I'm having a bit of a problem with multiple installs of BG2.  I have one installed that's meant for me playing single player with mods and whatnot, and another that's a clean install meant for multiplayer games, but whenever I run the baldur.exe file in my multiplayer installation directory, it runs the single player version!

Anyone know how to fix this?

I'm not sure that BG2 supports multiple different installs on the same machine or whether it's possible with tweaking. The problem is the registry which points specifically to one install, likely.

I vaguely recall that there was a way to manage this, but I don't remember specifics nor can I locate any mention of it. Perhaps someone else may come along who has recent experience setting this up. I would have thought there'd be a way to dynamically turn mods on and off so that you don't have to have multiple installs, but perhaps not.

The registry could be a source of problems

*without having tried it*, it may be worth trying it with a registry sandbox program, as (at least in theory) it should lift this constraint.

Rest assured, BG2 does support multiple installs on the same machine. It isn't even that difficult to set up, thankfully. (And there's no need to go messing with the registry.)

Take a look at this tutorial. You can also use the Multi-Install Tool to automate the process of cloning installs. (Although you'll still need to edit the [Alias] section of 'baldur.ini' in the newly created install folder.)

Cool! Thanks for the info, igneous.sponge.

Note that you may not have to mess with the registry, but that's because the steps just tell the user to not use the usual methods of starting the game. In other words, you're avoiding the things that the registry would care about. All good, though.

Wow, quite cool, especially for people that want two installations, one vanilla and one moded. Would be great if this info could be incorporated into the stickies, I'm sure many people will still be interested to know when this thread has gone many forum pages back.

Indeed, good suggestion to add it to the stickies. I've tossed it into the BG2 FAQ one! Thanks!

It's very easily fixed: don't run baldur.exe, but the bgmain.exe inside the directory of the install you want to play. Also you should edit the baldur.ini file by opening it with a notepad, and changing the directory path right on top inside the file saying something like "HD0:=C:\\\\Program Files\\\\Black Isle\\\\Baldurs Gate II"  to point to the right directory of the install you want to run - and save, before starting your campaign. In my experience, it isn't even necessary to have the other 5 linex (CD1-5) pointing to the right install, as the content of the discs would still be the same.

Thanks guys. I actually did figure out that I could just run the BGmain.exe file and have it start with the proper install (after having changed the .ini file to the right file destination), but the multiple install tool is pretty nifty as well.
