Very well, I support “Total War” against the batarians. In all fairness, “extreme violence of dubious necessity” is, to my way of thinking, a fine working definition of “Total War.”

But you know who else has a current and historical tradition of slavery? Asari. In the Krogan Rebellions (according to Cerberus News), and legally protected on Illium. Now that's some lamentation just waiting to be heard, right?

A few Asari commanders had Krogan doing manual labor yes. Once they were found out the situation was changed and the commanders court marshalled.
Illium is outside council space.

Illium is indisputably an Asari world, and look how long the Batarians got away with slavery. Clearly Asari covered for them to leave them as the primary focus in order to distract others from their guilt, despite their efforts to ignore and downplay their history. Clearly vile, evil women who should be punished.pacer90 wrote...

Can't trust those Batarians, it's the shifty eyes.
And the slavery. That's pretty bad too.

Or french maid outfits.
Or just about anything not a jumpsuit or a stripper outfit. I demand more variety in our over-sexualized sex-appeal race!

Yeah, a "Shin Akiba" DLC would be nice. With Shepard having to investigate the indoctriantion signal embedded in those Asari porn games, something like that... Definitely more fun than some dull genocide of four-eyed slavers.

How do you destroy a culture, or an “integral part" of it, without destroying those who practice it? I say you can’t, not entirely anyway, no matter how hard you try.
Should it be left solely to Providence punish nations and peoples for collective transgressions? Ideally, yes. But the armies of Men are frequently the instruments of Providence, so if Khar’shan is occupied and/or feudalized by Alliance or Citadel forces, else destroyed by the Reapers, I’ll shed no tears.

If you went around wipping out every race that has ever done wrong in its history than there would be no one in the galaxy.
Well we aren't judging them by their past now are we? We're judging them based on the wrongs they are committing against innocent people on a daily basis.

The Batarians find themselves at a dark time in their history but I always think that redemption can be found and I look for that before I look to wipe everyone off the map.
Every other race seems to have had the good grace to keep their dark times in history to themselves. Humans weren't even off Earth yet and the Turian interplanetary civil war was just that a Turian war, no other race got pulled into it. The Batarians want to practice slavery amongst themselves, fine, have fun. When they start abducting innocent members of other species I think we can all agree they've crossed the line for tolerable behaviour and need to be set down, hard.
Genocide is the only rational choice. Torfan showed the Batarians that if they kept pushing we'd push back, hard. Since they clearly didn't (either because they can't or won't) learn their lesson complete anihilation is the only way. I'm all for giving everyone a chance, the Batarians had theirs, all bets are off.
I'm Commander Shepard and I approve this message.

If you are willing to slaughter innocent batarians alongside the guilty you are unfit to make such decisions. If you are willing to make judgments based upon exposure to a fraction of the population you are unfit to make such decisions.
You would be more correct if you suggested a rigorous campaign against batarian pirate activity in the Traverse and the Terminus Systems.

The problem I have with this view is that you seem to be lumping all Batarians into one group and one culture that defines slavery as acceptable. I doubt that Batarian society is a single monolithic culture that universally agrees on every issue.
When you say Batarian society approves of slavery, you are referring to the opinion of slave holders. I'm sure if you were to ask a Batarian slave or member of a lower caste what they felt about slavery, they would have a different opinion. Why should we hold the opinion of the slave-holders to be more worthy of respect than the slaves?
