I thought Dungeon Siege taught us that we all need a pack mule in the party. I mean, why do you think D&D introduced mounts? To ride?

I think that any technical reasons cited are invalidated by the fact that loot you don't pick up seems to stay around forever anyways.
In your inventory, in a storage box, on a merchant or on the floor, it NEVER disappears anyways unless you destroy it.

Of course, a good reason not to carry around a lot of stuff is so you can outrun the large carnivorous creature your party POs while crawling.
