The issue is, that if you side with Bodhi before talking to the Shadow Thieves first, you will not get the Mae'Var quest line and consequently never be able to recruit Edwin, locked away in his guild headquarters.
There are loads of threads adressing this and they usually either remain unanswered or suggest complicated console games that can mess up everything a lot more if you make a mistake.
So I hope this "easy" workaround will help people when this thread pops up via search engines.
This requires cheating.
1) To enable the Baldur's Gate 2 cheats you have to modify your "baldur.ini" file by adding the line "Debug Mode=1" under the heading [Program Options]. Then save it. This unlocks cheat hotkeys and the console (ctrl+space).
2) Enter the Mae'Var guild house, teleport your party past the unlockable doors with CTRL+J. Head downstairs and talk to the guild master. This will begin the quest chain, ultimately enabling you to recruit Edwin after several quests. Being the evil, arrogant mage we all love so well, he will leave the party if your reputation is over 17.
3) He will join you for the purpose of stealing Mae'Var's documents. Usually you would have to take them to the Shadow Thieves now. Since they are hostile, this quest is a dead end - but you still got alot of experience from the other quests you finished.
4) Now go to Bodhi and continue her quest line, which will lead to you destroying the (hostile) Shadow Thieves guild anyway. This part of the quest is possible with Edwin per design and except for that you never finish the Mae'Var quests as intended, everything will work out just fine from here.
I hope this will help anyone who decided against helping Yoshimo or the Shadow Thieves per se but just can't get enough of red robes. Feel free to loot and kill Mae'Var's guild as well as soon as you have Edwin with you.
