Powers like GSB, Barrier and Fortification (i forgot the name of power) are great defensive powers.
I'd go with Barrier (i simply dont like the glowing effect of GSB, as a matter of fact I always choose offensive powers:P).
geth shield boos or barrier .

I see there's a misconception that GSB is not instantaneous, last I checked the shield is instantly applied without a physical animation, but Shep's omnitool will glow.
I think Barrier works even when Shep is staggered though. That's its real advantage over GSB.

The only case I used a defensive bonus power was with my infi and for that I took energy drain, which I tended to use more as a shield breaker and its cooldown wasn't bad at all - at least not when you hang back and snipe as an infi.

I pick whatever makes more sense in context.
For example: Barrier for Vanguard, GSB for Infiltrator.

When maxed out, Geth Shield boost can give u a 10% weapon damage bonus, Barrier can last for 2 minutes. Its your choice.

I almost never pick these up. The cooldown is just too long and I feel there are other bonus powers that give you a bigger benefit. I'd try energy drain if I were you, but if you really want a booster go with GSB cause it meshes better with engineers from a RP perspective.

I don't ever use defensive powers, but if I were to do so, I would use the power that associates best with the class. Biotic classes would get Barrier. Tech-oriented classes would get Geth Shield Boost. Sentinels would get...screw that, I don't need anything other than Tech Armor on my Sentinel. I did use Reave, though, before I made the switch to Stasis.
