I've seen that Sheploo is Earthborn, Sole Survivor and generally renagadish, this is what I get off of the aforementioned various either default or marketing choices starting from ME1. I think he is portrayed more as a Soldier then Vanguard though.

Other then Earthborn and Sheploo face, none of that is what *MY* canon Shep is.

You all are getting WAY to caught up in wording and arguing over 'OMG NO CANON', the point of the post is easy to see, roll with it.

In BW's data collection of ME2 players more people have played soldier class than all others combined so if there ever were to be a "cannonized" Shepard, there you go. After that I'd say it'd probably appeal to most if he was a mix of ren and par. Maybe something like Wolverine meets Batman? Two examples are the quarian getting mistreated by the Volus and C-Sec officer. My Ren Shep always does the paragon interrupt despite being an evil psychopath. The other example is on Thane's LQ when you get to "interrogate" that one guy. My paragon will either be a Spectre and threaten him that way or otherwise beat the hell out of them.

So there yah go, pretty fitting for a "cannon" Shepard if that's what BW decides to spring for in the movie. Then again I'm also pretty sure plenty of people would disagree with both of those examples so...?

Here's what one of the devs had to say back in the olde forum:

"Cannonical" is really a bad word for it. Cannonical implies that "this
is the way it really happened." The way it really happened was the way you
played it - a lot of trouble has gone into making sure the
supplementary stuff (novels, comics, etc) doesn't conflict with any
possible playthrough.

A better term would be "default." Default
Shepard made whatever choices in the first game that make it easiest to
follow the plot if you didn't play ME1. So, essentially, default Shepard
didn't run around meeting a lot of people in the first game whose
previous interactions we'd have to explain in an awkward fashion in ME2
(as in, Shepard should know who they are but the player won't) and
picked a lot of default dialog options.

You don't get what canon means do you.

No, I do - trust me, I do.  I get that there isn't a canon Shep when BW defines it.  However, there are quite a few things that tend to be considered "canon."  For instance - Shep tends to lean towards renegade decisions.  They've never said that, and aside from the default opening of ME2, there's nothing to make that clear, but in their marketing, we tended to see Shep being a badass, pushing people through windows, etc.  From the marketing, we can guess that Sheploo is the "canon."  See where I'm going with this?  I'm also making all decisions that are rewarded by continuing the story.  I made a pure renegade Shepard, and it was like I didn't even import, because everyone was dead!  Wrex - dead.  Conrad - dead.  Kaidan - well, I kill him every time regardless.  Rachni Queen - dead.  Gianna Parasini - dead.  Feros Colony - dead.  I was totally renegade, and I was kinda punished for it.  So, to take Miracle Max's advice, I'll only be mostly renegade, and make the paragon decisions that are rewarded by continued story.

As for the Vanguard comment, that's kinda just "canon" for me.

Things that are considered canon are few are far in between. Saren's dead, Benezia's dead, Shep was the first human spectre, Shep defeated Soverign and Shep dies at the beginning of ME2.
'
Those are the most basic. There aren't many forced choices. Sure you get 2 options but hey an option's an option.

And Sheploo is marketing. That's like saying everything in the ads was true. *Heck Thane's voice magically changed :pinched:
