This thread is Pacifen approved.B)
~~
This topic came up in the General Discussion area and I thought it wouldn't hurt to make a new thread expressing my frustration with the aim assist feature in the console version of Mass Effect 2. I know that because of the imprecise control offered by analogue sticks there will always be some sort of aim assist working in the background, but when it becomes a noticeable hinderance in gameplay, the phrase "aim assist" can only be thought of as ironic! I have lost count over how many shots I've missed because the game yanked my crosshair to the left or right due to enemies in the foreground and background. The problem is compounded when using Adrenaline Rush or any single shot weapon.

Mass Effect 1 gave the player the option to change the degree of aim assist offered. I would love for Mass Effect 3 to provide console players with that same degree of freedom; hell, even the option to turn it off! Please feel free to post here about the issue. I'm not sure if I should make a poll or worry about this thread being closed but comments are appreciated.

Poll for topic:

social.bioware.com/1562460/polls/11931/

Here's a video sample, courtesy of ScroguBlitzen, of what snipers experience:

And one that I made:

Edit: ScroguBlitzen posted a new thread about a fix for the snap-lock aim issue when using sniper rifles: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/103/index/5414093/1 . Please check it out.

This thread is indeed Pacifien approved because aim assist ruins Pacifien's sniper's day.

Wow, I'm actually surprised that this hasn't been brought up before .. but I guess my thread in the general discussion forum opened people's eyes.

Because of the AA, I don't want to be a sniper for a long time. It's a huge turn-off for a Soldier, especially with the Widow/Mantis.

Signed.

Thanks for the comments so far. I created a simple poll for the thread: social.bioware.com/1562460/polls/11931/. Please vote, especially my fellow console users!

I agree with this despite playing exclusively on my PC. I want everyone to enjoy the game to its fullest, not just the glorious PC gaming master race.

Rivercurse signs the petition. This is infuriating with weapons that take time to reload such as the widow.

Oh yeah, I would love for there to be an option to turn it off (or make it low/medium/heavy).

It needs to be removed or at least the player given the ability to shut it off.

There are literally times when it is impossible to scope things - like the shield generators in Jack's recruitment mission - because of enemies in between the player and the target. It is way too intrusive. Also, the auto scoping when a caster class throws a power is a major flaw too. These two things really, bring sniper gameplay down several notches in the game.

O.O I never even knew there was an shooting aim assist. It never seemed to hinder my gameplay experience. Or do you mean how the closest enemy's stats are displayed, indicating a lock on for powers?

Aim assist--and I mean really good aim assist--should be something that is not even noticed by the player. I know that in the grand scheme of things this might be seen as a minor gripe but it does affect gameplay negatively. I seriously doubt it would take much effort for the programmers to bring back the control options we had in ME1. Glad to see that others are responding. :)

For console shooters aim assist helps compensate for the lack of precision with analogue controls. Sometimes that feature screws the player over by moving your crosshair to other enemies that may have moved into the foreground or background of your current target; like an invisible hand yanking your gun around. Mass Effect 2 is the only game I have played where such a feature becomes a glaring problem in the middle of a firefight.

I wholeheartedly agree about aim assist. It makes my Widow Soldier frustrating.

Agreed. How hard is it to just provide the option to turn it off? While you're at it, please give us back the ability to crouch in Mass Effect 3, if only for the sniper roleplaying aspect it adds.

I've seen a friend play who wasn't that good at sniping, and he would just scope in near them, and wait for the enemy to come into view and would let it drag the crosshairs until the enemy lined up with the shot. That works right there, I've seen it benefit, but it can be detrimental to others. I'm not saying I'm better than anybody who needs auto-aim and I should be specifically accommodated to while others struggle, and sometimes never get better, but a simple (?) switch can change up a lot to benefit both parties

Largely do not have this problem since I play on PC but can understand the frustration (Hammerhead "smart" rockets frustration).

Options to toggle aim-assistant on/off or even "Do not Assist during scoping" are surly welcomed.

I agree, they should bring back the choice(s) from ME1. I've actually been 'rag-dolled' a couple of times because I had to make the adjustment & lost track of the other enemies, during my first play-through.

Allow me to provide an example. I was doing Mordin's Recruitment Mission one day, and after inserting the cure, I went towards the first fan. At one point, I was wanting to kill a particular Vorcha, so I scoped in, popped Adrenaline Rush, and went to do the final adjustments to headshot him. Unfortunately for me, this particular Vorcha was moving to my right. Now, I tried to compensate for this, but the Aim Assist had other ideas. I have no idea what these ideas were, but my crosshair floated about a foot to the left of the Vorcha's head. I jammed the stick all the way to the right to try to overcompensate and regain control, but the Aim Assist would not let me line up the shot. I ended up unscoping, dropping back into cover, and waiting for Adrenaline Rush to cool down before trying again.

Now, had I been left to my own devices, I would have made the shot. I'm not a master of shooter games, but I can at least track a moving enemy and pop a shot so that it hits. Unfortunately, the Aim Assist was apparently on the Vorcha's side at that particular point, and I lost my shot.

As annoying as this is, this is a rather common occurence for me.

Yeah, whoever thought of that needs to be shot.

Shepard: I want to kill the enemy right in the crosshairs.

VI: No.

Shepard: Why not?

VI: Because I have randomly decided that the enemy off to the left needs to die first.

Shepard: But they're behind cover. There's now way for the rockets to hit, no matter how they're angled.

VI: Which is why he needs to die.

Shepard: *slams head against console*

^ The drag even happens when an enemy walks in front of your SR, whether or not they're in your view.

Think the Hammerhead is a good example to those with PCs about what is going on with the aim assist on the console. You can fire your rockets all day at the colossus, the rockets will just keep veering off to the side like it really wants to shoot down that geth prime instead. So it was with aim assist, I want to shoot the heavy in the distance, but the aim assist thinks I really wanted to shoot some other merc entirely.

God I despise using the hammer head. That's about the only time really hate aim assist. Maybe because I tend to play Close Quarters more than anything else, it's never been the big of a problem for me.

Thank you for the perfectly appropriate comparison. Now you PC people can begin to understand us console users' suffering. Like Tali, we want to feel what it's like to smell a flower without using filters.

I am extremely confused as to what is being referred to here as aim-assist. Are we speaking of the brackets that appear around enemies (and doors, consoles, etc.) when they are nearby and in 'front' of the player's vision? If not, then what?

If we are speaking about those brackets, in what way do they assist? Let me halve that question, because I have certainly fallen victim to them ruining my Incinerate by a different mob becoming the target at the last second, or the targeted mob moving just slightly out of range. On the other hand, I've also found great ways to manipulate this aim-assist by being able to blast around corners and over hurdles.

Regardless of biotics, we seem to be speaking of gun control aim-assist... and I have not experienced this at all. I am playing on the 360 only. The only assist I've noticed at all is the slow-down when aiming a sniper rifle with an Infiltrator class, but there's no way people are complaining about that, are they? I am not trying to be a wise guy here, I really don't understand what this aim-assist is.

I've read the complaints above and... I just don't experience what the rest of you are. With the hammerhead yes, of course, but again it is only aiming at what is in the brackets and the missiles control fire far more like Incinerate blasts then any guns. I've never had a bullet veer off and kill someone else, they always go exactly where I shoot. I've never encountered this 'drag' or 'locking' you are all talking about.
