I haven't seen this mentioned in here yet (might have missed it in a thread, though): check out this thread in the DA:O forum about the release of Baldur's Gate 2 Redux, a reimagining of BG2 in the DA:O engine. First installment is released now and looks to be getting some good reviews.

I'm super excited about this! Baldur's Gate 2 was virtually the first PC game I got the pleasure of playing and it assured my love for this company, and now it's being revamped, on DA:O engines? GENIUS! I wonder if all the dialog will be intact, for instance the ranter crazy relationships one can have and all that pop up dialog.
Anyway, great job guys! I may not be able to offer anything in the ways of programming or other sorts of help, but If you except donations direct me that a-way!

This looks amazing, I wonder how long it will take them to get all of BG2 and ToB modded though...
If they manage to complete this epic mod, then I might just drop $30 on DA:O with the sole intent of playing the mod, rather than the actual DA game

It looks awesome!
I'll wait for the full SoA saga to be released tho, I'll lose my sleep if I need to wait to play the next bit

You might be waiting a while for that. Assuming the project goes the distance, the main plot alone will take us a couple of years at least to crank out. I'd say just bite the bullet and give it a whirl. At least that way you'll know whether or not the wait for the rest of it will be worth it.

There have been people threatening to make new-engine ports of BG for a long time now, and none of them have gone past about stage 2 of the 300 stages needed for a functional game.
I wouldn't expect this one to be any different.

Oh god! the feel is a spot on replica of the original feel from BG2. I love this. It's totally faithful.

This is probably a dumb question but does anyone know of a mod/remake of BG1?

There's no DA remake of BG1 (or plans for us to do it - not that that would stop others). There was one that was started for either NWN or NWN2 as I recall, but I don't think it progressed far.

I've never had Dragon Age, so I know nothing about the engine. I can see one major drawback though. Won't it be a MAJOR job, to get all the great mods to work on the new engine?

You misunderstand what we are doing. We aren't simply porting BG2 to the Eclipse engine (which would be impossible anyway), we are recreating it. Whilst some 3rd party BG2 mods could no doubt be recreated in our mod as well, we are not doing that. That's mostly because we are interested in recreating the vanilla experience as faithfully as possible, but also because we don't have permission of the original authors to reuse their content. Possibly the only thing we may consider would be dialogue fixes/corrections, as from module 2 onwards we will be ripping dialogue (audio and text) direct from an original BG2 local install, and thus such a mod could be installed by the end-user first and the corrections would carry over.
I can't speak for anyone else, but the majority of the BG2 mods I've ever used have been of the fix and tweak variety, altering the ruleset and such. A quick perusal of my BG2 mod folder reveals BG2 Fixpack, BG2 Tweak Pack, eSeries Party AI Scripts, Item Upgrade, Sword Coast Stratagems II, Under-Represented Items, Widescreen Mod, Bigger Fonts. All of those would be irrelevant in our mod (aside from aforementioned dialogue text fixes), as we are still bound to the underlying DA mechanics.
