Who the hell names their kid CARVER? Why not name him SLICER or BUTCHER or CHOPS PEOPLE TO ITTY BITTY BITS while you're at it?

But that just goes to my point: Carver is a surname, not a first name.

Nobody starts out with a scary moniker. They have to be earned, preferably with a high body count.

Ah, no. It is derived from a surname. Behind the name only lists person names.

I dispute the argument over his name, else we would have to have a nice discussion with Eamon and Isolde about naming their son Connor. What, did they want to have a deceptive charlatan for a son? :-p

Connor is a common first name, though. And nobody calls con artists "conners."

Now, Carver? Never met one in my life.

I think Carvers a pretty cool name.

The last name Hawke however is still ridiculous.

We can't very well decry the value of a first name solely because you have never met someone with that name. Personally, I like it.

I've seen Carver as a first name in medieval-fantasy setting games before. It's not much different than naming someone Dirk, which is a totally awesome name. Lots of names that come from old English can be used as first or last names.

We had a guest speaker at my University once and he was named Carver (first name). He was from England.

It will be really fun to see how the sibling relationship develops over time, how it's going to present itself in the game. Otherwise Carver could just have been a young warrior that you meet in your travels. Wonder if there will be flashbacks to when you were young and such things.

I could see myself being a bit overprotective of the one younger sibling I got left. My poor fem Hawke feeling guilty of not being able to protect her sister and then shielding Carver a bit too much. Don't know if you'll ever have an argument concerning that. Jupp, It'll be fun to see how it plays out.

Much like the real Carver Hawke, it isn't clear if this thread is going to make it too far past its first appearance.

With the rumors of companion on companion romances, I decree that Carver will be a perfect match for Isabela.

Evidence: Clothing
  • Carver has no sleeves.
  • Isabela has no pant legs.
Result:  One is naked, one is clothed.  Everyone wins.
Verdict:  PERFECT MATCH.

Evidence 2: Mendelian Genetics
  • Isabela is quick witted, lithe and deft.
  • Carver is stocky, inexorable, and kind of lumpy.
Result:  Well balanced children perfect for DA3's "traits of all 5s" characters.
Verdict:  PERFECT MATCH.

You do realize these Cabela children would have chins the size of darkspawn ogres, right?  Though it would be interesting if companions could romance each other. How many players would let their little brother go out with a party hardying pirate like Isabela though, who knows.

Hey, Connor is my grandfather's name, my great grandfather's name, and his father before that... It's Irish. Leave it alone!! :crying:

I know; I was making the point that if people can malign one name (like Carver), they'd have to do the same thing for other names (like Connor).

Carver just looks like someone you expect to see die after five minutes from meeting.

Somewhere in the world, Ethan Hawke is crying.

I myself don't find Carver an odd name only because I've heard of it before (or met a person ... saw a show. blah blah).

*and my mind is wandering....*
The name Carver makes me think of Carl, which in turn makes me think of Kolchak ...
So Carver = Kolchak? *sigh* I wish (but there can only be one!). Then again, they both dress goofy, so there's a similarity.

Carver seems like a perfectly decent name to me. I wasn't even thinking of it as 'somebody who carves'. Like Cooper or Taylor or Miller. Objectively I know what it means, I just... don't think about it.

Unless they gave it up to become Lead Designers. I rather miss my farmer's tan.

I will offer this, though, Carver's no farmer. Those muscles are from training.

In reality, he was found by Mama and Papa Hawke. Sent from the planet Krypton by Jor-El, Carver Hawke is here to save Earth, though he took a pit stop on Thedas.

It can also be a factor in Carver's death at the beginning.

I
can see the scenario where the party is confronted by the Ogre and
Carver rushes forward to defend his sisters and mother ( despite their
protests and warnings ).

[smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/crying.png[/smilie] Hush. 'Tis not so.

I like the name Carver. I named my eldest son Marius, so I'm not about to knock anyone else, imaginary or otherwise, for their name. I feel I no longer have that right. ^_^
