Surprise Surprise!

EA games Australia has bumped up the price of the pc version by $10.00 for the Signature Edition.
The ordinary pre-order price was $78.00 yesterday, and today they have the Signature Edition only for $88.00

Can EA/Bioware doing anything about this, or do we just have to wear being ripped off by retailers? Posted Image

As I keep recommending to everyone, just buy from the EA Store directly to avoid this nonsense from other retailers. That said, the AU EA Store still isn't listing DA 2 but they will, just hang tight. The link is here:

Isn't that site download only though?  I like to have the boxes on my shelf, I'm a bit old fashioned that way.

We get screwed on prices all the time. It's entirely the retailers fault, they charge more because we pay.

I'm not aware if we can go around the retailer and still get a physical copy.

You're assuming the game was ever going to cost $78. Likely just a placeholder price.

I don't think it's the retailers fault either. It's the publishers. Look at Steam, all USD, but if you go there from Australia it bumps up the prices significantly, just for being Australian (I forgive 10% of it, for GST).

EB Games is also one of the worst retailers down here. They always charge RRP and only cut the price if you can prove a competitor is charging less. Other retailers, like JB Hi-Fi are much better about it, as they generally cut prices from the RRP from the beginning. Not sure if they'll be taking pre-orders any time soon though (maybe they already are).

EDIT: If my memory is correct, the Xbox and PS3 prices have dropped $10. To me this implies EB only just got the RRP and it turns out the PC is $10 more than their estimate and the other platforms are $10 less. Maybe that's all BS though, maybe they were $108 and I'm just misremembering.

EDIT 2: Worth noting: $66 USD (US RRP + 10% GST) is only $67. Why are we paying $51 more!? The 'import taxes' 'market conditions' BS excuses can't explain $51!

Australians are always horribly overcharged for games, it's particularly obvious at the moment because the AU$ is almost on parrity with the US.
This piece of gouging is particularly offence because I know I'm being ripped off $10 if I buy the pc version from EB games, then problem is, there are very few other places to buy games from here.

Australians pay more for alot of things. Clothes, shoes, car parts, etc. My aunt brought a set of disc brakes home from the US in her luggage because it saved her $800 over buying it from BMW! The point of that example? If you don't like the prices then shop somewhere else. I pay $50 a year for a mail forwarding service (alot of US shops won't ship international), it pays for itself by the first or second purchase.

Now is certainly the time for Aussies to be buying stuff from the US, take advantage of the exchange rate. I *think* you can get hard copies from the EA store but I am unsure, I would like to have a hard copy of DA 2 and if the EA Store doesn't do that then I'll probably be looking into JB Hi-Fi as they are on the list of retailers participating in the SE promotion (though their website hasn't been updated yet to reflect that).

EDIT: Here's the JB link for DA 2 PC version: http://www.jbhifionl...on-age-2/576502 They won't even allow you to pre-order yet so I reckon they are working on updating the page to show the signature edition (hopefully).

I personally don't like buying stuff from JB as several friends of mine have had trouble returning their unplayable xbox 360 games in the past and JB just refused to refund them.

I personally prefer to use EB games as at least you know you can return it if it's not going to work. But I have a feeling they're going to charge both editions separately because that's what people do.

I agree EB can be a bit of a rip off. But at least you know 100% guarantee that you'll get your pre-order bonus.

Unlike my mates and JB when they pre-order dragon age from there.

Well if you want cheap physical copies, you can go to Big W or JB-Hi-Fi, pretty sure you can pre-order there.

I just bought Fallout New Vegas for $78 at Big W (its NV's launch day today). They take $10 dollars of the usual $88 in the first week.

BTW, if you like Fallout 3, and even if you didn't, you MUST pick up Fallout New Vegas!! It is Amazing, Obsidion finally delivered!

We get ripped off a ridiculous amount over here. Our dollar is pretty much on par to the American dollar at the moment, yet our price for a new game is double the price than in America. Everything here is so ridiculously overpriced.

A good example of how Australians get [insert verb here] is by looking at the price for Fallout New Vegas for Steam and compare it to what American Steam users are paying.

Unwise choice of word there perhaps. But as I monitor game prices on Steam from time to time I do notice extreme fluctuations in certain games, particularly the bigger name releases. BFBC 2 I think it was jumped from 49 to 79 USD on Steam.

But I don't know what sort of pressure Steam/Valve is under to match prices with retailers.

(In AUD now)My local JB was selling SC 2 for $69 on day 1, and FIFA 11 was selling for $89. These prices were well below EB's prices.

In regards to DA 2, I do believe that $78 was their RRP to begin with, and it was never confirmed to be at that price. Mind you $88 is still $11 cheaper than the average AAA release. Of course I believe this $88 will be bumped up to the standard $99 in the fullness of time. The release is still what, 5 months away?

Word?  What word?

Also, the standard edition of DA:O from EB was somethiing like $99 when it was first released, if I'm correct.  I remember paying around $138 for the CE.

Ha yeah, my husband has started buying games from a store called Oz Games or something, lots of great deals there. I'll see if I can find the proper url at some point. I think retailers are starting to have an "oh shyte" moment now that the dollar is at parity. Just in time for Christmas. Let's help the Americans out and import lots of stuff from them :P

Let me help you with that.  All prices are AUD and shipping is inclusive of those prices.

I just don't know if they offer the signature edition, is all...

They're not on the list that Evil Chris put up. Granted, none of the 4 sites on that list have updated their website with SE info yet. I'm not pre-ordering until I know for sure I am getting the SE.

I'm eager in seeing if there'll be other kinds of editions up for grabs.

I ebay everything if it's there which won't be much help with this unless my usual sellers on there end up listing it. I've also bought plenty of games from overseas sellers on there as it just works out cheaper than what most of the big retailers are asking :/ AU retailers should be passing on the benefits of our dollar value atm but they are not and I can't see it happening.

They'll feel the burn when everyone does their shopping overseas. Then they'll be up in arms that nobody wants to buy "Australian-made" products.

Lol, I love those ads.  Home Brand, helping Australians buy better.

Although, Home Brand is actually usually cheaper.  The problem as to why things are so much more expensive in Australia is probably mostly due to monopolization.  A good example of this is the Harvey Norman Holdings corporation.  They own Harvey Norman, Domayne, Joyce Mayne and possibly more franchises.

This basically makes it easier for them to set the prices to whatever they want.  Obviously, there's a limit to how much they can charge for everything, but when there's so little competition...

And more job losses if that happens, it's a pretty bad circle of events. But I'm with a lot of people where it couldn't be all  tax, that is just BS!

My copy of DA:O I bought overseas and it cost me half of what it was retailing for in EB games. I ended up doing the same with Awakening.
