So I was looking to see if there was a thread about which weapon taken on the Collector ship people preferred, and I was surprised to find none at all. So I was just wondering out of all three choices, the Widow, AR, and shotgun which did you guys prefer. I've played through an Infiltrator class three times, and have chosen all of them. Overall, I'll have to say I found the shotgun most useful. I play very aggressively, so I'm usually not too distanced from the enemy. It seemed like the Mantis, except when dealing with krogan, was plenty powerful enough even without the upgrades. The Widow was plenty good, but really didn't seem like too much of a step-up from Mantis to me. Probably the best gun, but felt like a wasted choice to me. The AR was really good to me, but I found the whole experience lacking. I would use mostly the Avenger or Geth Pulse Rifle, and most of the time I would use that instead of the sniper. It felt like a huge crutch to me, and that most of the Infiltrator's talents went wasted.

So, what do you think?

Most common choice is widow (because it's the ultimate SR in this game) or shotgun (for those who like to do a lot of cqc).

I haven't seen many infiltrators using the assault rifle.

I don't think any Infiltrator main I've ever met takes assault rifles. I've seen shotgun Infiltrators as well as Widow Infiltrators. Both are common because both are extremely effective.

Lately I've been thinking about picking up the AR bonus especially with the Mattock as my weapon of choice.

Well. I've been wrong before.

I've played two infiltrator playthroughs and no matter how tempted I am to pick shotgun or AR, I can't. I just... can't.

There is one on the first page ;)  http://social.biowar...1/index/4445581
Shotguns are really fun on infiltrators. Especially the GPS.

I've done the Widow and I'm currently using an Infiltrator with a shotgun. I like shotgun better. The Viper is my choice when I need to snipe. I can put out enough damage quickly so I don't miss the Widow. Sneaking up on someone and shotgunning them with cloak is pretty fun. I could see a few spots where the Mattock would be nice to have but if you use the Locust SMG, you don't really need an AR.

If it wasn't for the infiltrator's passive giving the sniper rifle specific bonuses, I would probably remove them from the loadout. It's not like snipers are necessary in any of the fights in the game - there are no real long range fights. Some of the ranges in ME1 were much longer (especially on uncharted worlds), and you could take your time and set up in some of the encounters, so the SR makes more sense. I don't know; it just feels weird, fast paced running and gunning, especially with the widow.

Of course, I still love using them; I just wish there were some extremely long range battles allowing them to shine.

I'm a big fan of running + gunning with the Viper on the infiltrator, it's like a mini-ARush that you can constantly chain together by quickly zoom in and out. Whenever there are a group of enemies coming out of elevators or trucks, you can use the time dilation to aim and pop a few rounds, wait for it to end, and then you can activate cloak to emtpy the whole clip on them. It also works great on the Reaper IFF mission because of this.

played though w/ each and it totally what you what range you want to play at.

widow is the long range weapon of choice if fact it seems the class is built around it.

shotguns for upclose and personal kills

the ARs are do-able but really don't fit the class.

The Widow is a beast! Most things die with a single headshot (paired with an ammo power. Heavy warp ammo is neat).

I actually tried an AR infiltrator as an experiment a while back (with the Mattock) and I didn't much care for it. Without the time dilation that you get from using a scoped weapon, it just didn't seem terribly useful. And if you're going CQC, then a shotgun is a much better choice.

My last playthrough was as an infiltrator with the Mattock, and it was tons of fun. The Mattock does a pretty good job of sniping targets at medium to long range, and I find using it less jarring than always going in and out of time dilation with a sniper rifle. For the really long-range targets I used the Viper, and while it wasn't quite as satisfying as doing one-shot kills with the Widow, it was still good enough. Big ammo capacities on 3 weapons (SMG, AR and semi-auto SR) also took away much of the annoyance factor from running out of bullets.

I think Tactical Cloak, Incinerate + Locust eliminate any real need for assault rifles for the infiltrator, which is why these two options have always been more popular. Both shotgun training and the Widow offer clear improvements to the infiltrator's game by providing much-needed close range punch and a big boost to burst damage, respectively.
