And now I have made up my mind with my first playthrough. Rogues sound even more fun this time around. I'm gonna miss my Bard, Ranger, and Legionaire specs, but I'm not heart broken. Though I'd like to hear a little explanation as to why BW chose those 3. Not complaining, just curious. :) I suspect I know why, but it wouldn't hurt to hear the official word.

Rogue ftw!

I'm trying to keep an open mind on having to switch from the Ranger - in what ways in particular do you think Rogues sound more fun this time out?

Just curious. Not trying to stir the pot.

I've read a lot about the Rogue specs in DA2 outside this article and from what the devs have said. Also from the looks of the more recent trailer, Isabela's moves are quite impressive. IF her moves are any indicator of moves we can perform, I think I'm going to have a lot of fun. I like fast pace battles as well as applying tactics to those battles, which is why Rogues have always been may favorite class out of the three.(Mages a very close second.) I have a feeling that Shadow, Assassin, and Duelist were specifically chosen due to those specs being the most physical and thus matching the new battle system.

I am worried that they never have Hawke as a Rogue in any of the trailers, given that Rogue is my favorite class in the game, they seem to be treated as some what of a side note. The DLC addons for the Signature Edition do not inspire hope either, there are no dual wield options as far as what was shown, and not all of us like to use bows.

I also hope they have better gear options for rogues, in terms of looks and utility. Commander of the Grey looking like a common Road Bandit was disappointing, as was the lack of gear options for Backstabber Rogues, IIRC the best piece in the game was Warden commander Armor, and I don't like the idea of wearing Heavy armor on a light armor class.

Good to know Shadow is back, though, was my favorite Rogue class in Origins/Awakening.

If Bard and Ranger are out as specs then a lot of variety is gone from the classes.

What variety? Turning on a sustainable and then forgetting you are a bard after the melodramatic warcry?

One could make the argument for Legionaire Scout, I figure, that was actual variety, a Rogue Tank, but that spec was beyond broken.

A Scout turned a rogue into a warrior, no variety there.

It was still a change, though.

All Bard did was add a miniscule amount of stamina regen or damage.

All Ranger gave you was an experiance stealing pet.

Legionaire Scouts were arguably walking gods.

"a rogue aptly navigates crowded battle zones with stun bombs and can backflip away from danger or can teleport directly behind an enemy, depending on their skill set. "

the rogue can "teleport" right now? sounds awesome

Probably under the guise of 'stealth'. We could teleport in Origins, too, I used to teleport behind Mages and stun them long enough to get Mana Clashed.

Damn, looks like they're killing my ability to roll an "honorable fencer" rogue type character.

Arg! All this "I want to see what Lady Hawke looks like" stuff is killing me! She looks like however you want to make her look with the character creator and will have the same combat animations as every other female!

And while I'm ranting, no, rogue/warrior/mage/male/female/companionname/randomfeature is NOT an afterthought just because it didn't feature in a trailer. People react the same way to news reports... "they're talking about teen violence in the news this year! it must be a more widespread problem than it was last year" (false conclusion). I know it's natural to react to what you hear as though it is more important than what you don't hear, but please, people, it's WRONG.

Sigh.

It's just that they did the same thing with Origins, and Rogue was largely an afterthought, though, every job was an afterthought to Warrior in Origins, so hey (I am talking strictly about gear).

They didn't create one armor set for back stabber rogues in Origins, awakening, or any of the dlcs.  The only knife, the Edge, wasn't even good for Back stabber Rogues, it was best for Dual Wield War's, go figure.  I should not really have to hope and wait when the burden of proof, literally is on Bioware, and the dlc they released for the Signature Edition keeps up the tradition.

Complaining before the game is made, generally a better idea than afterward, when no changes could be made.  And the devs here often complain that complainers, as it were are not direct with their complaints.  I chose to be.

"The Duelist, though not as stealthy as the Shadow or as accurate as the Assassin, is extremely difficult to hit, so you can feel free to taunt your enemies while you hack away at them."

Does this mean you can be.... an insult swordfighter? :D Will Isabela belt out, "You fight like a dairy farmer!" during battle?

Apparent lack of Ranger and Bard, however, is saddening. Hopefully mages will get some kind of summoning (more than just Animate Dead), if Ranger is truly gone.

But that would implay, well at least to some degree, that one exctually prefers to play a mage over a rogue in the first place ... For me the loss of a possible Ranger specialication (with the changes to DA2 compared to DA:O it would kind of oddly make sense to me) wouldn't be made up by a better "summoning" mage for that I like my archer / ranger types too much.

Maybe Bards just aren't that common in the Free Marches :z ...

So that article doesn't say too much about the rogue specialization, beside that most basic direction of the specialization. Which is kind of good or I might missunderstand that the rogue are primarily focused on daggers (or any shortish dual wielding thingies) and that would leave out the possibility of a ranged specialization.
Therefore I seriosuly hoppe that either
a) the specilization list isn't complete
B) there is a looot more to it then the broad "brush strock" description that this article gives (probably is as that is usualy with these kind of pre-release info / previews)
Otherwise it would feel a bit to me as thethe rogue specilization would more supports a melee type of rogue

I can't argue about the gear selection, that's for sure. It's a different thing, though, to ask if rogues will be an afterthought like they were in Origins than it is to ask if they're an afterthought based on marketing.

For the record, though you have some arguments vis-a-vis gear, I disagree that backstabbing rogues were an afterthought. First, the best dagger has something like 30% bonus backstab damage, as does a lot of good rogue gear (Jenny's, etc). Second, look at the specializations: assassin is custom-made to backstab, bard has good synergy (both bards and assassins want cunning), and duelist complements a backstabber well--every rogue has times when they can't backstab. In fact, the backstabbing rogue is the only one that can make full use of every rogue spec. Strength or dex rogues get less from assassin and bard, and any rogue with a bow is stuck with ranger/bard because of the melee weapon requirement.

I strictly stated about gear. . .I don't know why you decided to make an argument about something I did not bring up.

Thanks for the link OP. Hmm, I wish the article was more informative. I love playing rogues in fantasy games, hopefully all the gushing the writer was doing in this article isn't anything more than excessive gushing. The combat animations in DA:O could use a little work but I hardly want my rogue to be backflipping around the area of combat.

I gotta be honest.

When playing ME and ME2 we get the sense of progression. Characters look the same but they evolved. From DA1 to DA2 seems theres going to be way too much redesign and that will surely brake the transition feel.

I do like the changes but... will definitly be weird.

Wait a minute, Isabela was redesigned?

Kinda looks liek the woman in the trailer now that I think about it.

As in, she is the woman in the trailer.

She decided to:
let her hair grow and stop colouring it
go to a stylist and get a new get-up
change her makeup
and spend some more time at sea, getting a nicer-looking tan

I approve :o

At least it's realistic if nothing else. It's definetly possible to change your look that much, I do it every Halloween.. Um, as in, I dress up.. Normally I'm the jeans-and-leather-jacket-too-lazy-to-put-on-makeup type, but on Halloween I go all out and even add a miniskirt/dress with a miniskirt. And people never recognize me, so I know it is possible.

Just remembered that I forgot one thing though:
to finalize her new look, she decided to get a piercing :)

edit: after Lowtown, someone should update the official site with Hightown now

Maybe these are just specs for Rogues they have announced at the moment and not all of them?

Given that the specs are now tree-like, and can be beefed up to stronger versions of themselves, I suspect that these 3 specs will be it (until expansions, etc.)

Devs only have so much time...

What's the timing on all this?  (Sorry, haven't been following DA2 news much until now.)  Because if Hawke was a kid when Lothering fell to the darkspawn, and that event was within 1-2 years prior to the Warden defeating the Archdemon in DA:O, and Hawke is now in his/her 20s...well, all I can say is that Isabela has held up remarkably well!

Assassin, Shadow and Duelist are all specializations available to the rogue

Hmm, doesn't say that they're the only specializations available to the rogue.  I think I'll continue to hold out hope...
