Collector Assault Rifle: Why is it disregarded?

The Mattock is good, but it feels too much like a semi-auto sniper rifle, which I already have the Viper for.

I quite liked the CAR for its greater accuracy, but the lowish clip sizes and reserve got annoying after a while. I fully intend to switch it out for the Revenant when I get it.
Exactly. This is one of the weirder things about Mass Effect 2 - I don't really understand why one of the most basic weapons in action games (and frankly, in sci-fi) is so under-represented.

Yep. It's fine if you're a soldier that wants to wield a widow, but for anyone else, it's not really distinct from the Viper.
Considering we had a lack of good assault rifles but already had a perfectly effective battle rifle in the game, I don't really understand why they felt we needed another battle rifle.

QFT. I'm playing ME1 now and I miss my spectre weapons, my Heavy X Collosus Armor would be nice too.
Ow, you just had to remind me of the numerous times I started New Game+ in ME1 just to watch my femShep strut through the SR1 in that black-on-red Colossus armour and a backload of black Spectre weaponry ...
Back to the topic, I feel the base accuracy of the CAR is horrid and I'm not the run-n-gun type but rather the bunker-down, pop up and pop off the other guy's head. That's why I prefer high accuracy / DPS like the Vindicator and now the Mattock.
On another side of the coin, I think BW seriously neutered the CAR / Avenger / GPR, considering that the Locust SMG can beat them easily in most departments. I for one feel that they should have set the basic AR's capabilities to be at least on par with if not better than any SMG.

That's the daftest thing about it. I don't think I've played many games where the best assault rifle in the game wasn't an assault rifle.

I can get behind that.

Back to the OP, what difficulty level do you typically play on?

Jaegerbane: I have to agree with you: the Spectre weaponry from the first game looked much better than anything in the second game (save the Widow).

On the surface, yes, I would agree - the Mattock feels like a weaker scopeless Viper
Being an AR and not and SR, the Mattock benefits from increasing damage at close range. While the Viper owns at long range, the Mattock is effective at nearly all ranges - and gets more damaging up close. In the Sucide Mission, I used to have problems fending off Harbinger as he closes in - until I got the Mattock; I just use my squad's powers to eliminate his barriers then it's over in 16 rounds and 3 seconds.
Perhaps this is one of the reason ammo is an issue with the Mattock (and the Vindicator) - being such a powerful all-round weapon, it is hard to resist the temptation to use it for everything that runs into your crosshairs. IMAO, if the Mattock has double the amount of reserve ammo, I honestly don't think I need any other gun. As it is, my non-soldiers use the Locust for routine critters and pull out the Mattock for those troublesome targets that need to die fast.
