Hi everyone,

I love Mass Effect and I love to work on creatures and aliens designs.
In ME, the Protheans real appearance is still a mystery.
Despite of the ilos statues hint, or the Collectors who are supposed to be repurposed protheans.

So I decided to give it a try !

I'm known locally as somewhat of an artist with pencil and paper myself and must say that you're good! Like female Prothean B best  ;)

I like your drawings ^^ They remind me of Cthulhu, at least the Ilos version.

I don't understand why the collectors are so different from protheans. Protheans, if I remember correctly, have 4 or 5 fingers, a human-like skull and those tentacles on their mouths. Collectors have a huge and large skull, 3 fingers and no tentacles at all, though. That doesn't make any sense.

Nice.

Hm...Cthulu. That's a point. Maybe the Protheans were the Old Gods that Lovecraft mentions in his stories. :P

As for discrepancy of their appearance...the Collectors' genes were extensively overwritten by the Reapers as explained by EDI on the Collector Ship. When you consider only a 2% difference distinguishes humans from monkeys...

That Ilos prothean is now canon in my head. Very well done.

I just had a thought: An empire as vast as the Protheans, there would be areas that are cut off from each other, and a quad strand genetic structure could lead to greater variation... maybe the Illos Protheans are a sub-species that evolved to live on Illos?

What he said.

It is very close to how the Protheans are portrayed both in the statues and in Shepard's visions.

Thanks guys !

@ Domar , thank you kindly sir !

@ LTKerr & OBakaSama  haha you are not the only ones to mention the dread god Cthulhu !
The Mindfalyers from the forgotten realms are also an inspiration source.
(and only God knows how I much I hate them!)
But I don't want to make my prothean "evil" looking.
Well, at least they don't look like some retarded squids...

@DoomMech , Dr Chakwas say :"That's crazy speculation !"
But why not ?

@ Lord_Caledore, Aedan_Cousland , imho the ilos statues are the better picturing of the original Protheans.
However since I like both directions, I will work on yhe 2 versions. I might end up with 2 completely different races.

Protheans A will be more spiritual, wise and advanced.
Protheans B will be more a proud warrior's society. But not without honor.
( I know it's a classic and I love classic)

More to come.
Next will be some color portraits. Head and body.

I know which Colors I will use for the Prothean B, not sure about the Prothean A.
Ofcourse I am open to suggestions !

@ Zairaam: well, LTKerr mentioned it first, and I've been reading Lovecraft again of late, so it's somewhat coincidental. The Hugo Gernsback is also a Lovecraft reference I'm sure because that was the name of an editor of one Lovecraft's works. I'm starting to think that the Reapers are the Old Gods with the Protheans fitting into the whole mythos in some other way. (Lovecraft in space. Hm....) Moving away from the actual point of the thread I know (maybe the Lovecraft thing can be its own thread).

Colour? Well, seeing that the Asari are blue, Drell are yellow, Turians and Salarians are rather earthy looking, I would suggest something to distinguish the Protheans from the current Citadel races. The 'obvious' colour scheme for the Ilos Prothean would be something resembling octopi. Actually, now I can't help but think that the Ilos Prothean, given the actual design, looks somewhat like the Ood from Doctor Who. Maybe that sort of colour?

Just to add something-I always felt that perhaps the Collector General was a 'queen' since it's strongly simplied the protheons were originally an insect race. Or at least, the Collectors are. Looking at collector's architechture is probably not very good. It's going to be better to look at things like the beacons and the ruins from ME1.

Good art there! they look like the statues enough and you reverse-engineered the re-purposing very well.

Great work.  I particularly like the Ilos Prothean.   Really creepy even though they are supposingly benign spacefarers
