Nearly every fight I get into my glass-jaw wizard catches aggro and gets killed by the monsters.
Is there any way/strategy I can use to keep my wizard from grabbing aggro and getting killed?

Have a tank taunt off you.
Mind blast, run.
Freeze them, run.
Paralyze them, run.

Glyph of Repulsion, Mind Blast, Paralyze, Glyph of Paralyzation, Mass Paralysis, Force Field, Crushing Field, take your pick. =)
I imagine you may need to take fewer flashy elemental spells? That is difficult for some people, I know.

In addition, there are many items that "reduce hostility"; I believe the camp merchant sells an amulet that does it.
I'm actually kind of surprised your mage is even drawing any aggro at all; my mage, and morrigan, very very rarely ever get attacked at all.

Sleep -> Horror one of the enemies -> Virulent Walking Bomb on horrified enemy -> Cone of Cold on all enemies closest to mage / around enemy infected with walking bomb -> Blizzard + Death Cloud on entire area. (maybe overkill - this is what I'm doing against crowds on Hard)

If you do research the shapeshifting tree take bear asasp and that kind of helps you defence wise and makes you kind of sort of a tank yourself but not something I would do often. preatty much try to have the tanks attack first and taunt off you and as a hint thing suggests reseach traps (maybe) to hold people off of you.

The same things been happening to me. Both my pc and morrigan seem to always draw a lot of heat in the battles. Walking bomb or virulent walking bomb are good ways to thin out weak enemies esp. towards the end of the game.

My mage draws ridiculous amounts of threat since I can't help but love "flashy elemental spells"
Then Alistair comes in with Threaten and Taunt and saves her butt. Problem (usually) solved.

I grabbed Arcane Warrior as soon as I could for the armor. I dunno, I guess i'm used to my Warmage/Duskmage when I played DnD, but I like being suited up and dishing out fireballs. Makes you less glass-cannony and more walking tower of PEWPEWLAZORS. Or so I've seen. I honestly just play to have fun, and don't plan much out.
Insanity makes everything just a little more enjoyable ;D

I try to keep my mage alive above all else, all my other chars are running auto pilot on good tactics so I can focus on controlling my mage to dish out hell from safe zones.

3 mages with cone of cold and stone fist as well as hexes maxed out = fun on nightmare difficulty. Easiest party to play. Shatter enemies for fun and profit while keeping others frozen most of the time. Just make sure to hex the tougher enemies and then laugh at them. Don't forget mana potions! I have around 100 of health and mana at all times
. Throw in chaining fireballs at higher levels with chain lightning or firestorm or storm of the century and all fights are over soon enough. Throw in some points to con and remember that potions will give you more points as mage type character so cheaper potions are still very effective at higher levels which leaves more money for tomes to buy for gaining extra spells. No need to worry about stunning anyone when cone of cold spell hits three times in a row
.
Blast with fireballs and keep the enemy in the storm too! Wish I had four mages...
Though the rogue works wonders too with advanced archery skills and two weapon fighting skills. I love shattering enemies so much.
