I was wondering if i could get some help with my knights of the old
republic game. I used to be able to play this game quite well on windows
vista, but was forced to reformat my laptop to windows 7 and now
neither kotor or kotor2 will play. The game installs perfectly fine, but
when i get to the main screen the screen flashes like a strobe light
and the character models are completely messed up, the eyes will be on
one side of the screen while other parts of the body will be flipped
inside out and spread around the rest of the screen. During an actual
game these same problems persist.

These are the specs for my system:

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.100618-1621)

Language: English (Regional Setting: English)

System Manufacturer: TOSHIBA

System Model: Satellite A215

BIOS: Ver 1.00PARTTBL

Processor: AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 (2 CPUs), ~2.0GHz

Memory: 2048MB RAM

Available OS Memory: 1918MB RAM

Page File: 1548MB used, 2287MB available

Windows Dir: C:\\\\Windows

DirectX Version: DirectX 11

Card name: ATI Radeon X1200 Series

Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.

Chip type: ATI Radeon X1200 Series (0x791F)

I have tried to update my video card drivers by using the automatic
installer and even downloaded the catalyst manager for ati radeon x1200
and it didn't fix it. Any help would be appreciated

edit: i have tried this game in all compatibility modes

I am not sure about 64 bit windows 7 but with 32 bit ultimate you can install direct x 9 and then games that need it to run will actually work in most cases. I recently had my regular gaming machine motherboard fail so I had to put together an older Pemtium 4 system with and old AGP graphics display card. Alot of my older games would not work until I install directx 9 which I found at microsoft for download for windows 7.

All I did was create a restore point before I installed directx 9

The chances are that there isn't any Radeon video driver "old enough" for this (these) game(s) while also being new enough for Windows 7. AMD / ATI has always been better at supporting Direct3D than OpenGL, and these games are OpenGL, not Direct3D, so for Windows 7, you practically have to use a Geforce card, or stick with the older Windows versions.

So, even if we will install dx9.0c it still won't work if we own an ATI/Radeon card.

Probaly isn't the right time to list this, but I feel its loosely related and I want to share it for anyone else in the same issue. I managed to get Sith Lords to work on my PC okay but just switching the compatability over to Vista: Service Pack 1. Hope this helps someone, and if it does work PLEASE spread it around.

I found a possible permanent fix for KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2 on Vista and 7.  Take a look over here.

I'm a person who, up until now, hasn't had to worry about his computer's hardware. Can anyone direct me to a beginner's guide?
