Hi fans of Carver,
i have a question and i'm guessing this will be the best place to find an answer.

Right now i'm playing a DA2 game where Carver goes to the Templars. In Act 2, when you talk to Cullen, he mentions how the Templars undergo weekly questioning, and in a discussion with Anders in a non mage playthrough, it is said that anyone found assissting apostates will receive a death sentence. Considering Carver's promise to not turn in a mage hawke, Has he placed himself in danger by choosing to join the templars?

Yup. That's Carver. Tired of being the unneed protector but still helping his family. <3

From the summary of today's chat with Mike Laidlaw regarding Mark of the Assassin:

Companions will flirt with Tallis, and Carver has not lost his "thing for elves."

I am pleased.

This pleases me, too. lol I ship him with my Warden Surana. :o

These letters made me a Carver fan. Peaches was so wrong to send him the first one. Why am I allowed to read Carver mail anyway rofl

If Hawke is male...
Dear Carver,

Thank you for your letter. It's so nice to hear that you're still alive. I'm sorry about Bethany. How is your brother taking it? I hope he's all right. Please give him a hug for me. And a kiss!

Did he find a girl in Kirkwall? Please say he didn't. I think that would break my heart. I always thought he liked me, but I don't know why nothing ever came of it. He looked at me once, that one time at the fair, and I thought I was going to die from happiness. I don't know why you never brought us together. You're a bad friend, Carver.

You're coming back to Ferelden, aren't you? I miss all of you! I think I've filled out just a little more since you left. I think your brother would appreciate it. I look so much better in dresses now and even more amazing out of them.

I'm living with my aunt in Denerim, since Lothering is gone. Write me soon!

Your friend,
Peaches

If Hawke is female...
My darling Carver,

I miss you so much! When are you coming back to Ferelden? The Blight is over and the darkspawn are gone! There's nothing to be afraid of... not that you'd ever be afraid, bravest-man-I've-ever-known!

We're not going back to Lothering. I hear the land is poisoned or something. Father is raising money for a new farm in the Bannorn. I don't know when that'll happen, but he's working very hard. We're living with my aunt in Denerim, so please send your letters there.

Why haven't you been writing, Carver? Did you find another girl in the Free Marches? Remember: no girl will ever do what I did for you behind Barlin's shed that time. You just think about that!

Write me soon! I love you!
Peaches

I only received "female" version of that letter, but lol, "male" one is even better. Especially this part about filling out and dresses. Poor Carver, his brother takes all the attention even when it comes to girl's affection. Well, at least this Peaches didn't fall in love with female Hawke, it's also an achievment since nearly everyone in DA2 turns out to be bi =)

I actually feel sad for Peaches. M!Hawke doesn't care about her and (if f!H) Carver was only using the poor girl. That's not the way to treat a woman. :/

Maybe he wasn't using her. Maybe it was true love  Using someone doesn't fit Carver, because he looks so blundering while dealing with girls. I mean Isabela always making fun of him and his unsuccessful attempts to flirt with Merrill. He doesn't look like some sort of womanizer.

I think it's one of those teenager things, like when a high school couple goes away to separate colleges, and they promise to keep their love strong, but you know they'll be broken up by the end of freshman year. Carver might have had good intentions when Peaches was right in front of him, but after leaving Ferelden, he was looking forward, and not back at what he considered his old life.

I definitely don't think Carver was trying to hurt the girl, but he doesn't seem like the type to want to settle down, marry his first sweetheart, and be a farmer, at least in the first act.

He should still write to say he isn't interested anymore. It's obvious Peaches really cares and is waiting for him.
Again, that's not how you should treat a girl.

I just wish Hawke could be a big sister and say something. Same with the BR. My little brother shouldn't be visiting brothels. :sick:

...especially when we don't have any money! <_<

Haha, it's that last one that gets me. Carver's a big boy, he can do what he likes with who he likes. But dammit stop wasting our sovereigns Carver. The Rose is not bloody cheap! You can get your broom polished all you like once we stop sleeping three to a bed in a tiny shack in Lowtown, alright?

Are you sure Carver is a customer and not a worker? I mean, he said he can't find a job anywhere. I always laugh thinking of Merrin of the Red Iron paying for his services. After all, Carver did say he loved that guy.

Why so sure he didn't? We are not allowed to know what happens to the letter after Hawke so nicely read it without permission ;) Maybe Carver did wright an answer.

In the situation where Peaches is interested in Carver, it's possible that he took an offered opportunity and regretted it later. He might have started out interested, but found out after the fact that she was way, way more interested in him than he was in her, following him around, assaulting him with jealousy if he said two words to another girl, trying too hard to prove her love. I don't blame him for taking her offer in the first place. There aren't a lot of things stronger than the 18 year old male sex drive. He may have begun with good intentions ("Right, let's take it slow and see where it goes"). But he may have changed his mind once he found out how obsessed she was. And let's face it, when somebody is at that stage of an obsessive relationship, the kindest thing you can do for them is ignore them. Because writing back, even with rejection, only encourages renewed pleading. Ignoring her probably spared her a lot of self-humiliation.

Or maybe he just didn't know where she lived until he got the letter.

lol At least he would be old enough. I think 18 is a bit too young to risk getting a "surprise" at the BR. :D

Maybe but that letter makes clear he's ignoring her. The girl doesn't even know he has no plan to go back to Ferelden and that's something he tells Hawke from day one. I mean, it's obvious he would rather stay at Ferelden but he won't leave his family behind. 'We're not putting Mother through that. We came here, we're staying here.'

Heh. Maybe that's the real reason he doesn't want to go back to Ferelden! Image IPB

And just in case it isn't obvious, the genders in my little scenario aren't fixed. Teenage boys are just as capable of being stalkers as teenage girls.Image IPB

I honestly don't think the game writers put much thought into the letter. It was probably just another way to establish that Carver is sexual active as several conversations indicate that Bethany is still a virgin (depending who survives, of course). It helped to show that the DA world is a lot like the "real" one with a sexual double standard for boys and girls. Of course, that doesn't explain how Leandra wasn't upset about the promiscuous Lady Hawke.

While I certainly don't argue the double standard (the DAverse is nowhere near as gender-neutral as the flavor text in the DA:O chargen claims, though DA2 was a surprising step forward), I think part of that is Bethany's magic, too. She has greater reason to fear getting that close to someone than Carver; if a boy shows up under her window to court her in the middle of the night and she just happens to be practicing her Winter's Grasp at the moment, the jig's up and the family's running again.

Plus there's always the possibility of accidental magic use in the heat of the moment. Remember that mage in the Amell/Surana origin who loses control of a fire because his emotions get away from him? Carver doesn't risk accidentally forcecaging his lover in the throes of passion.

I don't ship them - because I don't like Merrill - but this dialogue from MotA is making me change my mind:

Carver: So...how is Merrill? Sad that she couldn't come along.
Isabela: She's fine, all things considered. Why do you- Wait.
Carver: What?
Isabela: You. Merrill. Andraste's granny pants, I can't believe I never saw it before!
Carver: What? No! No no no no. You've got it wrong.
Isabela: Stop fretting. I'm on your side, and I always win.
Carver: She's not a game of cards!
Isabela: Whatever. Good at matchmaking, not to so good at the analogies.

So cute. ^^

Does anyone knows what happens when you bring Merrill?

I think during the "rescue" sequence, Merrill will deflect Carver from flirting with her... though I could be wrong, as I haven't actually brought the two of them together.

I adored that Isabela banter, though.  Carver and Merrill is my secondary Carver ship.  I ship Grey Warden Carver (my favorite version) with a Tabris or Surana Warden, and Templar Carver with Merrill.

I used to hate Carver. Or well, hate is too strong a word perhaps, but there have been an insane number of instances where he made me clench my fists in frustration. I loathed how he always had a sneer ready for my character, no matter if they just rescued him from Grace, handed him over to the Wardens so he at least had a chance of surviving, or finally ran into him again after years of not seeing him.

I even gave a few rants on the BSN, expressing exactly what I thought of him.

But a while ago, I started another mage playthrough. I don't know why, but suddenly all my dislike for him had melted away. Where I used to growl at his insensitivity, I now chuckled and shook my head. I went from wanting to kick his ass, to wanting to pinch his cheeks, all in a matter of weeks.
Perhaps it's the realization of how Lukas Kristjanson has perfectly captured the older sibling/younger brother relationship; I've got two younger brothers, and the thought of the similarities between our and Hawke and Carver's relationship is enough to make me grin.

This... epiphany, if you like, has very slowly and subtly made Carver grow into one of my absolute favourite characters. Considering how Aveline is another one of those, I can honestly say I am thoroughly impressed by Kristjanson's writing.

...But I still would have liked the option to hit Carver on the back of the head every once in a while.
