BAD BAD move BioWare, if the game is about choices then I the player should have the right to pick if my bro or sis is killed.

I definitely understand where you're coming from, but for me, story trumps having this one choice. If the overall plot becomes far more interesting because of this setup, I would much rather that it went the way BioWare has already intended for it to roll. This is of course, assuming that the setup actually does result in a better story.

Well, if he's a tank and his build's anything like Alistair's, you really need to up his shield skills and his strength first.

Not that I know what the new skill tree looks like or anything.

It looks like to make Carver a tank, we'll have to pump Strength and Cunning instead of Strength and Dexterity, which is how I always made my tanks in Origins.

So was it just me or did MamaHawke seem more upset about bethany dying than carver? It don't think it was intentional but she just seemed more into the bethany death scene.

So from what I hear I can't be a mage & keep my sister in my party thats BS. from what I seen from this game so far is that your party is mostly warriors or rogues & the fact that I really wanna play a mage & have a defense mage & an attack mage. & you tell my I gota have the brother if i'm a mage thats crap & I think caver sucks. & then the fact no matter if your a warrior or rogue hawk you still cant pick if you want to role with your bro or sis. BAD BAD move BioWare, if the game is about choices then I the player should have the right to pick if my bro or sis is killed.

If that's your biggest concern, then I don't think you need to be worried. Your party will still have Anders and Merril. If you play a mage, then there will be three mages in your party. You will still be able to build a mage for defense and one for attack. If it's just that you want to play a mage and Bethany is your favorite sibling, then yeah, it's not
possible. But if you really enjoy playing mages I don't understand why you'd let that spoil it for you. There was a dev quote a while back that said we would eventually see why the story requires a sibling's death based on class, and if the story is good and it requires this choice be taken away from us to work, then I can happily live with it.

As for Carver tanking, I also seem to remember a dev post where one of them built him to do it on normal but wasn't sure about the efficiency of it on higher difficulties (I'll see if I can find it again). Which won't be a problem for me, because I doubt I'll play on anything harder than normal. That and I kind of like the idea of making him a damage dealer, but that could leave me without a tank on my first run-through. I'm a casual gamer so I miiiight need one. I did in Origins. Conundrum!

Edit: Found it.

Mary Kirby wrote...

I've done this, in fact. I don't know if it's a great idea on nightmare, but Carver and Fenris can be built to tank on normal.

From here. And I'm almost positive I'll never play on nightmare, so this doesn't bother me. :P

Both seemed lackluster. I did like how MamaHawke's "I don't want a hero I want a son" line was delivered. But on the "I will never forget you" part, Bethany's did seem to have more of a punch. For me it about breaks even. Lacklusterly.

I agree completely.

I was sad when Beth died, yes. Though, not because the scene was well done but because a character died whom I could have grown to like given the time.

I still would wanna have an all mage party for once but oh well. I'll still play a mage & i'll just be an ass whole to caver. this way it will make the sisters death cavers fault in my mage hawks eyes. & when beth died I fealt sad & how the mom responded to the death was emotional. I have a sister in real life so thats why I really don't wanna have hawks sister die. cus since i'm hawk in the game i'd just rather have beth over caver but I can always play the warrior too if I wanna have beth. just like mages for this game & they play very well com paired to the other 2 classes but its only a demo so who can say what skill become unlock for the classes to make a good judgment. but that's my rant on the sibling think. wonder if battle blood mages will rock in DA2 cus in origins mages were crap.

I feel like I'm noticing a shift in opinion about Carver on these forums now that many have played the demo. He seems to be more well-liked than Bethany. I approve.

I also like the shift in attitude towards him. I think he's finally getting some well deserved cudos. ^_^

Yes. It hink there's a little jealousy there. At least, that's what I got from the codex entry. ^_^

Rivalry path =/= Hateful jerk
Friendship path =/= Doting, younger brother

Jennifer Brandes Hepler wrote...

As a general rule, the way friendship and rivalry works, is that friendship means agreeing with and supporting the follower in what *they* want to do, no matter how crazy, illogical or dangerous to self and others. Rivalry means opposing their big cause, often for the right reasons. So it's very possible to be a better friend to someone by choosing the rivalry path, since you're trying to stop them from giving in to their own self-destructive whims.

It's not always the most intuitive, but definitely don't think of friendship as doing the "right" thing and rivalry as doing the "bad" thing. It's just as likely to be the other way around.

We'll see what his general attitude towards his older sibling is in the game. For now, we only have tiny dialogue snippets and a hint of how he may have felt growing up with two mage siblings in his codex entry from the demo.

Ok. So I played the demo again last night but as an archer. (I had to check it out! Sorry Carver!)

When we met with Wesley and Aveline, I investigated but only used the lower option, which asks them how they avoided the horde. Then I used the nice reply and still got +5 friendship from Carver. I remember reading on here that you could get a +5 if using the sarcastic tone, but I just wanted to let everyone know that you don't have to use sarcasm only to score some points with Carver.

I think as long as you don't turn the conversation hostile, you'll score some friendship points.

Interesting - thank you, Saber!

We'll see how those different paths will work. I do think, however, that BioWare maybe should have named them differently. "Rival" always seems to be associated with negative feelings and "friendship" with positive feelings even though, as Hepler stated, it might be better for certain characters to choose the rivalry path with them.

Totally. I laugh every time I see you post Jennifer's response to help people get the idea that Rival is not the evil path; it just means they might not agree with you, but still respect you. It's funny to me that people can't seem to understand that.
Honestly, I just plan on playing a certain type of Hawke. Whether or not my party approves of my choices is not my concern. I mean, yes, it would be cool if Carver agreed with me, but it might be cooler story-wise for there to be tension.

This is how I'll play my mage as well. I think it was also stated that the companions will respect Hawke more if s/he sticks to his/her beliefs instead of bending over backwards to please them.

This is also why I'm going to use my contrary FemShep's personality rather than the other, nicer FemShep or Warden I have.
