There are a few ways, Karan.

Keep in mind to:

-decline working with the smugglers/mercenaries from the prologue
-chose to let the mages in most quests go to the Circle
-treat the templars with respect
-ask for his opinions and support him
-do his personal quest ("Tobrius's documents")
-taking the diplomatic dialogue option earns you friendship points
-take him along for the Deep Roads expedition (friendly warning: bring Anders along if you do)

You mean you can decline working with the smugglers/mercenaries from the prologue and still get into the city? How?

Playing a mage for my 2nd playthrough and ... I like Carver. I just wish there was a way you could keep both Bethany and Carver.

We were moved! Whoop!

I was so happy in Act 2 and 3 when Carver showed up. There was a narrative issue in act 3 that was weird because of the order I did my quests in, but I loved it still.

I saved Carver from a hostage situation, then did the Deep Roads quest. In the Deep Roads Carver was all "it's been years" when I'd seriously just saved him 5 minutes ago. I guess I needed to do those in a different order.

His appearance during the whole mage/templar thing in Kirkwall was awesome too, kind of Meredith-like in the way his intro was handled. Loved it. Loved that he stood by my Hawke even when Hawke sided with the Mages.

Ha! I guess you still didn't repent for the lack of art. Get to it, woman. :P

No, no. In Act I you'll get a letter either from the smuggler or the mercenary leader asking you to see them. You can go and see them but must decline their offer for work. This will give a +5 friendship.

Did you do the Grey Warden ending?

It's also very, very moving. Even more so than the Templar ending, in my opnion. Even though I guess with Carver's namesake being a templar, him becoming one would also be nice.

Yep, I did the Grey Warden ending. I don't think Carver shows up during the Nathaniel quest if you don't.

Right now I'm doing my second playthrough as a Mage, and I plan to leave Carver behind this time so he becomes a Templar. I'm really looking forward to the Hawke brothers reuniting after Carver joins the Order, since it theoretically puts him in such direct opposition of his apostate brother.

I did both endings and I love them both equally for different reasons.

Lukas really did an outstanding job with Carver.

Have you approached the quest where you give him the letters in different ways? I did it as snarky Hawke on my first run, and Carver actually got a bit... nasty with Hawke concerning Bethany. When I approached it as a good/diplomatic Hawke, it was a more touching scene. Not that the harsher response from Carver was inferior in any way.

Still need to try the aggressive options.

My Hawke was usually snarky but diplomatic where Carver was concerned so I tried those options first.
The first aggressive option is something along the lines of "Don't give me that look." if I remember correctly but I didn't take the second snarky/aggressive option because they seemed, well, too jerkish for me.

Don't feel bad about being a jerk to Carver, Chig. He's a jerk to you if you consistently use the snarky/humerous options in that scene. :P It basically comes down to  "YOU'RE THE REASON BETHANY DIED, BROTHER". Jerk!

I can't bring myself to be mean to him. I did it once and reloaded; I'm weak and soft-hearted.

I did use some of the snarky options with him at the final Gallows scene, though:
Hawke: "Don't make me tear up in front of the others, you jackass!"
Carver: "Aveline said to rub your collar with onions."

Ending, of course, with Aveline pretending that she knows nothing about this little plot of theirs.

YAY! We got moved!

I'm not willing to play anything but a mage yet. I'd miss my obnoxious little brother too much.

You're not alone, Sia.

I started my second playthrough with every intention to make my MaleHawke a rogue. I couldn't do it. Maybe some day in the far, far future I'll give Beth a chance, too.

Bethany is a sweetheart, but she really doesn't have a hook, other than being the ONLY uncorruptable mage in the entirety of Kirkwall.  Even when Carver was being an ass to Hawke, I really enjoyed the arc of their relationship, and I cheered at the end when he rejoined us.

Carver actually kind of reminds me of my own younger brother, whom I've had ups and downs with.  Even when I can't stand him, I love him to pieces.

I only have younger brothers-in-law, but I've been their big sister their entire lives (they're lots younger than my husband). I played my Hawke as constantly trying to improve her relationship with him, only to be rebuffed constantly.

It was wonderful. Good thing I have to replay Margaret (I screwed up with Isabella) at least once more and then play as a mage again to romance Fenris.

Wow...70+page thread. I didn't think anyone could like Carver. One of the most unlikeable characters I've ever seen. He's so whiny but to each there own I guess. :)

Oooh, "whiny" - my favourite word in the entire universe.

This perfectly sums up the relationship, I believe. That's why I think his character arc is one of the best in the game. He goes a long way and grows as a character and a person whether it is within the Templar or Grey Warden arc.

The three of us must adore whiny characters, Chig, Teen.  *rolleyes*

We're also members of the Kaidan Alenko Appreciation Society.  Bromancers are welcome, too. :)

Someone who gets accused of being whiny by his detractors for as little reason as this.

I think most people who hate Carver just fails or simply do not bother to look past his behavior and examine why he acts like he does. A pitty really.

Both siblings characters are awesome and well-made in my opinion.

LOL. Oh, gore-ious.

I'd describe Carver's re-entry into the story during the final battle (where he rips up a Shade) as a gore-ious entry.

Question for the other Carver appreciators: am I the only one who wanted to Renegade-interrupt Aveline when she called Hawke's baby brother  "a bit of a ******"? It's bad enough that she ****-blocked him from having a sense of self-worth and a purpose in Act 1 by keeping him from joining the City Guard...
