A 512 x 512 exterior level that I am working on looks ok in the toolset, but once I load the level in a game, I get black triangles in the terrain in the distance. If I move around some of them disappear. I seems like some kind of engine optimization issue, where terrain tiles are not rendered because they aren't supposed to be visible (but they are).
Has anyone else run into this problem, or have a solution? I have no light probe in the area and I'm not exporting from Single Player as yet.

Haven't seen the issue myself but when you say they disappear when moving around - are you moving toward them or away?
Do those black areas have objects on top of them so they aren't rendered till you move closer and the terrain appears black because of lightmapping?
Also, even if they do appear, won't you have objects in between the player and that terrain to hide those triangles?

Here is a screenshot.

The black boxes disappear when the PC gets close to them.

I doubt this would cause the issue that you're referring to, but until you're doing those two things, then I'd consider all lighting somewhat suspect.Obadiah wrote...

I have the same issue with one of my larger outdoor levels. At a distance, I see black spots here and there that disappear as I get closer to them. I tried smoothing out the terrain in those spots, and it worked to an extent. It didn't fix it completely, but it did make the spots a bit smaller.

I regenerated the lightmap with a light probe in it, and did a "Do all Local Posts" from SinglePlayer. The black triangles are still in there.

I believe I've seen this before when having large expanses like that with the same texture and minor variations in terrain shape. Thankfully, for some reason, by the time I give the terrain its final shape and texture it went away.
You could try making some changes in the height and/or texture blending in those areas, and if that fails, you can also try increasing the tessellation by one increment. I'm not positive this was related to the resolution for me, but may be worth a quick try.

That is a good idea. I've been working some on the level since then - at the very least, now that my area had more trees in it the black splotches are WAY less noticeable.
