At any rate, your idea = lame. What's with people and trying to force "hurr Shepurd shuld get some1 preggerz dat'd be SO DEEP AND MEANINGFULZ" into Mass Effect. It wouldn't be deep. It wouldn't be meaningful. It wouldn't be interesting. It'd just be melodramatic and boring, and catering to all of the fantards obsessed with having babies with their preferred LI.

Not to mention the "baybee" plot is often used by lazy writers when their show (movie sequals) have lost people's interest, it's a last resort for a reason. Bioware has (so far) been a breath of fresh air, I was so happy when I played DA and my epilogue didn't have "and then they had baaaaaaybees" tacked on the end, thank goodness.

A parent on this board once made a wonderful point, she said she just could not imagine shepard thinking of having kids as her/his role (saving the galaxy) was far too time consuming and important to even consider tossing it all aside like that. I think this demand for shepard  having kids DESPITE the fact her/his role in the story would make having children a hindrance (and very irresponsible to them given her/his responsibilities) is just people projecting their limited imagination onto a character that has limitless possibilities on what he/she can do. Showing progression does not mean every character has to follow the LifeScriptTM , you can fall more in love , become more mature and have a greater appreciation for life without needing to breed in order to achieve it.

In short: Shepard's already a parent. They're busy babysitting the whole damned universe.

On an actually serious note, do you know how completely, totally different the game experience would've been for me if I'd seen the Collectors take even one small child the way they took Kelly?

You'd hear no more "the Collectors were an unmotivating enemy" from me.

To be honest I didn't find the Collectors that creepy; your suggestion would change everything.

The problem with having children in games is that they are usually voiced by adults with whiny singsong voices so the kids end up resembling Gollum more than a child. Deadrising 2 comes to mind...

Prior to Mass Effect, many games simply didn't have serious voice acting. Who voiced the kids in DAO?

there are teenagers in mass effect... that kid you find in the ducts during thanes loyalty mission.

Mouse can't be much older then early twenties...

so it's not like bioware forgot about them completely. In Mass Effect 2 you tend to go places where you wouldn't expect to see many children anyway, like Omega, Afterlife, Illium's buissness district, the only place you might see children is the Citadel and maybe freedoms progress. Children would tend to be in more secure living areas, not areas of high crime, and military activity.

I want to just say something about children in Mass Effect and being able to kill them.

1. Children should be in Mass Effect. More emotionally gripping and it would be nice to see how other races age.

2. About the whole killing children in the game. Hell no! Shepard isn't a monster and isn't a villian. Paragon and Renegade are two sides of the same coin. Shepard is a hero. How does Space Jesus = Child Killer?

Play any JRPG to see how stereotypically annoying kids (and slightly disturbing) are. :)

We know of at least one child (Jake) in the galaxy, so it isn't Children of Men. I'm pretty sure that kids are not allowed in space.

Kids would be great, but I'd like to see the mysteriously absent female turians, salarians, batarians and krogan first.

You've already seen a female Krogan she's in the same room as the shamen on their home planet turchanka (or however you spell it). She looks just like a male Krogan, but if you talk to her you'll notice she has a slightly higher pitched voice. She'll also say something along the lines of, "I am the ambassador for the female clan why are you bothering me human?" And a few other lines too. As for Turians and Salarians I wouldn't mind seeing them either.

Children are a great way to up the emotional stakes.
Clearly, though BioWare thought it wasn't worth the investment.

1.Kids getting killed/harmed/bad situations raises game ratings.
Which doesnt matter in mass effect, its already there with sexual encounters.

Sexual content is rated differently to violent content. And i have read that it is actually illegal in some countries to show children being killed in a video game.

Actually they could bring in kids but in areas like Citadel Zakera Ward or Illium Nos Astra Port where you can't drawn your weapon, thus can't harm them.

The kids are in school. Sheesh just leave em there. The last thing I need is some kid running around while I'm trying to do a headshot on someone. I don't need temptation. Kidding all! :) But really I would guess the kids are in school of some sort and are only mentioned which is fine with me.

It's not? I always thought it was a female. He/she has a higher voice as mentioned, and is also of slightly lighter build than the other Krogan. Oh well...

He's not of lighter build and he while he is an ambassador he's not representing a female clan. His model is the same as any other krogan and you can hear what he actually says about himself if you play that bit again.

why do people care so much about children dying.

to quote Dr. House (yes the tv show) "oh no, she can't get a flesh eating disease, shes just a kid, grow up! kids die like anyone else!" or something around those lines

like he says, children die to murder, diseases, and natural causes, they have no immunity to death in real life, why should they in a game? whats the point?

Best not to have children in the ME world, they might get eaten by Krogans.
