Fighter-types have the most difficult task leveling in one respect... ECL. Also, you will be penalized XP with extra party members (eg. henchman, summon, familiar, animal pet). Also, arcane classes get the opportunity for class-specific XP in Ch 1 that other classes don't. Figure about max of level 8-9 for Ch 1 and perhaps another level in the Helm's Hold module.

I don't recall the OC being written with any danger when you sleep, since you barely does it outside of an hotel room, I might be wrong here. But from my memories resting is always safe, until you start playing the comunity modules, the one and only NWN.
We coud talk about the AI here, Artificial Intelligence, or better save it for later. Just for you to know, your opponents are controled by the regular NWN AI which is known to be not the smartest one ever. There is a community AI, see my list in my signature below, which I have been using myself ever since I started playing NWN.
Because I would have quit my now favorite game without it. Using that AI, my answer is yes, you can lure foes into a trap, they will follow you even if they have to open a (locked) door, or jump to a next map sometimes to get your life.
What class do you play in the OC?

You can't sleep when enemies are within the proximity defined by the default AI. Even if you are able to begin sleeping your PC will be "awakened" should a hostile enter the default proximity (in most cases, hostiles are pre-spawned before you enter and are mobile with a perception range). This also occurs even through locked doors if the AI has been scripted that way (proximity many times ignores walls, doors, etc.). The OC uses the default AI but the expansions have customized this behavior a bit.MikeToddWilson wrote...

In Ch 1, there are no respawns that can be farmed for XP. There are a few opportunities in later chapters where you can farm XP but the foes have a very low challenge rating and consequently provide little XP per kill.
Keep in mind as you play the OC, that it is extremely easy and has been balanced to afford an interesting level of challenge at the XP levels for the areas that you encounter. If you just want the vicarious pleasure of godly levels it is so much less boring (IMHO) to just add whatever XP you want using the GiveXP command than by engaging in tedious XP farming.
Baldur's Gate is a much different game.

In ch1 there are two places were you can farmed for XP. At 16XP per encounter it will take a long time to level up

Runbotton estate in the blacklight area. Tell him "Stand up and face me"(16XP)
Begger nest, Warren of the Dammed. You need the anicent key. take the armor from the coffen, kill the mummy. put the armor back into the coffen, kill the mummy. repeat. (6lv fighter gets 72XP each time)

Another way of getting XPs is in the gauntlet arena; if you lose the pendant they give you when you win the combat you get again fighting with Hrusk from the start

As Westan stated you can cheat by killing the mummy in the Warrens of the Damned by picking and putting back the Armor of Comfort which is found in the coffin but as a fighter this will take very much time and you need something against fear (i.e. Daelan's brooch or the Dragon Sleepers), than again the Gauntlet Arena; in the 2nd ch. there are the skeleton summoned by the rune column in the haunted area before Charwood, by intentionally putting the wrong statements two skeletons are summoned that will attack you.
Another endless source of XPs is Luskan, there are 3 places: Arcane Brotherhood tower 3rd floor, don't destroy the altars from which Imps and Quasits spawn, same for Kurth's lair portal (BTW if you attack Kurth before that portal you will find more enemies). The last one is a little bit difficult but carries more XPs: get to the slums in Luskan in the middle of the bridges next to the one wich leads to Baram's lair entrance (not the hidden one), by waiting there you will find coming out a Baram's thug from one bridge and from the other one next to the other leading to the Arcane Tower a Kurth's thug. Every 3 or 4 Baram's thughs (they are worth more XPs than Kurth's) a Kurth's one will wait next by his bridge. By killing a thug another one will get shortly after (they won't pack together).
Now I don't recall other places where enemies swarm in the 1st chapter but I think these could help you (if you have all that patience) ;-)

Why? This isn't an MMO where you grind for XP so you can be high level ASAP.
Just do all the quests, kill all the things you find and you should finish about level 7-8 as intended. Finishing much higher, will take challenge out of pretty much all chapter 2...
Anyone finishing level at level 13 is either lying or cheating massively.
