Currently on a Hardcore run-through with my first Soldier and having a lot of fun with it (I've got most of the squad, Collector ship, plus a couple LMs).  I notice that the major difference between Hardcore and Veteran is that all enemies (varrens, LOKI, husks, etc.) have at least some kind of armor in addition to their health bar.  Maybe there were other differences, but I didn't pick up on them.  So now I'm wondering, what differences can I expect when I take the next step up on my next play-through?

There's no drastic changes from Hardcore to Insanity like the jump from Veteran to Hardcore. Enemies are more accurate, damaging, and use abilities more, but honestly I barely noticed much of a difference between the two.

If you've done Hardcore, you probably won't have too much trouble with Insanity.

You will die. A lot.

Enemies spam bullets like crazy, and putting you're squishy backside in the line of fire for only a few seconds will kill you dead.

Spam bullets?

You mean shoot?

That's it, in my vocabulary the verb "shoot" has been replaced with "spam bullets". Next mission, replacing "breathe" with "spam lungs".

This.

I find that enemies are more aggressive... but the jump between Hardcore and Insanity is slight compared to the jump between Veteran and Hardcore.

If you're happy with playing on Hardcore then you'll do fine on Insanity. ^_^

It's way harder if you're playing as a Vanguard. Infiltrators and Soldiers don't usually have a problem though.

There's not much difference IMO, regardless of class. The biggest difficulty jumps in the game are anything pre-hardcore to anything post hardcore since the game mechanics change due to the far larger number of defenses on enemies.

Once you've played on one difficulty that has tons of defenses then playing in another with tons of defenses isn't much of an issue. The same way there's not all that much difference between the different difficulties that don't feature wide spread defenses.

I guess difference would be similar to switching from Normal to Veteran difficulty.

What I mainly notice between Hardcore and Insanity as a mid to long range player like I tend to be, the enemies tend to work better together to keep suppressive fire on your position and make it dangerous to duck out of cover for more than a couple of seconds. Shotgun enemies tend to be more aggressive and flank more. Also, you do a little less damage per shot/power. Other than that, the differences are pretty minimal.

It's not significantly different. Enemies are more aggressive and do more damage, but since they don't get any additional protections it shouldn't take too long to adjust.

It shouldn't be to hard I've only done Insanity on my Widow Infiltrator and it wasn't that much of a jump. I think the hardest thing is planning your attacks so that your unable to go get flanked easily as you change positions.

Back to OP question, it IS harder, especially for a normal player ( like me ). I found that if I could get easily thru the hard parts of the game on hardcore, then I could do OK on insanity. If you struggle with hardcore, then insanity will be, well, insane. I can get thru the collector ship trap mission on hardcore without too much trouble, but always struggle on insanity. Everything is just a little bit harder and you die a lot easier.

@OP

Just tested some hardcore runs and I think the difficulty jump is probably class and playstyle dependent. If I fight from mid - long range, the difficulty spike it not that high. Vanguard on the other hand I notice quite a bit of difference - on Hardcore, I can blindly charge. Charging Harbinger with 4 goons surrounding him in the suicide mission would probably not end pretty on insanity but can do it pretty easily on hardcore.

Differences I notice:

- Boss, Elites do not use their ability as much - I estimate only half as much.

- They have more health and protection. Katana (insanity) Point Blank + Head shot collector drone wont kill it - it will be on health around 30% somewhat. On hardcore, it will be left will very very little health; tis as good as dead - have to aim foot to ensure warp bomb.

You just have to mind what squad mates you take when playing on Insanity. On lower levels, I found it doesn't matter much, but on Insanity, I take those that are most suitable for the situation.

Theres a massive difference, at least in my opinion. Enemies are now deadly accurate, to the point where they never miss, at all. And it seems as soon as you pop some part of your body out of cover they will shoot endlessly with said deadly accuracy. It's pretty godamn hard.

Insanity means choosing your squadmates more deliberately and micromanaging their abilities to get the most out of them. Be prepared to spend a good amount of time in cover, and capitalize on your class abilities. In general, Miranda / Garrus or Miranda / Grunt are good choices. Miranda has good squad bonuses, plus Warp and Overload to handle all types of opponents. Garrus has Overload / Concussive / Tungsten and good firepower. Grunt is a great tank if you're sniping and does well with Incendiary / Concussive. If you can combine powers to hit a single enemy with 2-3 in rapid succession then you can thin the herd quickly and make fights much easier.

It's more fun. There's a lot more strategy involved, and enemies don't seem to die instantly as soon as their defences are knocked out. Their health bar actually means something... which means all of those crowd control abilities that seemed wasted in Hardcore take on new significance when you need to keep enemies off your back.

And warp explosions are fun.

Heh, I played VG first - probably one of the hardest classes to master, hell I remember people saying that VG was broken on insanity when ME2 first came out. I beat it first on veteran then I tried it on hardcore. When I noticed the crazy difficulty jump I dropped my hardcore file and just went right to insanity since the only real dif was the level of Ai coordination. IMO, learn to play your class on veteran first and then skip hardcore altogether and go straight to insanity.
