Theres a lawsuit right there for plagarism right? thats DA:2 or what?

I'm sure there have been abstract representations of dragons in the past and will continue to be abstract representations of dragons in the future. Thematic similarity is not copyright infringment.

There's no law against making products in the same genre/category as yours.

...snip... Keeping in mind that as of now DA2 is still a directx 9 game until the devs let us know other wise (and I would imagine it'll stay a DX9 game due to console limitations) I highly doubt the graphics are going to look all that drastically different.

Don't even get me started on the new look of the Skelito.. er darkspawn. I think they're absolutely terrible looking, more comical than scary. Though their new look does some what seem to fit the "anime flavored" direction they seem to be going for.

I believe I read somewhere on this forum a dev saying that they'll be using DX11, but I can't remember where.  It stuck in my mind because I'd just bought a new DX11 graphics card.

As for the OP, I must confess that I tend to agree with his opinions, it does look far to much like a JRPG for my tastes.  However, I'm reserving judgement until I see some official game play released.  I just hope it happens before January 11th. Posted Image

Laidlaw had mentioned that nothing was decided yet at one point. I remember that post too as I too just did some major upgrading but I highly doubt its going to happen.

Eh when you take into account Eclipse wasn't exactly that ground breaking of a engine to begin with considering the length of time Origins sat in dev, I could excuse the lack of advanced lighting or whatever the new tech buzz words are right now.

? I don't think this is direct toward me...

The point I was making was related to the art style. The darkspawn were not designed, within the limitations of the in-game engine, as being representative of their own lore. The best we got were the broodmothers.

I insist on chalkspawn. That being said, I think they're an improvement over the zombies hurlocks knights.

Personally, I think the new ones look like zombies, and the old ones look like lizard people. But then, I've also seen people complain that the new ones look like lizard people. It seems to be very subjective.

To me, a zombie was always a rotting looking human. The hurlocks looked rotting. The chalkspawn are just... pale? They're not like any kind of zombie I would imagine.

Origins and Dragon Age in generl is supposed to be Dark Fantasy, you would kinda expect the world to be dark and foreboding, not look like a skittles commerical where you can Taste the Rainbow!".

Color is not incompatible with "dark."  Dark does not mean ugly or blech.  Mass Effect 2 was the dark middle chapter--lots of color and some truly beautiful art design.  Fallout: New Vegas is freaking apocalyptic, and it employs lots of reds and colors other than brown, black, and grey.  It's not either Skittles or the color of poo--there's a way to employ color to make "dark" look good as opposed to just a pile of brown stuff.

Well, their face looks like it's coming apart a bit, with the lipless mouth and the blood coming out of the eyes and sides of the mouth. But I suppose that's not rotting, per se. They also look a bit possessed with the eyes blackened like that.

Yeah, you can have dark and ominous while still having relatively colorful environments and such. Dark is more in the themes- hell, even if you had a really dark plot moving but had it contrasted with a more colorful environment that could be interesting.  Some stuff needs to be literally dark though too.

But I think it comes down to variety too- you don't want everything brown and bland, just as you don't want everything bright and cheery.

I'm reminded of the brouhaha over the first Diablo III screens that were somewhat colorful :D:

I thank you for your feedback, but am positive that you will find that you are operating under certain misapprehensions regarding the gameplay of Dragon Age II.
And pretty much everyone working on DA II worked on Origins, so it's possible that two minutes of footage do not represent the totality of the game.
Still, you may find that Dragon Age II is not for you. That would be a shame, but it may happen. I hope you find a game that better suits, should things come to that.

very much like Japanese hack n' slash games.

I really wouldn't classify them in the same vein, Dynasty Warriors doesn't really play anything at all to DA:O on crack.

Exactly! Unless you consider the original fighting game, Dynasty Warriors 1, then you could have a considerable argument with a one-on-one thing going on.

But in the end, Dynasty Warriors 7 will dominate so even if they have rare spot of some sort of hack-and-slash elements in DA2, it can only be a nice addition.

[Yes. I'm serious. I like both Dynasty Warriors AND Dragon Age. What an idea!]

Mh nop it was just a game show in Vienna. It was also at Eurogamer in London, I saw it there.

But that does not mean that is the final product. They probably wanted to show off the new gameplay, not thinking that the unfinished graphics would get people this riled up.

To me it looks like the lighting is the problem here, I dont know if they are using spherical harmonic for the self shadowing but somethings not on. Anyways its obviously not finished and if any of you are interested you can go and download the Unreal Dev Kit and see how it all works for yourselves (I know they arnt using Unreal but still).

Hm, really? Well, thanks for the info. Hadn't been 100% certain. But that's... weird. To me it looked like some early test demo that only testers were supposed to see. That certainly changes my opinion, at least part of it. If Bioware hadn't wanted something to be judged by the public, they wouldn't have released it to the public. Showing off something unfinished is just asking for complaints.

When you think about it, turning Super Mario Bros into a dystopian adventure with some cyberpunk feel is unusually inspired

Given that it's the same model that appeared in Origins, I saw no reason to be. After all, most of the concerns have been around the animations, not the sword itself.
Of course, I'm unapologetic about them, too. ^_^

So when you're brought into the 4th Circuit Court of Upsettingshorts and charged with two counts - Origins and Awakenings - of 1st degree implimenting silly swords in a video game, you'll plead guilty?

My chief prosecutor will be most pleased.

Aside from neon signs FONV DOES look pretty brown and post apocalyptic, like it should, because thats kinda what you would expect from the setting.

All classes of darkspawn now look like they are afflicted with the same disease, rather than one group mysteriously turning blue, which is nice. As to why some of them wear coifs, I can only assume it's a comfort thing.

While some uniformity between darkspawn sub-species sounds like a great idea, isn't this exactly what's happening in Dragon Age II? Suddenly the hurlocks have mysteriously not only changed skin color, but also facial features and skeletal structure!

If there's one thing I appreciate more than quality art style it's in-universe coherence (besides that I, personally, prefer the original darskspawn hurlocks a lot more).

To give a fairly basic example, imagine that between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back Imperial stormtroopers suddenly all turn signal yellow, their visors became rectangular, and their armor grows spikes on the joints, without any explanation whatsoever. Doesn't feel right at all...

If the world suffered a nuclear fallout everything most likely would be brown and grey and dead, just saying.
