I played BG1&2 years ago, and have recently come back to them. I just went through BG1 with a Paladin and the standard party of Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc, and Dynaheir. I remembered little things about that game, so for example I knew it was a good idea to give Imoen 100 in Locks and Traps so I could properly do Durlag's Tower. My memory isn't so good on this game however. I've imported my Paladin and chosen the Undead Hunter kit, since I thought that would be a good beginner class. Anyway, I'm taking a standard-ish party again, in Jaheira, Minsc, Yoshimo, and Aerie. I intend to replace Yoshimo with Imoen later in the game, and I'll finally fill the 6th party spot with a character when I get to that place in TOB.

Anyway, to the point, Yoshimo just levelled up for the first time after completing the circus subquest, and I have no idea what I should be spending his thieving points on. Like I said I'll replace him with Imoen later on in the game, so I just need to know what points are best for up until that point. I intend to do most of the subquests before then. I've read that Detect Illusions is the least useful? I've also read that Hide in Shadows and Move Silently are the same thing and just accumulate with each other?

There's plenty of threads around about thieving skills, but I wanted to make one about this situation specifically. Any input is appreciated.

Locks and Traps should be around 100 to be an efficient Thief up until Imoen.
Hide in Shadows and Move SIlently do merge together when stealthing, if you intend on using him as a backstabber then max them out.
Set Traps is incredibly useful and slightly overpowered in vanilla Baldur's Gate (no mods), if memory serves (no pun intended) his Set Traps is abismally low for a Bounty Hunter. More useful in the long run.
Detect Illusions is, in my opinion, very useful. It works more or less the same as the True Seeing spell, except you need to be detecting traps for it to take effect unlike True Seeing. But you can attack while deteching traps, which some people see as an exploit of the game engine, depends how you see it (no pun intended again).

Sorry, I should have posted his default thieving skills:

Locks: 65

Find Traps: 100

Pickpocket: 25

Move Silently: 100

Hide in Shadows: 55

Illusions: 0

Set Traps: 35

He gets 20 points to spend per level. He's starts at level 10. What level will he most likely be by the time I get to Imoen if I intend to do most (if not all) of the subquests?

It depends largely on the size of your party. With a smaller party, let's say of 3-4 members (including PC) he could hit the 3 Million XP I guess. With a full party, 1.5 - 2 million XP (depends also, do you have ToB? If so, do you intend to complete Watcher's keep before rescuing Imoen?). So I guess he may be somewhere around level 15-24 depending on the party size (I may be wrong though, don't know the exact XP values)

What are you trying to do with Yoshimo first of all? Is he your only thief? Do you want him to backstab? Here's what I would do in your situation. There are alot of invisibility rings in the game which can be purchased from Ribald, so no need for points in hide in shadows or move silently. The cleric Aerie(or any other cleric) can buff holy power/righteous magic/draw upon holy might and smash any lock open. The wizard spell knock can do the same thing. No need for detect illusions(at least in the vanilla game). Use true sight with your wizard instead. What I would try to max is his set traps ability and detect traps. Have him disarm all traps for you, as well as use his bounty hunter specific traps, which will make the game that much easier for you.

Note: Max his find traps first.

P.S: Oh, I see that's already max, then just max his 'set traps'

Also probably worth noting you shouldn't go higher than 100 in Locks, Traps, Illusions and Set Traps (I think Set Traps has a success cap of 100?), anything higher than that is a wasted point.
All the others should exceed 100.

Meh, just get Jan. He's not really the greatest for being Mr. Backstab. His thief side leans towards the traditional 'adventurer' thief: traps and locks, all that. Load him with dispelling spells and he's perhaps much more useful than Yoshimo could ever be. As much as people will say his bounty hunter traps are nice, they just seem like cheesy ways to oneshot dragons and the like.

I agree. Apart from the cheese Yoshimo adds to your party with his traps, he's not a very good thief. In fact no thief compares to even a mediocre PC thief, imho. I still take them with me because I like my PC to be damagedealer and/or tank.

Why even take Yoshimo? Pretty sure most of us know how that story ends. I like him as a characer, but there's no point in building him. You may as well grab someone else who will be more permanent.
