Rivalry doesn't mean he'll stab you in the back.

And I'm sure the "Oh you're just such an adorable little brother!" attitude is EXACTLY why he's more likely to develop as a rival. xD How many younger brothers wouldn't object to someone going all pinchy-cheek, hair-ruffly "Amagawd who's the cutest little brother?" on them? xD

As for pinching cheeks - what sane person would do this to anyone above 3? I hated it as a kid, and can't imagine doing it to anyone. As for "adorable little brother" I meant deep understanding of each other between siblings, caring for each other, watching each other backs. "The whole world may be against you, but I'm with you", that sort of thing.

Sibling rivalry is fine, and often inevitable with teen siblings. But we aren't playing teen characters, so I would like to have at least an option to develop friendship with Carver.

Well, there are going to be male players playing DA2. It seemed like Alistair was written expressly with female players in mind, but you know; there's nothing wrong with that.

It seems that Carver just has a more defiant personality, and that manifests in a tendency to develop a rivalry with people of higher authority, in this case his older sibling, be it a sister or otherwise. Meaning his rivalry doesn't have to be based on the admittedly more common brotherly standpoint, but rather the fact that Hawke is simply older than him and --judging from the basis of the game-- Hawke will be getting by far the vast majority of attention and recognition.

Thanks... Unfortunately, impressive as my Google-Fu may be, Carver/Isabela fanfiction is scarce, and the fanart be non-existent! (Unless you count Aimo's lovely illustration, Manly Man Show, in which Isabela implies that she'll "teach [Carver] to be a man... in a more FUN way.") But if you have a LiveJournal, I found that the Dragon Age "Kink Meme" has a DA2 section with one Carver/Isabela fanfic. It's nondescript, but kind of cute.

There will be a surge of DA2 fanfiction and fanart after March 8th, I'm sure. Maybe some Carver/Isabela stuff will be included? I mean, fangirls will ship anything (including myself, obviously) so... I've totally got my hopes up for the Carver/Isabela pairing.

 I look forward to Carver's  relationship to me being one of rivalry.  I suspect I will be a Female Mage on my first playthrough, mostly because I want to have the same moves with my staff as Monkey, from Monkey Magic! (www.youtube.com/watch) 
(I can't rock those sideburns though--not just because I'm a woman--it is that only Masaaki Sakai can rock those right.) 

I hope that throughout the game, him and I will be butting heads constantly, but somehow near the end we'll pull together and save Kirkwall. For some reason, as I think of that, I keep thinking of the end of LA Confidential....

I'd say that's a pretty good haul, especially with the game not even being out yet!  Oh, k-meme. You're so scary and wonderful.

On another note, I thought I read somewhere that over the course of the game, NPC party members could romance each other (for lack of a better word) or siblings could potentially be your rivals when it comes to love interests? Or something like that. I'm not getting my hopes up or anything, since I can't remember where/when I saw this. That ringing a bell for anyone else though?

I hope there's ways to turn Carver off of the rivalry path. I don't really like sibling rivalrys that much.

There will most likely be a way. But the new Approval meme spawned from DA2 will probably be something like "Carver Rivalry +10".

I'd much rather pair up Carver with Merrill than Isabela.  Carver's such a big guy (DEM BICEPS) and Merrill is such an adorable little pixie... it would be a really sweet pairing.

As for rivalry, I really hope Carver isn't just a **** who tries to stab Hawke in the back.  I also doubt that will be the case.  There are a lot of neat ways they can play out a sibling rivalry.  After all, it would make sense that Carver may be jealous of his older brother/sister, since Carver's very presence in the party means he was the only non-mage out of the 3 siblings in a strongly magical family.  That might breed some feelings of inferiority, yes?

Okay, scratch what I said above. Maybe we can gain Carver's "Friendship" by helping find a girlfriend. I don't care who it is--I just want this to happen.

Oh man, I'm honestly afraid of that development. For some reason, I'm really afraid that Carver will join up with the Templars...

And I'll be all, "Carver, nooooooo....! You're my little brother and I love you!"

And he'll be all, "But the Templars offer some really great benefits! All the lyrium you can eat!"

......and then I'll have myself a good cry.
