Hm. I actually didn't much care for Isabela in the first game. I mean, yes it's true we didn't see much of her, but I wonder if I'll end up liking her any better this time around.

We knew next to nothing about her. The Bioware writing team is one of the few institutions I have blind and unconditioned trust in. I am certain they've made her a compelling character.

This. Maybe it was because she was too cocky, I dunno. Hopefully I can do some sort of rivalry with her if I don't like her anymore this go around.

Or shorts - at least during combat.   Do we know yet if any major NPCs have "locked" looks or if the appearance changes when the equipment changes?

As to everything else in the trailer...

HOORAY!

I'm still pretty pessimistic about the new art style and combat. Props for me are the character details and the lighting system.

It definitely looks like a more comic-book inspired art style. Each to their own, personally I don't like comics. Highly detailed characters but the backgrounds (outside Kirkwall / interior shots) are very bland. Both in regards to color palette and actual geographic features. Lighting system looks great, though. Contrast-y, but a bit smoother and easier on the eyes than Mass Effect 2's. I like it.

All the power-jumps, flips, mega-sword impacts... eh, I'll wait for more trailers.

And at least the templars had the sense to keep their armors on in this new, spiky-non-functional-exposed-flesh armor world (note: comment after examining trailer frame by frame in regards to Hawke, Quanari and Darskpawn).

Oh, and please make Cassandra's hair like in that concept art piece from a while back? Please? Seriously, her neck long pure black hair in that concept looked spectacular, made her a bit darker and more intimidating. As much as I didn't want it to be so, my first though now was "A Sister of battle from 40K in Dragon Age!"

Purely subjective, of course, as my entire comment. But please guys, consider bringing back the black hair ! ...:)

I think it's very possible some people might not like her in DA2, for sure. As you point out, though, that's what the rivalry system is for.

You can be a complete ****** to your companions and get bonuses and new dialogue for it.

This (www.youtube.com/watch) started playing in my head after I watched the trailer.

So exited Image IPB

Edit: Also, I just noticed that Cassandra looks a lot like Lisbeth Salander. Was she by any chance modeled after her? Image IPB

I typically despise playing as the default character, but it's looking harder and harder not to. I don't recall if I complained before, but... well done.

It's actually Isabela with one L. It causes confusion. I blame myself for giving her the unconventional spelling.

What do you mean? That is the proper spelling. Unless you're French, then it is IsabellE. But for latin people, it is either Isabel (portuguese) or Isabela (spanish), like they call the Queen of England (la Reina Isabela) - Although in Portuguese it is plain Elizabete or Elizabeth.

You should see the alternate takes of that knife throw.

It's amazing what sorts of things one finds to toss at an enemy. A pair of boots. A dwarf...

I know one person who would be very very mad at you!  "Nobody tosses a Dwarf! Nobody!"

Now, can someone point which moment is an actual gameplay? It all looks like Cinematics to me.

i agree about the premade characters.

but Bioware has a way to make a default character/origin feel custom.

even though they portray hawke this way, the only thing thats default is his story, which is the same for the 5 origins stories. What you do in the story, how you look and the way you act are all yours

I love the scene where Hawke raises his sword. I suppose that is the part where he rallies the people of Kirkwall for the qunari invasion.

I hope you people at BioWare made an awesome speech to go with scenes like this :)

Now Hawke can say it instead of, say, Alistair randomly popping in and out! :) Hooray.

And it's either that, or Hawke is just super psyched about coming to Kirkwall. I wouldn't blame him. It's so prettyyy.

Essentially what it boils down to is this: in Origins if you didn't get along with a companion you got nothing. No dialogue, no interaction and no gameplay benefits. So what we've done is added a "rivalry path" which is the friendship path in reverse. As approval goes down you get interactions where you argue with the companion, and this is the path where you could ultimately convince them they need to change.

Thus taking a stance with a companion that is argumentative is a legitimate way to develop your relationship with them, and there's no need to hunt for the approval bonuses in every instance.

I am excited for this, it's the most interesting of the new features that we've heard about so far.

Does that apply to all companions?  I can't imagine my blood mage convincing Wynne to convert to apostasy very easily.

There is a rivalry path for all characters, yes. And by "convince them to change" I don't mean you can convince them of anything... rather you might be able to convince them to change regarding their central "issue". If Morrigan had a rivalry path, for instance, it might revolve around you telling her that helping people can be a way to get what she wants, and thus afterwards she wouldn't complain whenever you went out of your way to help people. She would still have the same personality and outlook on life.

I had to say. About at least all of the important characters we seen so far(Flemeth, Hawke, Varic, Isabell etc...) Bioware made a HUGE step forward from what was in first Dragon Age and Mass Effect. At the moment characters look absolutely great, at least to my taste. (And come on Flemeth hairs wave with wind - that's dream come true).
