In fact, I've grown to love all of them after a few playthroughs. But still:

- Thane. He seems too over-the-top for me. You don't need to force personal drama so much to create a deep character. He also feels very out of place - like he doesn't have any other purpose than just be there being cool assassin and overly-dramatic romance option. Since I was never going to romance him and wasn't particulary interested in his family story, he always kept me wondering why I picked him up in the first place. I also find him oddly repulsive - he is one of the few characters I have hard time looking at. For some reason.
- Kaidan. Don't have much against him, but this "you are supposed to romance me" feeling kept me nervous through all the ME1. Hence, Virmire.

I had very mixed feelings for Jack and Zaeed, but I think they are supposed to be this way, so I'm fine with it.

And I actually like Jacob. And Ashley. Even Miranda. Oh, well.

It's odd that you have mentioned Thane on here. Most people on here (including me) have a human for their least favourite character. I don't think Thane is just a 'cool assassin' though. He doesn't fit into a stereotype that easily. He is deeply religious, has some very controversial philosophies and he doesn't really have a sense of humour. Personally, I think Bioware have done a great job with him, he is an interesting and multi-dimensional character. Just my thoughts anyway! Image IPB

Well, as I said, I've grown to love all of them  Thane as well. I started to enjoy his story and don't see him as a sterotype, of course. But it wasn't easy. I think he was the only squadmate who I really disliked at fist while I clearly wasn't supposed to (as opposed to Jack, for example). Still, I wish his character was more subtle and had more relevance to the main plot, it certainly wouldn't harm him. Or maybe I'm just amphibiaphobic.

First and foremost Jacob. He's written as the kind of guy that would very much annoy me in real life. I don't go for these "ghetto" type guys and he was so stereotypical it was painful.

Turian councilor - Takes every opportunity to be a dick for no reason whatsoever.

Samara - Self rightious hypocrite

Ashley - Same reason as Samara

Kaiden - I think he's very boring. Talks and talks about why we should pity him

Parasini - I forget how to spell her name that chick on Noveria who wants help doing her own job. Seriously do your job yourself! And don't **** at me in the sequal if i left you to it.

re: Liara - I don't think asari ages can be translated that easily. 106 is only a tenth of a potential lifespan but it's not really like our 18. Samara says Morinth went on the run at 40, which she considered young, but since an ardat yakshi can only be diagnosed when they hit sexual maturity, I'd assume 40 is adolescent. Then there's the conversation you hear on Ilium with an asari saying she's 60 years old and out from under her parents' feet, and off to join Eclipse. So I'd say that's young adulthood - maybe 21 in our terms. 106 is a fair bit older than that. 50 seems about right to go to university.

Re: Thane - I quite like him but not really as a romance and can understand the sentiment that he's hard to look at. I think snakes are cool but would I want to sleep with a guy with snake skin? No, not really.

He also suffers from the classic Bioware meme of the father with the dead wife and wayward lod (see also Carth Onassi, and to a lesser extent, JE's Sky, since his kid was also dead). The widower thing has been done to death.

His back story is quite interesting, nonethless, but the main problem, for me, is that he fills a very similar role to Garrus, who is my favourite character and therefore default choice for most missions.

And why Liara in ME1 during first conversation with Ashley (Ashley claims she wants to look as nice as Liara when she'll be 106) claims that for asari she'd just left childhood? Does it mean that 50 years for asari is "just".
On topic: if it only seems to me that Jacob's smile is a bit too wide?

Nevermind that Liara also found time, besides basic commando stuff, to gain a full doctorate from the university of "Skullum-what-so-ever" (I forgot the exact planet, but it is commented on in LotSB ) which should take up to a decade , depending on the subject and curriculum  and did several years of archeology before joining Shepard on therum in ME-1. She is a grown woman in her mid-twenties in human terms, even if Asari mature slower, or rather enjoy their carefree "maiden" years more than humans would.

50 years for Asari seem to be about the same a 5 years in human terms. Now most people up to 25 would certainly claim they only recently grew out of teenage-hood

Jacob's smile is not to wide.... it's more that he is baring his teeth, as if intending to chomp a piece out of Shepard every time he does. Let's be honest - whoever was the supervisor and/or lead designer on Jacob obviously was not the sharpest knife in Bioware's drawer...

Did you miss his whole boring speach on L2's and that Turian he hated? He spends most of the chats just babbling about how many horrible things happened to him after a while it;s like "SHUT UP KAIDEN!"

Pretty positive he spoke about Brain Camp once. Thats it, and he said he was over it and he never brings it up again.

Boring, sure. But I never felt he was whiny. One of the more levelheaded characters in the series to be perfectly honest.

I get the feeling that he/she thinks that "whiny" is any character who isn't as painfully stoic as the Shepard he/she doesn't bother to roleplay with, anyway.

I wouldn't say "ghetto."  His dialog after Freedom's Progress reminds me more of those horribly cheesy 80's action hero movies.  A less articulate Rambo, maybe.  I always wondered what happened to his ability to form complete sentences once he got on board the Normandy.  And, gawd, the horrible VO during his loyalty mission...  His voice actor seemed to hit the emotional emphasis all wrong, not that there's much proper emphasis you can make with such cliched and stilted phrases.

Kaidan is the least whiniest character in the games excluding Jacob.

And he only talks about it in detail because Shep prods him about it.  He originally brings it up to illustrate a point he's trying to make about Shep's relationship to the Council.

I was trying really hard to think up a character in Mass Effect universe I don't like and fail.

I can only think of few I don't care about but that's not because I don't like them.

I could think of worse ways to die, than to be biotic slammed in to Miranda's butt, so, I'll just say that I don't like Niftu Cal.  I  think he's the epitome of "LOL  RANDUM XD"  humor, and was just another opportunity for Mark Meer to use one of his wacky voices for an irrelevant, forgettable character.

Because there are far too many NPCs, I will restrict the following rant to actual team members--all of them.  Let's start with the old crew...

ASHLEY: Yes, she's a bigot.  However, looking at her family history, and the fact that she'd never really had much contact with aliens, it's understandable.  She's fun to talk to, and was my FemShep's BFF.  However, she is an absolutely horrible LI.  The poetry.  My God.  Not during sexytimes, dear, please!  And then there's Horizon.

KAIDAN: Nice, sweet, and fairly useful in combat.  Completely lacking in a sense of humor, and therefore absudly boring.  Most realistic romace buildup, though.  Also, Horizon.

TALI: Really annoying in ME1, both in and out of combat.  Learning about quarians was interesting on my first playthrough, but after that it was just a reason to abuse the spacebar.  I felt like she really "grew up" by the time ME2 rolled around, however, and I liked the change.  I think she needs to lay off the "all geth are evil" thing, though.  Romance was cute, but painfuly obvious fanservice.

GARRUS: He was a jerk in ME1; an obvious n00b despite his years of military training and C-Sec service.  Loved him in ME2 when he finally developed a sense of humor, and like Tali I felt that he'd matured, but Christ, enough with the angst!  I was also sad that I was denied bromance, and thus had to jump his bone for the sake of additional conversations.  Needs to shut up while we're in combat.

WREX: Turned the big bad thug stereotype completely on its head and was all-around well written and entertaining.  Became King of the Krogans, which in my opinion makes up for him not being on my squad.  No complaints.

LIARA: Uninteresting, creepy, and a complete sissy in ME1.  Just plain creepy in ME2, but I suppose after all she's been through, her complete 180 made some sense (and by some I mean enough for me not to shoot her writers).  Brilliant in LotSB, but it's a shame it took her that long to grow the hell up.

MIRANDA: Can you MarySue a little harder for me, please?  Not that her attitude doesn't make sense, given her background, but she is a massive pain in DAT ASS.  Yes.  DAT ASS.  Please, Bioware, your fans objectify your characters enough on their own.  You don't need to help.

JACOB: I guess I'll have to take a raincheck on that "human male LI with a personality" I ordered until ME3 rolls around.

JACK: Her backstory was a bit over-the-top.  I feel sorry for her, really, but I'm not going to do anything about it until she puts a shirt on.  No matter how awesome a biotic you are, bare skin does not reflect bullets.

SAMARA: A surprisingly deep character once you get past her controlled monotone.  The romance block was brilliant.  Her outfit... doesn't suit her.  Her ability to kill without hesitation and unquestioning adherence to the Code frightens me.

MORINTH: Goddamn vampire.  I hate vampires.  Really interesting character once you get past the brainrape thing, though.  Nonetheless, pure evil and gives me the creeps.

LEGION: No complaints other than he shows up at the last possible minute.  Why, oh why couldn't there have been additional awesome?

GRUNT: One-dimensional, but can you blame him?  He was only just born and has nothing to go on except what's been streamed into his head.  Pales in comparison to Wrex, but he makes a good meat tank.

THANE: Least favorite squadmate.  Bioware tried to cram everything that would make him appealing to female gamers all in one character with disasterous results.  I hate his flashbacks, I hate his stinking pile of emo-ness, and I hate his whiny little son.  A biotic sniper is insanely useful, however, plus his cut-scenes are sweet.

MORDIN: Hilarious and surprisingly deep.  Utterly useless and made of paper in combat.

ZAEED: I wish he had more emotions than "this takes me back" and "GRR RAR REVENGE RAR."  Hilarious at times and is a bonus to the "hold the line" part of the suicide mission.  Needs a dialog wheel.

KASUMI: Didn't like her at first, but she's proven to be both entertaining and useful.  Needs to get over her dead boyfriend.

SHEPARD: Mark Meer, for the most part, did a good job, but seriously failed at acting romantic or gentle.  Jennifer Hale is a bit better in my opinion, but she needs to turn off the auto-flirt when talking to Jacob.

SO YES, I have a problem with every single squadmate except Wrex and Legion (and strangely enough, neither are my favorites).  I can't really bring myself to hate any of them, though.  I'm a total sap.

I think Morinth is supposed to based on succubus mythology, the figure of Lilith, and not vampires. Not that it really matters.
