In all my playthroughs of this game I have not once used the Cain. I watched a video and thought "oh that's kinda cool" but aside from that I never really cared about the thing enough to bother using it. I got better functionality out of the singularity gun and its multiple uses than I felt I would out of the Cain.

I never use any Heavy Weapons, I rather collect the money when your Heavy Weapon ammo is full.

I have done a few of plays through the game where I did not use the Cain, because I wanted to prove to myself that I could take down, say, the Thresher Maw without it. But having proven to myself (at least as a soldier, infiltrator, and adept) that I can do it, I now only every carry the Cain once I get it (thanks to Zaeed's mission, I have it from the first recruitment), and use it to make the game play through a bit faster.

However, there are some fights that it simply takes the fun out of. The final boss in Overlord is a good example. One Cain shot trivializes what should be (and is, if done with normal weapons) a fairly epic fight. I've never tried in LotSB, but I'm willing to bet that (if it doesn't blow you up during the boss fights) it trivializes them as well.

I always play overlord just before the Reaper IFF, and the first time I played it { the last fight } ( insanity ) it seemed impossible.  I used AR + Widow with Inferno ammo, and just could not take down the armor fast enough.  Also used mattock.  Next 3 attempts:  avalanche ( no ), Arc Projector ( no ),  then Cain - took it down to just a sliver of armor left.  Then thing that makes that tough is that after each time the shields comes back up, more geth respawn.

This was an earlier quote from me.  I just now played as soldier right before the Reaper IFF, xbox insanity, and using Tungsten ammo with mattock and heightened AR takes Overlord final armor down in two cycles.  I have 5 assult rifle upgrades.

That's one of the reasons I don't like the Cain on that particular fight, though I use it rather liberally these days (hallway full of annoying enemies? Insta-kill them all!) I just feel like I don't get everything I can out of the Overlord boss fight unless I get to hear the tidbits of dialogue while I'm doing it. I sometimes hold back so that I can get all of the dialogue. Though, I admit that it makes the fight much more difficult for most classes, especially if I do it before Horizon.

100 credits per box just doesn't worth doing that, even more when the heavy ammo (batteries) are so scarce. That makes sense to do with the medi-gel, which is much more common and hardly needed, even on Insanity. But you're just wasting game experience pointlessly.

Besides, credits in the game aren't SO scarce that you need to do that. Not at least with DLC's.

I very rarely use any heavy weapons at all, occasionaly I use the blackstorm projector if I feel like I'm getting overwhelmed like in LotSB.

Exactly.  LotSB will give you credits and upgrades.

Heavy weapons can be a lot of fun.  I'm not going back to Horizon without my trusty Cain.
