It establishes visuals, a bit of plot and expectations. It explains a little bit of the framed narrative to uninformed masses. While it might not give value to those who expect gameplay, it's still a valuable trailer for those who were comparing visuals to pictures from ages ago and such.
There is gameplay in there, as you're seeing in-game shots of combat.
If by gameplay someone wants to see a walkthrough of the game in progress, as in a still shot of the screen while someone plays it along with all clicking and GUI menus visible and such, that's something else completely. I have no idea if we're planning something like that. Maybe, but I suspect that's of select interest. Mike would be the person to ask.
See, but the whole cry for "let's see a gameplay trailer" was specifically made to address the fact that the only gameplay footage we've seen so far gave the impression that the game is hack 'n' slash. Everyone at Bioware quickly went into damage control mode because of the negative feedback, taking down all links and references to said footage, and claiming it was not representative of the actual gameplay. So here we are waiting for this new footage of what the game is actually like, but instead we get a really cool montage trailer, and still none of our questions have been answered.
I say this to point out the obvious, not because I didn't see this coming. I do believe the game has become more of a hack 'n' slash game, with only a little tactical element involved, and the devs are trying to hide this fact, or at least mask it long enough so that we buy the game and enjoy it anyway. I think the game will still be fun in its own right, and I still plan to buy it, although whether I pre-order or not is still something I've yet to decide. But I'm just tired of misinformation. If I see a duck, and I call it a duck, I expect others to admit it's a duck. Whether you like ducks or not is a seperate debate. DA2 is not a tactical RPG in the vein of NWN or DAO, it's a very different animal. To keep insisting it is despite the only evidence indicates otherwise is frustrating.
That being said, I'm a huge fan of the classic gameplay of games like BG2 and NWN. I prefer that form of gameplay, it's just my personal preference. Bioware's story telling has always been top-notch, but the gameplay itself is still very important to me. It saddens me to see this franchise, which was a throwback for some of us, is going in a new direction. As I said, I still plan to play it, and I suspect I will enjoy it for what it is, but part of me will always wish DA2 was just an improved DAO rather than something different.
