Still really iffy on the graphics and animation, but the characters look more normal than I thought they were going to, even if I don't like the look of the creatures.
To me the best part of the video was 'the whole world on the brink of war.' That makes me think that whatever this is will not just be a Kirkwall/Free Marches thing, but will involve other countries as well. That's more interesting to me. 'Cause, really, I only care about Fereldan.
One thing I don't like is the emphasis on what a gigantic badass Hawke is, but the PC could have been presented that way, too. 'All of Thedas turns to the one person who can save the world--The PC!!! OMG!' In game roleplay was far more open, and I expect this will be as well.

As approval goes down you get interactions where you argue with the companion, and this is the path where you could ultimately convince them they need to change.
I like this idea, but the question is, will it make sense? In NWN2, I felt okay being able to sway Ammon Jerro as his background (in how he became what he had) made it easier to manipulate him towards good. But there are some characters that I think would (and should) be very difficult to sway to your side (or even impossible). A chaotic evil personality turning over to lawful good would just be scary, though it would be interesting if you could get them to maybe become a little more neutral.
Can't wait to see how these relationships develop.
Edit:
Ninja'd earlier. People post too fast here.

But what happens if you stay neutral ? (say you get +10 approval in one dialogue and -10 in another).David Gaider wrote...
Essentially what it boils down to is this: in Origins if you didn't get along with a companion you got nothing. No dialogue, no interaction and no gameplay benefits. So what we've done is added a "rivalry path" which is the friendship path in reverse. As approval goes down you get interactions where you argue with the companion, and this is the path where you could ultimately convince them they need to change.
Thus taking a stance with a companion that is argumentative is a legitimate way to develop your relationship with them, and there's no need to hunt for the approval bonuses in every instance.
The way I see it, the only way to develop your relationship is to either get max approval or min approval, there's no middle ground.

You can be a complete **** to your companions and get bonuses and new dialogue for it.

This sounds immense. Personally I like what I've seen of Isabella, but there is always one or two companions in a Bioware game that I don't get on with (a good thing!) so to have extra content just for disagreeing with/hating them is awesome. Plus it adds more replayability, which should help lessen the blow of not having Origins to draw in replays. Exciting!

This seriously may be the single awesomest character interaction gamplay features I have heard of, ever.David Gaider wrote...
There is a rivalry path for all characters, yes. And by "convince them to change" I don't mean you can convince them of anything... rather you might be able to convince them to change regarding their central "issue". If Morrigan had a rivalry path, for instance, it might revolve around you telling her that helping people can be a way to get what she wants, and thus afterwards she wouldn't complain whenever you went out of your way to help people. She would still have the same personality and outlook on life.RinpocheSchnozberry wrote...
Does that apply to all companions? I can't imagine my blood mage convincing Wynne to convert to apostasy very easily.

According to David Gaider she is from Nevarra, which is just north of Orlais.

I have no problem with Isabella, mainly because I don't mind having companions I don't like. Could be interesting. I do wonder why she doesn't feel the need for pants. Bit odd, that. Well, if she's a companion, I can make her wear clothes. 'Isabella! For the love of the Maker, put some pants on! I'm just not that interested, and you're embarassing yourself.'

well isabella to me always felt like she was a rather promiscuous woman so i can believe that she uses her no pants policy to both distract male opponents and give her maximum agility:P

If you never go down the rivalry or friendship paths you will never get those interactions. You will still get plenty of interaction with the companion by way of their personal quests, which is where a lot of their development comes into play, but you won't end up being a close friend or rival if you play the middle ground-- which is appropriate, I think.

BioWare seems to be getting a lot of stuff
from Alpha Protocol. The framed narrative, the
professional/suave/aggressive personalities, the "rivalry" path (as in
you get bonuses even when people dislike you)
We had these things in DA2 prior to Alpha Protocal coming out, but I think that game did those things quite well (though I'm not sure I was sold on simply picking the stance without even getting a paraphrase). Chalk it up to great minds thinking alike, I guess.

I am curious as to why there are more Qunari though.. Perhaps there actually will be a Qunari invasion in DA2. Maybe the whole Mage/Templar battle will only be hinted at. Hm. Something to think about anyway.

Yeah, but their combat was so badly broken that it made the game unplayable. You guys, at least in all of Mike's empatic claims, kept the combat working right.David Gaider wrote...

It seemed like a summer action movie spot, not one for an rpg.
Edit-Not trying to be negative. It was put together well.
