Not that I know what the new skill tree looks like or anything.

I like him tho. Probably moreso than Bethany. Of course, that just might be because I prefer playing as a mage, so lil' sis is probably not gonna be in any of my playthroughs.

He was a bit of a weak link in the demo. Not enough defense and I don't think he had an aggro dump. I played twice as a mage and both times fighting the Ogre I had to micro some element of Carver to keep him alive (usually by making him run away). Second time even that couldn't save him.
Did you set Carver on the Ogre? I just used him to keep the adds off my Hawke while Aveline kept the Ogre busy. Though on my most recent demo playthrough as a Mage both Carver and Bethany died on the first wave of Darkspawn. I was all "Awesome job you two. No, never mind, I'll handle them!"
Bethany should have learned Mindblast from her older sibling, and Carver needs better armor.
Giving Carver more cunning instead of Strength could help him survive, since cunning is apparently the stat that adds defense.

Well, if he's a tank and his build's anything like Alistair's, you really need to up his shield skills and his strength first.

When you first meet Aveline and Wesley, you have a chance to affect your siblings' Friendship/Rivalry meter. Has anyone found a way to actually increase Carver's Friendship with this conversation? I've played through this part 3 times, trying to pick out different responses. In two instances I'd get +5 Rivalry for Carver. The best I could do was in one instance where there was no change for Carver (but Bethany got like a +15 Friendship). And that was when I chose the "mean/jerkish" response. Just curious, cuz I'd like to try to win over Carver's friendship in the real game as soon as possible.

Anyway. I wonder why Carver's the one with the bad rep?

There might be derp in there, but it's definitely not Carver.

I got friendship points with Carver for picking the 'He's gentle for a mage-hunter' option.

Carver gets a +5 friendship when you're a warrior/rogue I noticed and if you picked the middle option when you talked to Weasle (yes).
Huh, I got the +5 friendship for my mage when I picked the middle option. Hmm...
Ah, then it must be as Tamyn said then. Only if you choose to investigate further Carver disagrees (so no approval!).

He's not your classical tank, and he won't have Aveline's defenses, but he's more capable offensively and will generate more threat. He'll also have access to tanking talents, most of which won't (or none will) require the Warrior to carry a shield.

Wait, so which sibling dies is dependent on what class you are playing? That seems stupid.
It's for plot reasons. Many people believe it's because the party needs to have at least one Hawke apostate mage (either Bethany or yourself) in order for the story to work.

And one of the siblings to have been at Ostagar, apparently.

I decided my Male Hawke mage will definately be a rival to Carver ... no way I can help being a jerky big brother to him
Rivalry path =/= Jerk
Friendship path =/= Doting older brother
Jennifer Brandes Hepler wrote...
As a general rule, the way friendship and rivalry works, is that friendship means agreeing with and supporting the follower in what *they* want to do, no matter how crazy, illogical or dangerous to self and others. Rivalry means opposing their big cause, often for the right reasons. So it's very possible to be a better friend to someone by choosing the rivalry path, since you're trying to stop them from giving in to their own self-destructive whims.
It's not always the most intuitive, but definitely don't think of friendship as doing the "right" thing and rivalry as doing the "bad" thing. It's just as likely to be the other way around.
