Dear Bioware: Please "remove" Aim Assist!

 @Imperium Alpha-  True.  Unfortunately I only found a work-around for the Zoom-Snap, but the difficulty leading a target is caused by the Adhesion aim assist.

 As a frequent player of the Soldier class, Friction/Adhesion are my worst enemy when using adrenaline rush. Just when you need those precious few seconds of slow-down to carefully headshot an enemy, your cursor is mysteriously dragged to the left or right......

 I appreciate all the posts so far.:)  I hope that with more people expressing their frustration and experience with this wonky aim system the developers will notice and make some improvements for the next game.

@Flies- I was trying to move the discussion back in here so anyone interested would see it, but there is still a thread on general as well.



massive_effect did verify my workaround for the Mantis and Widow, but he also found that the Incisor has NO Zoom-Snap at all with the left or right trigger. Apparently there is a flag on the weapon itself that enables or disables Zoom-Snap.



So currently it looks like the work around is valid for the following sniper rifles:

Widow,Viper,Mantis => Use the Right trigger to start your zoom and you disable Snap-Zoom!

Incisor has no Snap Zoom (but unfortunately has no ammo either)

If you use the Right trigger to start your zoom and then switch to the left trigger (before you fire) then you don't get the Zoom-Snap towards your target.  This only works when you're docked in cover though since otherwise the right trigger just makes you hip-fire.

Interesting, so basically when in cover, don't use aim, just shoot first. Good find, I'll certainly give that a try.

Actually, when in cover the right trigger will zoom first and shoot a 1/2 second or so after holding it down.  So, you don't have to just shoot, you can right trigger to start your zoom, then quickly pull the left trigger and let go of the right and you will stay zoomed and then you can shoot normally.

It's pretty easy.  It's awesome to actually zoom to where you were pointing.  SOOO much easier to aim and hit lightning capacitors from a distance on the hagalaz hatch defense mission.

I dont have any problems with bullets straying, but then again, I dont have it enabled. You do realise there is a setting in the coalesced.ini file to turn aim assist on or off dont you?

also, when set to true, these settnigs take effect

[SFXGame.SFXModule_AimAssist]

GlobalFrictionFactor=1.0f;

GlobalAimCorrectionFactor=1.0f;

GlobalAdhesionFactor=(X=0.75,Y=0.5);

EnemyMovementAdhesionFactor=0.75;



Fiddle with the setting, recompile the ini, and away we go.

Well being on 360, dunno how that would keep between playthroughs, I've not tried that, nor am I sure how it works exactly.

I agree with this thread. I am a pretty good aim with a stick and it annoys me when I put the reticle right where I want it and the aim assist yanks it away from my intended target. I can not tell you how many head shots I have missed because of this.

I think I missed it.

[edit] ok, read it.  I haven't tried that before but I will Blitzen.  Unfortunately that doesn't solve what I know see was actually screwing me over last night, Adhesion.  It is impossible many times to lead moving targets fast enough to make headshots while they are on the go because of that crap. 

The fact that I as player can 'feel' this "assistance" in the game and actively have to try to fight it should be a clue to Bioware that it is not an assistance to the player at all.  The excuse "other shooters do it" is pretty weak.  Do you want to make the game feel better for players or not?

Agreed.  If a player can detect the aim assist, then the aim assist is broken.  Zoom-Snap is the worst, but adhesion and friction also mess you up.  I have to actively fight those when doing close combat shotgun work.

It might be a good idea to have the ability to turn off aim assist for specific weapons like as an example sniper rifles. Guns like assault rifles, SMGs, or shotguns could still have aim assist while precision weapons like pistols and sniper rifles can be disabled or whatever other combinations the player wants because everybody has different play styles. I hate it when I want to hit one enemy inthe back of a group with a sniper rifle and as soon as I get the headshot lined up some other guy runs in from of him and my reticle follows that guy instead of the guy I wanted to hit.  But when I switch to the shootgun I don't care who I hit as long as its the closest person to me.

It must just be me, but I've never noticed aim assist. And I've played every class in the game, including infiltrator multiple times.

Of course it's not made for high DPi mice when there are only 3 mouse sensitvty options, 3 sentivity options in a game that is essentially a shooter is poor by any standards.

Use the G5 myself, zero problems with sensitivity... so I just don't understand your issue.

As for auto Aim again PC user, so no idea what is going on, sounds like sticky targeting which I dislike, lol but I dislike cover as well :o

I was like you, played for months and never noticed it, but after looking at the videos that they posted you see what they are talking about.  Now whenever I play soldier its easy to see it.  You don't see it if you are sniping somebody that just pops his head out of cover ( my preferred target ) but it the target is moving at all you really see it.  Also, as they have said, if a closer target moves into the zoom-in area ( like a husk when you are about to hit a Scion on the Reaper IFF ) the aim will go for the husk.

My God, that aim assist is extreme in those videos. Iam assuming you play on Xbox like me so here is what you should try, go to preferences and in game preferences adjust the auto setting for Aim assist in Shooter games. I dont know why your aim assist is that bad but I never have it that bad..

Excellent suggestion Texas!  Why didn't any of us think of that before?  Can you please provide some screenshots or detailed directions of where to do this at?

Hmm, I will have to check the system settings again later on today. I'm not a programmer but I find it strange that you can alter aim assist for every Xbox game through the console settings alone.

It's under profile > game defaults > action

And in there, you can set auto-aim off. Unfortunately, I don't think it works because I've had mine off for a while now and the game zoom-snaps regardess.

Ok, so I checked the console setting and here's what it says:



Game default settings for a game the first time you play it. For a game you're playing or have already played, change your settings in the game.





I think it's pretty clear that this setting is only effective if the given game has the option for aim assist customization, which Mass Effect 2 does not have.
