All classes of darkspawn now look like they are afflicted with the same disease, rather than one group mysteriously turning blue, which is nice. As to why some of them wear coifs, I can only assume it's a comfort thing.
While some uniformity between darkspawn sub-species sounds like a great idea, isn't this exactly what's happening in Dragon Age II? Suddenly the hurlocks have mysteriously not only changed skin color, but also facial features and skeletal structure!
If there's one thing I appreciate more than quality art style it's in-universe coherence (besides that I, personally, prefer the original darskspawn hurlocks a lot more).
To give a fairly basic example, imagine that between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back Imperial stormtroopers suddenly all turn signal yellow, their visors became rectangular, and their armor grows spikes on the joints, without any explanation whatsoever. Doesn't feel right at all...
You're right, it doesn't feel right at all, but if they gave an in-game explanation as to why the darkpsawn look the way they do, I'd me a little more OK with the changes. IHMO it seems like they're abusing artistic licence a little, I never found any problems with how the darkspawn looked in the first one and I'm not entirely sure about what group of blue darkspawn mike is referring too.

I thought they look purple-ish.
And the reason they look purple-ish is because Qunari have purple-ish skin?

Where is the big book of Dragon Age World Setting? We need it now!

I can't even imagine what constitutes "abuse of artistic license." If you saw the new darkspawn and immediately knew they were darkspawn, then they haven't asked anyone to make tremendous leaps of retconned faith. (But I'm not going to deny the Skeletor thing. I'm just going to take it as a nod to the people who grew up watching that show.)

Ehh, now you mention it. I read it somewhere that:
Human Broodmother ->Hurlock
Dwarf Broodmother ->Genlock
Elf Broodmother->Shriek
Qunari Broodmother ->Orge

So just make them gray and give us the cool, creepy, and detailed darkspawn of DA2? Seriously, the darkspawn look like malnourished ragdolls.

I've learned that I can't go by the "looks" of everything I see on the net (particularly videocam of a WIP). The first game I had bought (in a very, very long time) I bought from watching a 'Trailer'. Well, no, the game didn't look anything like the Trailer. But after I got over that, I did enjoy the game very much. All I'm saying is to keep an open mind and see the game up close and personal before making final decisions.
Those aren't game trailer, they are in-game screen shots Bioware released.
I don't mind the difference between the trailer and the actual game, I mean look at Sten.

Since game trailer now days are done by different company as oppose to game develop company, I don't mind at all.
I just post what I saw and what I know and hope the developer can shade some light on the situation.

No...that post wasn't at you. Just a general answer at OP. But the other was (about the Qunari/Ogre thing). I remember that page you linked, but can't remember reading that much of it. Must've been one late night when I was way past getting some sleep.Felene wrote...

Perhaps I chose the wrong words. I was not implying leaps of retconned faith just trying to make a point that the new look differs from the original, though they are afflicted with the same disease which as I assume, leads to them looking like a similar, pale race of creatures. That actually makes some sense to me although I cant help thinking of Frank Langella as Skeletor whenever I see them

Yes, let's stay on topic. Maybe the Devs can explain the whole darkspawn = "I'll get you, He-Man, and your Battlecat, too!" look.

What the hell are you guys THINKING? Someone needs to slap the lead artist in the face
Lemme guess, in mass effect 3, wrex will be wearing a blouse and garrus will wear a male stripper outfit?

To be fair, I thought the Darkspawn from the first game looked pretty uninteresting and forgettable.
Even though they could have made them look a lot better, at least they don't like reptilian Orcs from LOTR now.

This, folks, is a man who has never met Matthew Goldman. He is not a person you slap without consequence.
Thankfully, the internet makes such threats consequence free. OR DOES IT? :innocent:

I honestly like both and refer to my earlier post of how the taint should slowly rot the DA2 ones to the ones seen in Origins.
What I thought was funny in Origins, is not that the ogres were blue and the genlocks were like greenish goblins, it was that the ogres and genlocks had decent skin (like the DA2 hurlocks) but the hurlocks in Origins looked like they went through a roaster and came out looking like deep fried humans. Now the DA2 hurlocks seem more in line with the Origins genlocks and ogres.
Now we just need to see the Shrieks, if there are any in DA2.

Constructive criticism is fine, but you need to hold off the insults if you don't want to get this thread locked. Also, being mean just isn't cool broski.
Salvador Dali is one of my very favorite artists and I hold many of his paintings very dear to my heart. But I don't have to have elephants or clocks in it in order to love it. Actually, one of his works called Girl Standing By The Window is one of his most simple, non-surreal paintings, and it's my favorite out of all of his.
There is a metaphor in there somewhere. Just saying.

I suspect that the amount of concern Matt has regarding how much ass some guy on the forums thinks his darkspawn suck would barely fill a thimble. Maybe less than that. If you care to offer some feedback beyond the "OMG RUINED FOREVER" variety, however, we might listen more attentively... but even then, this is a deliberate style choice, same as one might get in a comic book that changes artist. Some people may not like it, but... okay? Since when is that news?
