So, by now..

It makes summer gaming a struggle because very few titles are released during the time when I have the most opportunity to play and am left replaying the same stuff.

I get on this board weekly if not daily to check up on the latest.
I consider myself hardcore attached to the ME franchise.
I've played ME1, twice only and ME2 only once.
I've downloaded all story related content thus far and even tough having a real hard time not replaying after the first DLC I've hanged on till this weeks.
After months of anticipation I'll give it a go for ME2 this weekend once more (also since I haven't hear of any DLC coming anytime soon.)
I am very surprised so many of you can replay this game as much, doesn't it screw the ME universe up for you, doesn't it get 'hollow' after a few times. I had that with kotor anyhow, was able to avoid it with ME
We play through the game so many times to try to look for stuff that we didn't find before, such as dialogue. Or maybe you had Miranda as your LI but this time you want Tali, or whatever. I can't help myself sometimes. I'll get a game and be close to the end and be thinking "Damn, I can't wait to start another playthrough."

You are thrown right into the action so it's a bit more exciting right from the start and more bearable for me on multiple playthroughs. I got to 6 playthroughs before it felt tedious and the DLC has only helped to pad out the game and it's felt longer and longer through every playthough. When they finish all the DLC for it i think that will be the last time i do a full playthrough of ME2. For ME1 it's way harder to bother to play it all the way through again.
But then i have plenty of other games to play.

I prefer ME2 as well, so you're not alone.Moondoggie wrote...
For me i'm probablya blasphemer in the way i can play through ME2 way more than ME1. I've done ME1 3 times and the third time just really felt like it dragged on. You need to do a lot more running around and talking in that game and once you have heard all the story it can be very tedious. It's a great game but a lot more slow moving than ME2 which i feel is way more pick up and play.

I'm almost in the same boat as you. I love ME1 and ME2 and have been meaning to play both and have open playthroughs. I keep on starting over in ME1 because I love it and listen to the music all the time but after eden prime I get burned out and stop then repeat the process. I can't just pick it up where I left off because its not as immersive. Same story with ME2 and DA:O sadly, I love all those games to death yet I can't bring myself to play them. I'm hoping the ME3 teaser will reignite the fire and get me through a playthrough of ME1 and 2.
Whenever that happens I load up the playthroughs where I've done absolutely everything and go on drinking binges. On the Normmandy, Citadel, Omega, drink till you drop. 'Tis fun. Then pretend you are passed out go play another game like Dead space for a couple of days come back and everything is fine
Does that even make sense? Wow I'm[smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/andy.png[/smilie]

Most people have played through this at least 5 times I would say. At least the hardcore fans who want to find out everything there is to know about the story, like myself. I find myself in a bit of a situation. I've completely burned the game out for myself. I mean, I still love the game, but I find myself not being able to play for more than an hour before I suddenly get insanely bored. Of course, when a new DLC mission comes out I play the crap out of it, but that's about it. Anyone else in the same boat as me?
Sure, but...my fix is to lay off for a while. I may even go back to ME1 and play again. I found I'd forgotten some nuggets or aspects of ME1 that I like all over again. Finished that and then went right into ME2 again with the new Shep (insanity level all the way - for the first time).
Absence for a while does wonders. In any case, I'd be surprised if anyone could maintain the same level of excitement and interest over and over again unless you are Mr Short Term Memory (SNL reference anyone?). Play something else for a bit, read a book (NOT necessarily some ME-based book) and rest.
I spend the hiatus online here now and again just to see if there's any announcements of note or new DLCs.

If you want more Mass Effect, just watch Babylon 5 instead. Seems like Mr. Walters and pals lifted the entire plot almost wholesale from that old television series, just changing the names of individuals and organizations. Sure, the cosmetic details are different. The core elements are all there, though.
I always thought it had a Babs5 flavor to it (which is also part of why I liked it). The Alliance in Babs5, the Alliance in ME. The Collectors, particularly the Collector general dude looks a LOT like one of the Shadows. The Citadel is somewhat similar to Babylon 5 itself. The Asari are similar to the Minbari with tentacles instead of "bone heads" (and Minbaris have male and female). The Narn could be vaguely like either the Turians or very petite Krogans. The psi-corps are somewhat akin to human biotics, though they're not so...dark and secret-policy and organized (the biotics, not the psi-corp). Then the psi-corp itself, the organization, is kind of Cerberusy in their extremist pro-human focus - but they're official Alliance rather than a private organization.
There are vague parallels and the overall Threat Down is similar...there's just no elder races that are semi-godlike to deal with and try to obtain their help from.
Oh, the Normandy is somewhat like the White Star, a human-Minbari joint design.

They certainly borrow heavily from Sci Fi in general. Bioware seem to be big fans of the genre besides all the obvious influence from Star Wars you get plenty of Sci Fi series. Aliens also seems like a big influence. The whole Feros mission about saving colonists felt like Aliens and the Noveria mission where you are battling the Rachni a strange alien creature led by a Queen.

Babylon 5 = Citadel
Human psychics = human biotics (including an analog in the BAaT facility, and the fear/paranoia of psychics in general)
Argumentative and petty council of alien ambassadors = argumentative and petty council of alien ambassadors
Shadowy rogue government org with radical pro-human agenda = Cerberus
Ancient evil race with vastly superior tech, the Shadows = Reapers
Ancient good race with vastly superior tech that is now gone from the universe, which is key to the defeat of Big Bad (Vorlons) = Protheans
There's much, much more that directly correlates to something in Babylon 5, but I haven't bothered keeping notes. The number of similarities and their relation to the overarching narrative is way beyond mere inspiration. It's borderline plagiarism.
At least they picked an outstanding sci-fi series to rip off, I'll grant them that.

That is pretty shocking. I've never watched Babylon 5 properly so i was not aware of how much is pretty much ripped off. I knew Bioware had some questionable skills in writing at times but needing to take other material and just re-write it to suit your needs is a bit of poor creative skill.

Thats normal! too much of anything would eventually lead to you getting bored. I think i've completed Mass Effect somewhere around 13 times and i just cbf continuing, i know some of you guys have completed it 20-30 times or more. I've stopped playing Mass Effect sometime in June and hopefully would get back to it after my final year of school. This way it would alleviate all the boredom.

Ah, OK thanks. Does that really make much of a difference in the insanity of insanity level? I played most of my runs on hardcore but this last playthrough (ME1 and then immediately ME2) I've been playing at insanity, and frankly finding that it isn't really that hard. I mean, with the FPS "Doom" and all the sequels, insanity actually meant "**** I N G IMPOSSIBLE!" but I'm finding insanity in ME to be merely slightly hardercore.

I was fully capable of beating ME1 over 18 times, however I'm unable to beat ME2 more than 4-5. It's fun, it's entertaining but... you can only hear the dialogue so many times.
I am thankful for the ability to skip dialog, especially now that I know if you tilt the thumbstick in the desired direction while skipping you will automatically follow a chosen path (Renegade or Paragon). Tali's loyalty mission, however, is filled to the brim with unskippable dialog. If only I didn't need those shields...
