I've seen a few anti-character threads in this section and I thought maybe it'd be nice to take a different tack for once.

Is there a character in the Mass Effect universe that you should dislike for any reason but just find yourself not able to? Either they've been deliberately written with the intention of being unlikable (or a foil to a more likable character) or someone that is an archetype that you generally don't like but actually find yourself not protesting against for some unfathomable reason?

I personally can think of three off-hand:

1). Udina. I know, I know, the guy can be a right jerk at times (once very much so in the latter part of ME1), but I can't bring myself to hate the guy. I can't even put my finger on why exactly.

2). The Turian Councillor. I suspect the idea of having a three-fingered race doing air quotes probably helps in this respect here (it makes me giggle). He just reminds me of a really gruff grandfatherly type that was raised to never show their kids any affection in order to "toughen them up". I don't get the impression that he's really bad per se, just having to be that Third Judge ™; you know, the one on the panel that has to be negative no matter what happens? The Simon Cowell of Mass Effect, if you will.

3). Khalisa al-Jilhani. I know she's supposed to be rather abrasive (being the futuristic tabloid journalist and all), but she just seems so...cartoonish rather than malicious.

It's tough, I'm not sure I know who I should dislike, aside from those three.

Aria's a criminal warlord but I can't help liking her. I also find Conrad a welcome amusement, and I know a lot of people just find him annoying.

I love Jack but I can't figure out how they intended for us to feel about her character, exactly.

I don't know if we should dislike Aria...but she is one of my favorites, too.

I also like Nassana Dantius (she is voiced by Grey DeLisle!), the councilors (air quotes), Khalisa al-Jilhani (her SB vids are hilarious) and Alestia Iallis (she doesn't know Benezia any more than Shepard "knows" President Huerta)

I don't know how we're supposed to feel about her, but I like her. One reason is that I like the way her name sounds - she has one of the most beautiful-sounding names in the game. Yes, she's asking suggestive questions, but in a rather tame way. It's a very long way from her to the likes of Fox News - now here's something whose ME equivalent I could hate with a passion.

Other characters I should dislike? I don't know who I *should* dislike, really. Maybe The Illusive Man? I don't trust him and don't agree with a part of his agenda, but I do like him, he's too fascinating to hate.

Udina: He has his problems, but he knows how the system works - I respect that.

TIM: Martin Sheen's voice is addictive. Plus, I respect TIM's cunning and his ability to manipulate a situation to his advantage.

Turian Councillor: A little conflict with Shepard, but that makes him all the more likeable.

Okeer?: His voice. Enough said.

All of the above have something in common - some of the best lines in the games.

In contrast, Kaira Stirling and Alestia Iallis are two who I actively dislike.

I guess I'm not supposed to like Anoleis. But I do.

"Mr. Anoleis?"
"Yes, what? What!"

Are we supposed to dislike Zaal'Koris, due to the fact that he is a bit of an insensitive jerk toward Tali? If so, then I think that he applies for me, considering the fact that I agree with his views regarding the geth, and the quarian plans to retake their homeworld.

He's just a bit of a dick about it, that's all.

Miranda. I'm very conventional in my ethics. I despise Cerberus, and consider the fact that she'd even consider a chip indication of a skewed moral compass. Her clothes and camera angles make me uncomfortable. I manage to like her anyway. Partly because of her competence. Partly because of her obvious and heartbreaking love for Oriana. She's so afraid mere contact will ruin her sister's life, but she'll kill and die for her without hesitation without ever asking a thing for herself. If she were to express that same level of devotion toward a LI, she becomes my favorite type of romantic lead.

I was always afraid in the first one that he was going to try to frame me for a crime or something, since he gets your signature and photo of you pointing your gun...
I dunno, I guess I was expecting him to be smarter. <_<

As for ones that I should dislike...probably the Turian Counciler.  He's such a jerk to Shep, but in an almost comical way. He's just so farcically snarky.

Captain vas Qwib-Qwib. His views on Morning war are similar to mine.

Turian Councilor. Description of "harsh grandpa" works for my case, too.

for archetypes:

Kaidan. I'm not usually think much about such careful guys, but his past and views on aliens made me completely fan of him.

Miranda. I really dislike Viconia and Bastila, but 1) her skills 2) her loyality mission 3) her thoughts about saving Collectors' base earned my respect.

Jack. "You sound like a ****hole" is not a best way to start conversation, but... O'k, it's irrational, but I just like her

Viconia-Bastila-Miranda?

What archetype are they? I don't see many significant similarities between them.

Then you are a far more forgiving person than I, because she still makes me...uncomfortable XD

Not to mention he wanted to assume you as dead end the trial before you got back. Can't say I liked the guy, but I felt Bioware was trying to show the guy with the best idea isn't always going to be the nicest, and I respect that.

As for me, I can't seem to make myself dislike Conrad. a lot of people seem to delight in shooting him in the foot, but he just seems like a softy. Poor sap just wants to do some good, and his hero worship in the first game was kind of sweet...at first.

I was happy to learn he does some real good if you considered his feelings and starts "Shepards".

And I didn't dislike Warden Kuril as much as I should have. Aside from the...y'know...extortion racket, he was doing the galaxy a favor. Who knows? He might have started out with the purest of intentions, but he needed a lot of money to keep things going and was corrupted along the way. Now there's probably a couple criminals scouring space, all for some chick I rarely even use :P

Well I don’t know if we are really suppose to dislike them but here goes:

Zaal'Koris vas Qwib Qwib
Once I got over being pissed at him for his initial ****edness to Tali I actually found him kinda awesome. That and his comment about respectable names like  “Iktomi” and “Defrahnz” made me laugh so hard.

Turian counciler...or any of the councillors in fact. To me they only really got stupid about not believing you at the end. It strikes me that allot of these issues could be solved if someone just put a dam camera on Sheppard’s helmet.

Aria. Yeah I have no idea why, she should ****** me of but she dosn’t.

Nassana Dantius. Part of that might be because she voices Azula as well. (yes I used to watch Avatar...shut up =_=)

Jack. Not usually into the whole “I’m an **** but its ok cause I have a tragic past” thing but Jack is just awesome. I love her tats (I’m a bit of a body art freak) and she seems to speak her mind more than the others. Tho her bra strap thing looks a little silly, they would have been better having her topless. Her tattoos are her costume but I suppose the censors wouldn’t like that.

Of topic: is it weird that jack wears less but still comes across as less ****ty that Miranda?

Zaeed. He’s an ass but I could just imagine sitting at his feet listening to his stories all day.

Saren and TIM...no wait that’s not unusual, I have a thing for the bad guys I think.

Turian Councillor: I get the feeling that, if you could know him on a personal level, he wouldn't actually be all that bad. That, and he mouths off to you, Shepard, the most badass human in the galaxy, and does so with utter impunity. That takes guts.

Captain Enyala: Her epic burn of Miranda automatically made me love her. That, and I had the feeling during the entirety of Miranda's loyalty mission that I was only hearing one very biased half of the story, and that Miranda's father wasn't the complete monster she made him out to be. Hell, he installed copy protection in Miranda, that's reason enough for me to like him.

Morinth: Sure she's a murdering, sociopathic sex demon, but I get the impression that she listens to METAL!!! Just like me. And we both have swords on our walls.

Harbinger: He sounds exactly like Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget, and after I realised that I couldn't imagine anyone else speaking his lines. I can just picture ME2 ending with him saying, "I'll get you next time, Shepard! Next time!"

In ME1,Udina, Wrex, and to some extent Saren.

In ME2, the list of significant characters is much bigger: TIM, Miranda, Jacob, Mordin, Jack, Grunt, Thane, Morinth, Quib Quib, Udina, Wrex, krogan in general, Conrad, Aria.

Wow....did you start off deciding to hate everyone in ME2 or what?

For me it's Wrex and Benezia in ME1.

Wrex - first time I saw Wrex was the first time I saw a krogan and I was like wtf, I'm gonna have THAT on my ship!? For the first half of the game, I was expecting him to slug me when I try to talk to him.

Benezia - I brought Liara to Noveria with me, which helped redeem Benezia in my eyes, even though the voice-acting of both made me cringe all the way. Not to mention her goddamn boobs which still puts me off to this day.

(Special mention) Liara - Although this has to include LotSB. Couldn't stand her in ME1, felt she was boring as hell, her voice acting was stiff and she came on to me after speaking to her twice. I also dislike the Asari as a race, bunch of blue alien babes made for fanservice. Hated her character derailment in Redemption, but didn't think anymore about it until LotSB came about. I still resent the need to assassinate her character to make her more spunky and introspective. But I can't deny I like her better for it.

In ME2 - Miranda, Admiral Quib Quib, Aria

Miranda - I knew she was the ice queen of ME2 and was in the same category as Morrigan, the resident b*tch that I invariably always fall in love with. But damn did I hate being railroaded into following her off Lazarus station initially. Still think she thaws out too fast, but doesn't matter, she's by far and over my favourite character in the series now.

Quib Quib - I had a good time sniggering at him when I first did Tali's LM, but when Legion came about with his back story on the geth, QQ's reasoning won me over.

Aria - I confess it was only recently after reading Retribution that my impression of her changed for the better. Before that, she was like a posturing two-bit criminal to me. In-game, it still feels the same, but I'm interested to see what'll happen to her in ME3. Plus a meeting between her and Wrex would be epic.

No, but there's really not much basis to start liking most of them. Terrorists, war criminals, crazy nigh-psychotic prisoner girl, blood thirsty savage (in the lead-up, no less!), murderer for hire, chemically-addicted amoral sex killer, Tali-hater, unsympathetic Shepard unsupporter, ruler of the Krogan/long time battle-loving mercenary, bloodthirsty hyper-violent race in general, idiot, or crime lord...

These are not the sort of people you should like in general.

Why does everyone keep listing Wrex? You're not supposed to dislike Wrex.

@ magelet - I thought Conrad was going to frame me or something too! Especially since the journal entry said ominously/suggestively, "He seemed like a harmless fan..."

The Illusive Man tops the list for me. Coming into Mass Effect 2, I expected to hate him. I hated Cerberus from ME1, I resented having to work for him, but I ended up really liking his character. Martin Sheen gets a lot of credit for his excellent voice work, and the character is also very interesting for his complicated motives and moral ambiguity.

Zaeed is another. Everything he says is gold! I love bring him on missions just to hear his commentary. I'm a fan of the grizzled old mercenary shtick.
