Am I wrong to conclude that most Carver fans are female players? It seems that way. But as a male gamer, Carver is by far my favorite companion. Basically because his character is so flushed out. Too often RPG games like this have player character siblings being your best friends (DA:O Human noble being an example). Carver brings to life sibling rivalry at its finest. He cares for you but is too proud to admit it. He's protective of you as the warrior but always feels shadowed (with good reason) by your accomplishments. Best companion in a RPG I've seen in a long time.
I wouldn't be surprised if Carver had more female fans than malebecause he's pretty cute.
Seriously, though, I agree with your assessment. I love Carver so much. Just wish we had more time with him.
I love Carver because of the rivalry between he and Hawke. Carver questions Hawke every move, and I actually feel sorry for the guy. Here he is the only normal kid out of the three (because if you have Carver than Hawke is a mage) and his parents main concern was to keep Hawke and Bethany away from the Templars. He definitely has a strong personality, much stronger than Bethany's.
I wonder if Hawke was a warrior and had Carver survived would they be more buddies sharing in constant effort to protect Bethany?
I would like Carver to be a permanent companion in DAIII.

It's hard to say. On one hand, he might be a bit more mellow towards Hawke because the both shared the experince of having the potential to be great, but having to hide it to protect the mages in the family.
On the other... the "Death by Ogre" codex implies that Hawke is much more focused than Carver... with a Mage for an older sibling, he could at least make himself belive that Hawke gets all the attention and complments because of that... but Hawke as a Warrior or Rogue means that there is no illusion to hide behind; Carver being ignored is because Hawke is a better fighter than him (at least, in his mind), and that might have made him even more antagonistic.
And I also agree that there should be something that lets us hang around with the "other" Hawke on a more permanent basis, even if it's just DLC or an xpac.

Ah, I see. I would like to think that sharing the betrayal at Ostagar would have strenghtened a bond between them.
Me and my own little brother butt heads similar to what we see with Carver and Hawke (except I don't have templars after me), probably why Carver is so endearing to me. I'm going to call him bubby from now on!

So in the deeproads expedition, right at the very beginning of sandal's 'not enchantment' cutscene I noticed that your sibling, should they be with you, is standing a little back and holding their head. I was wondering if this was supposed to be when they first got infected with the taint?
I have wondered this myself.

Thank you. I went back and did some quests over again. Before the deep roads, it looks like I'm 25-30 points short of 100 friendship. How much of a boost do you get making him a grey warden? I'm so close, and I don't want to restart again
I don't mind being his rival, but I wanted to do one playthrough of him on full friendship. I keep seeing Gamlen and I would hate for Carver to turn into something so bitter and alone.

You should get 15 points for taking him along and another 5 for promising to find Stroud. I think it's important to know that you don't necessarily need a full friendship for Carver's dialogue to change when you meet up with him again in the Deep Roads during Nathaniel's quest.
I know what you mean - after Varric's comment that was the first thing that went through my mind. I think Sarah1281 wrote a story inspired by this very banter between the two.

Carver had brown eyes in my first Manhawke playthrough, I think it might change based on your Hawke's eyes? Bethany's seem to change at random all the freaking time for me too.
Hmm. I had a blonde haired mage with kinda weird-colored eyes. They were somewhere in the middle of the slider, and I guess they could be called hazel, since they seemed to vary from amber-brown to greenish, and Carver's eyes were still blue.
I'll have to go play around with this. Does the Black Emporium change the sibling's appearance, too? That'd be the easiest way to experiment.

It's a nice idea to show someone getting infected for once but why just your sibling and no one else? I mean, obviously Anders is immune but for the rest of the party? Isabela barely wears anything as it is and as a mage why would Bethany get darkspawn blood on her? Do the Hawke siblings just randomly lick the walls or something?
::snerk:: Apparently so.
Carver: I-- I think I've been tainted. Just like that templar Wesley.
Varric: Well, that's your own stupid fault for trying to eat that hurlock after we killed it.
Carver: I was hungry!
Hawke: We all warned you to leave it alone.
Varric: I hope it was tasty at least.
Carver: ::mumbling stubbornly:: It was worth it.

LOL, I was wondering about that. You can take along any other ranged or melee character and they're fine. Fenris, Isabela and Aveline are just as much in the Darkspawn's face as Carver, and most of them would logically be more likely to get tainted than Bethany, who never even gets close to the Darkspawn.
I guess Isabela isn't affected by the taint because she's built up an immunity to it after experimenting with so many different taints over the years...

I miss Snarky Hawke. Anna's not so much snarky as tough. *sigh* But then, she's all starry eyed over Fenris, so I guess it fits.
Right now, I'm running around with Carver and Fenris as my tanks. I have to say, Anna and Varric? Not really working that hard.

I looooove Warden!Carver. After playing them both, I prefer the Warden path to the Templar path for him.
I would still really like to write a fic where Warden!Carver meets FemTabris, but I cannot think of any kind of plot besides fluffy Mary Sue-filled Carver love. XD

Made a fella yesterday with black hair and dark green eyes, Carver was rockin' the brown eyes. Unfortunately, adding in darker skin got me Bethany's Worst Haircut Ever, which annoyed me to no end. Carver just had silly hair, Bethany's was just ... terrible. Bowl cut for the lose.

I know - after playing both paths I do, too. Carver needs a strong sense of accomplishment and, as Cullen points out, the Templars aren't the right choice for someone like that.
I get the impression that Carver is very unhappy and feels that he doesn't fit in with the Templars quite as much as he thought he would. He's too proud to admit it to Hawke and maybe even to himself because something was finally his own choice and therefore, in his opinion, it must have been the right one.
It's a bit ironic. If he joins the Order, his letter to Hawke is happy and he sounds genuinely glad that he's finally taken his life in his own hands. But the more time passes, the more resentful and bitter he grows.
If he's made a Grey Warden, his letter to Hawke is very curt and angry but by the end of the game he's at peace with himself and his brother/sister.
What I also liked about Warden!Carver is when he calls you out on siding with Meredith. That was very unexpected the first time. Oh, and Varric's "Here we go again ..." was priceless.
