well, I don't know if all that was posted in seriousness or jest.
but, when you say something like:
"Maybe your Hawkette is a warrior. Okay, that's fair. But how good a warrior is she? I'm betting at the time they flee Lothering, she's level 1. So come on... Probably a level of skill or so below Carver."
That's implying that Lady Hawke, if she's a warrior, will be less skilled than Carver. Why? Because she's a woman??
Never mind the fact that Lady Hawke is the eldest sibling.
Who's to say she isn't a better warrior than Carver, and maybe someone Carver looks up to and idolizes........
Uh... I think you... may have read into that a wee bit much.
I think the message would have been the same if the Hawke in question was a male. The joke was made at Hawke's level when leaving Lothering... that's all.
And come on, people need to cut it out with the whole she can be as good as the boys, because she's a woman! or something... kind of attitude. Any jab made at the lead character's gender is all in good fun, because really, the only difference between any Bioware lead character is boobs and a love interest. And hate to say it, but little brothers generally don't idolize their big sister if said big sister is more athletically capable then they are. Ask my little brother.
Either way, it was jesting. And if he had said instead "Well, Carver is a man. So he's better than Hawkette. Because she's a woman."... well, then even if it was in good humor, the joke would fall flat.
Preach it sistah! I was having a similar debate with my husband (well not so much a debate as we were agreeing) last night that women and men just fill different roles in society and that's that. It doesn't make anyone inferior to the other. His question was "What do women want?" and my response was " We don't know!" Anyway, slightly off-topic-ish. But yeah, I do get tired of people *looking* for sexism. I think Bioware has always been pretty fair, even bending the rules of realism, to give us female warriors and the like in their games. Sure, you get the occasional "Wow I didn't know there were female Grey Wardens" comment (and after the Broodmother, that is pretty fair) but otherwise.. it's smooth sailing for us ladies.
Anyyyywho, I'm glad to see some more positive Carver-loving. I hope he turns out to be quite surprising and doesn't die a Mhairi-esque death early on.
