Do the DEVS get offended by complaints about the game?

I mean, it's their work of art. When someone insults what you put countless hours into completing, it's typical to get very offended. Sometimes, your feelings even get hurt. So when they see a bunch of people saying stuff like "this sucks" , "the game developers were being lazy when they did X", "WoW is way better than this crap", or "I could make a better game than this", does a part of them die on the inside? Or what about the comments made on this board in regards to countless complaints which have already been made about Dragon Age 2?

"This sucks" is a little annoying, simply because it gives us nothing to go on. "I really didn't like X because I was expecting Y, or thought that it needed Q" is very helpful, since it points out action items.

Personal insults, though? Those niggle. Not like we're going to burst into tears, but I will admit to a few eyerolls whenever anyone musters up the urge to refer to us as stupid / out to [verb] [noun] because we hate game play or implies that we're making choices in the look/design of the game out of some urge to punish the PC/Console/Atari 2600 crowd.

Eh. I worked retail throughout university. I'm used to it - and honestly, most of the people on these forums are quite polite and well-reasoned. Things that annoy me a little? As Mike said, personal insults. And I'll also add the 'I hope BioWare fails because they're not making the game I want them to'!

But generally, I've got a pretty thick skin. Having someone curse at you because they dropped their 2000 dollar television and I won't replace it for free gives you a pretty hefty immunity to being insulted.

That sounds like an interesting story.

Oh, I've got four and a half years of selling televisions at a major electronics retailer. The stories abound. Some of them I don't entirely believe, and I was there for them. I've occasionally considered writing a book - between myself and the other people I know who were in a similar situation, I could fill a few hundred pages without issue.

But I digress -  I'm getting off-topic!

True. According to David Gaider, the kittens suffer the worst part of the devs rage.

Not so! It's not us who harm the kittens-- we are just hapless enablers of the carnage.

As for getting offended, meh. We'd have to possess thick skins if we're willing to come here, but some people certainly do seem to use that as an excuse to indulge in @sshattery of epic proportions. That can be annoying, especially when coupled with gross ignorance. Thankfully they're still exceptions. If most people here weren't intelligent and interesting folks to interact with, we wouldn't come here at all.

I get offended by bad science and people using the anonymity and accessibility and lack of accountability of the internet to be a jerkface. And yes, the personal insults get a little, well, personal. If it would be appropriate for me to take a list of names and silly complaints and compile a big "I told you so" letter after the fact to those who were patently wrong, I would, but that would make me the jerkface. :)

Generally, though, i love our community and our fans and gamers in general. it's one reason i'm still here.

Offended? Not really. We know more about the flaws in the game than most fans ever will.

There's been a number of times, though, when I've started a forum post with one of:

- "Oh, honey, no."

- "It's adorable that you feel that way."

- "Listen, son, I don't like your tone."

or

- "Damn, you're right. We really are on a mission to ruin everything forever."

... And then closed the browser window, because whatever followed just wouldn't be helpful, productive, or professional. I figure it's worth sacrificing some sarcastic satisfaction to make the forums a nicer place for everyone!

Who does?

Every time a forumite says something should be simple to do, a kitten gets punted through a plate glass window.

So who's really responsible for that carnage?

I think we all know the answer to that.

And then there's that, forums are always going to be skewed in the favor of dev worship since unless you're a troll once a game disappoints you enough you kind of walk away.

Which is the healthy thing to do, no? Occasionally it does seem to boil down to that guy at the party that feels forced to announce to everyone that he intends to leave because the party, like, totally sucks.

THAT GUY: "So... I'm leaving, everyone!"

EVERYONE: "Okay, bye!"

THAT GUY: "Because this party TOTALLY SUCKS. I don't like it any more!"

EVERYONE: "Well, alright."

THAT GUY: "So now I'm going! I'm totally walking out the door!"

EVERYONE: "Okay."

THAT GUY: "This door! Right here! And I won't be coming back!"

EVERYONE: "Have fun."

THAT GUY: (Long pause) "Why the heck do you want to STAY? This party is totally lame!"

EVERYONE: "I thought you were leaving?"

THAT GUY: "Because the party is LAME!"

EVERYONE: "Well, we're enjoying it. Or we were."

THAT GUY: "Fine! Then I'll go!" (Storms out the door, slams it loudly)

THAT GUY: (Muffled now, from outside) "I totally left! And you all deserve it for being lame!"

(Pause)

THAT GUY: "I'm still outside."

EVERYONE: "So we gathered."

THAT GUY: "You don't deserve my presence!"

EVERYONE: "Evidently not."

THAT GUY: (Storms back in) "Well I'm not giving you the satisfaction! So there!"

THE MESSAGE: DON'T BE THAT GUY.

So you're saying love it or STFU and get out?

Errr... no.

Walking away is sometimes simply the healthy thing to do. If you're not enjoying the party, sitting there and bitterly grousing that everyone who is enjoying the party are a bunch of idiots who're just kissing up to the host is still you not having any fun.

Unless that's your idea of fun. Which would be sad, I guess, but hey-- there ya go. Posted Image

Here's the thing....  some of us have been coming to your parties for years.  It is difficult to find that you are no longer welcomed or wanted at the party anymore.

It has nothing to do with being unwelcome or unwanted. We'd like everyone to have fun at our party... it is a party, after all... but hey, not everybody's going to. At the end of the day you're responsible for your own enjoyment.

But, meh. This is what I get for making a smart-ass analogy. :)

We see it after each game release and after each new game announcement. :) Some are more dramatic than others, but they still fit the pattern.

The problem is,  they're making the games EA wants them to play.  Honestly,  EA buys the studio and suddenly everything's a shooter,  pretty obvious cause & effect there.

And clearly someone from EA went back in time to make Bio design ME1.

Oh come now, AlanC9. You should know that internet furor has nothing to do with the facts!
