Did you install Direct X from the install CD? Windows 7 ships with DX 11. NWN2 uses DX9. These can both be installed on the computer at the same time.

I can't even get that far now... My cd key is no longer valid. I retyped it 4 or 5 times and it stilll says invalid.

There's nothing in an install, especially with a DX error, that should invalidate your key.

Let me ask you: Your NWN2 purchase. Would this be simply NWN2 or did you get something like NWN2 Gold, or NWN2 Deluxe? If you bought the NWN2 Gold edition, then try using the Mask of the Betrayer cd key for the NWN2 install and see if that helps.
NWN_DM is correct, your toolset failure couldn't possibly invalidate your CD-Key install. So you must have typed it in incorrectly. There are some letters (becuase of the stupid type font they used) that look like they could be one thing when they are another. Make sure your O is an Oh and not a 0 Zero. The M and N letters can get whacked, as well as V and U, possibly 1 One and L ell as well.
And if you absolutely must (I've heard it occur from time to time) you can find and eliminate the NWN2 cdkey.ini file in your registry and either delete it or enter the correct CD key manually (my recommendation would be to delete it and reinstall altogether.)
Also, your specs are incomplete for giving you the best possible help.
OS (Win7, Vista, XP)
RAM (you gave)
Hard Drive size and free space (didn't see that)
Video Card and VRAM (listed the card but no RAM for it)
Processor (didn't see that)
and the NWN2 setup you've got (this can help with things like the CD Key issue, patching order and other such stuff, known issues, etc.)
Irrespective of all that, your toolset crash is generally caused by not having DX 9.0c Installed (I don't want to hear, "But I have DX 11 already... just install DX 9.0c okay, it comes with your disc for NWN2 under a folder titled Prereqs) No it's not rolling anything back, it's not a downgrade, it's two separate and unique files that reside peacefully on your hard drive and the toolset prefers to have DX 9 in most cases. (some Win7 users report a full install without DX9 and success, but this is not the norm.)
Another issue is that of the .net framework. Sometimes, it seems that newer versions of the .net installs just don't have all that they require to have activated to please the toolset. Anecdotal, but there it is. Sometimes an attempt to install the .net framework (also on the NWN2 disc in the Prereqs folder) can sort this out. Other times you might have to do more (see the Toolset Forums for more details.)
So there's some basic nuts and bolts for you to follow and if that doesn't sort it for you please post again and give more details. We're all pretty long term gamers here and brevity, while ideal, is not always an asset.

HAHA !! the CD key is registered in the windows register.
When you try to install again from an installation that crashed, it will find the register entry with the key and refuse to instal and say "invallid key".
You need to clean the key from the register

OS is Windows 7, 512mb on the vid card, its a Pentium 4, and hardrive is 228GB with 108 GB free. Trying to delete cd key and try again. It worked originally until I got the error prompt, but will keep trying, and yes I did download and install direct x 9... Fingers crossed!

Please, come back and write where you have found the key, so if anyone in the future would need the same information, s/he can find it!

I found it in the NWN2 folder, labeled CDKey.
