I agree, a storage space in the camp would be nice

Nope, the Storage Chest has limited storage too.

On the one hand, I do think it's somewhat unrealistic that we're able to carry around massive weight, although that is balanced by not having to spend ages trying to figure out whether it's worth carrying things (I spend enough time trying to avoid over-filling my inventory).

However, I find the argument that limited storage is due to file size/loading time a bit strange. Yes, it will have a small effect on those, but I can't imagine that loading a list of a thousand ID numbers would take any significant amount of time on a modern computer, and it would only be a couple of kilobytes; it might slow down loading by a second or two at the most?

My guess is that the actual items themselves have to be preloaded - which would take up a bit more memory and be a fair bit slower to load.

Presumably, this is also why the storage chest is out of the way at the Peak instead of at the camp that you visit (and thus have to load) regularly.

The limited inventory space wouldn't be such an issue if there weren't 100 different crafting components and other random junk strewn about everywhere. That is one minor complaint I have about DA so far, the item gathering reminds me of Oblivion in that regard.

Awww!  Now that 's really suckish.  so much for that idea, guess i'll just hold on to Named items and sell everything else as they depreciate in level.  thanks for the info Posted Image

Indeed. It would be much less strain if the crafting components didn't take up main inventory space. I mean, you fit 99 in 1 slot anyway, why not go the whole hog and fit 99 in [i]no[i] slots like you do with plot items?

that's a very valid point in my opinion; when I stored all those component stuff, my bag went from almost full to practically empty.  haven't even had a chance to mess around with crafting yet, spending most time with quests

As for realism, I take the liberty of inviting you to discuss it: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/9/index/159797

No purpose other than making backpacks a money-sink in the game :)

I make it a habit after my first playthrough to buy every backpack I come across in the game. Hint: The Quartermaster in Ostagar will sell you a backpack for ~60 silver before you go to the wilds, and if you go back to him at night before the battle he will sell you another one for ~60 silver.

lets be reasonable. It's so that you want to buy the DLC Wardens Keep to have that nice stash chest. I have bought all the backpack upgrades that I know of and wasn;t having too many problems with inventory (110 spaces for items total) But the DLC makes it much easier for item preservation especially for those nifty item sets you don't want to part with.

I heard EA is making Bioware make a DLC that has a bag of holding in it, its only going to cost 10,000,000 Microsoft points too so Thats quite a bargain. Give real money for in game items and quests, Glorious idea if i do say so my self.

I have 120 spaces - fully 100 of which are taken up with "**** I'm not using but don't want to get rid of". I wish I'd bought those two backpacks back in Ostagar.
I'm actually not buying Warden's Keep out of principle until I can get a storage site without paying money for it. At which point I'll buy Warden's Keep and then use both storage sites in order to better sort my hoard.

Both Kotor and Mass Effect seemed to manage infinite inventory space fine.

Erm,
Mass Effect didn't have infinite inventory space, it had a limit of 300
or so before it popped up with a message stating you had to 'destroy'
an item to make room while looting off a corpse.

Plus I like having to pick and choose what items really are of
use and which aren't, that feeling itself is somewhat realistic, rather
than having an ever-expanding backpack.  At least the way DA:O does it,
the player has to sift through their items and decide what they really want to keep, and what they should ditch.

Actually, the cap in ME was 150 items (at least on the Xbox, multiple identical items used multiple slots) and I kept reaching that limit all the time, partly due to constantly forgetting to visit the guy in the cargo bay.

The problem I had with selling items in ME was that when you tried to sell something, your inventory was all smooshed together into an unorganized mess.

You virtually had to write down everything you wanted to sell beforehand in order to make sure you got it all.

health potions, ingredients and such shouldnt take up any space. armor and weapons could take up more space to balance it though.

I agree Jab0r. Compared to ME the inventory in DA:O is very nice.

Regarding the WK chest, I wish they would have placed it in camp instead of at the peak. It kind of breaks my immersion that I have to travel across the map to get an armor I have saved for later or take a look at my runes for my newly acquired sword.

Gadd, download the official Camp storage mod made by the devs.  (Click Project above, should be one of the first listed).

Thanks, but the thing is that I have the xbox version of the game. Oh well, maybe that mod could find its way to the xbox live marketplace in the future, or even better, if they just could add it in a patch. That would be really nice. I don't use a lot of mods, but this one would be great.

Because the save files would get tremendously larger. Each item 'slot' uses up memory, 1x or 99x doesn't matter as long as they're the same item. Bioware already said this before.

EDIT: Not only the file size but loading times and stuff like that too.

LOL.  This is the funniest thing I have ever read in my life.  Thank you for making a beautiful start to my day.

Please point me to this priceless BioWare quote.

LOL.  An item will take up one long integer, as everything is referenced in the tables in the game themselves.

LOL.  This slays me.

Yes.

It's really just an extension of the design decision to favour tactical play over strategic play.

Since we have a camp, we can store things there.  But rather than make us decide which items to carry on each character at any given time (a strategic decision), we're instead allowed to have any distribution of items we would later like to have had be true retroactively, thus allowing us greater tactical flexibility.

I don't really like the limited space. I like to have some reserve equipment for various situations. read: all my part equips swords is sometimes more effective then equiping them properly however weird that may sound.

They want you go pick and chose, instead of just hogging everything and walking around the map. Now you have to choose what you carry with you and what you leave behind/sell/don't pick up.
