Gameplay hooks players.

Story is what keeps players.

I thought I'd give this a bump to see if some of the new players (or just people who haven't seen it) vote in the poll. Also, hats off to most everyone keeping it civil and not turning this into a flame war.

Gameplay.

I really don't care much about videogame stories (though I expect better from RPGs then I would a FPS or Platformer)

Story is important, very. If the story is poor it doesn't matter how good the gameplay is, I won't replay it or I won't buy it in the first place. That's the bottom line.

See I can very easily see the opposite of this.  It doesn't matter how good the story is, if the gameplay is atrocious, I probably won't play it twice, maybe not even once.  Don't get me wrong, story is still important, but gameplay comes really close, almost equal.

Yeah, that's a bump in disguise, what of it?  People need to vote on this, since we seem to have a lot of new members.

BW won't make atrocious gameplay they just want to know what they need to focus on the gameplay will be fine.

That being said. I think they should focus on the story the main arch and the characters relations and development the gameplay while I'm sure won't be lousy can come second for me. I just got done playing dragon age sense everyone and their mother on here keeps talking about it the gameplay and graphics weren't stellar I stuck around and am replaying the game for the story and the character development. I can deal with annoying game mechanics if the story behind all that is engaging.

Arguing semantics: you want game mechanics vs. story, as story is part of the gameplay package. But since we're doing gameplay here, I'll keep it simple and just stick with that.

Anyway.

Ultimately, gameplay decides whether or not I'll even beat a game, let alone replay it. I'll happily play a game with wicked gameplay but no story whatsoever (for example, Super Mario Kart), but you need a damn miracle to convince me to keep playing a game with broken gameplay just because it's got a wicked story (for example, Silent Hill: Origins). Miracles and I are rarely on speaking terms, so you can guess how often that happens.

I enjoy a good story as much as the next guy, but broken games are shelved or sold. No exceptions.

For a BW game? Both. And for me there was only one game where they succeeded in presenting both equally for its time, KOTOR.

I'm a plot gamer. I love my plot. But it really depends on the type of game. For ME, story is slightly more important than gameplay. For a game like, say, Duke Nukem? Gameplay is much more important than storyline.

But yeah, if you can give me a great story and decent gameplay, I'll love you forever. It's why I played the old Final Fantasy games (And also why I DON'T play any FF after 7.)

I think that gameplay is slightly more important than my namesake. I will not dish out $60 on a game that isn't fun, clunky game controls are more frustrating than fun. The story is important, too, but I have playedthrough ME2 many more times than ME1 because the former had much better gameplay, even though ME had the better story

With all the buzz about ME3, I thought there might be some people who haven't seen (and voted on) this.  Too bad I can't hand out those little "I Voted!" stickers.

Both are crucial in a single player campaign style game only. At least in CoD I can play multiplayer with amazing gameplay if the story sucks.

Gameplay is more important.

While story is incredibly important to the game, you need to have a good gameplay experience to motivate you to continue to see that story, though the story (And results of Mass 2... Default import sucks ass) was the only reason I continued to play Mass Effect 1 twice... ****ing thorian

Mass Effect Genesis: awesome

In the case of ME3, both are very important, but I couldn't tell you which one is more important. That really depends on the entire finished product.

In general it's completely impossible for me to choose, since so many games have succeeded with a weak story and yet others (like Bloodlines in particular) prove that you can have mediocre gameplay and still have an amazing game. Again, I prefer to judge the product as a whole.

If the only thing bringing me to a game is its story, I may watch a playthrough or something.

I don't like a poll for this particular kind of question because it skews the meaning of any given answer in total favor of one or the other, when in fact it's a more complicated question than a two-way multiple choice answer. I prioritize gameplay in all things gaming related, but for a series like Mass Effect, story takes a much higher priority than it normally would in a game like, say, Super Mario Galaxy 2. It wouldn't be inaccurate to say I hold them in pretty much even regard for this particular series.

If I like the story, I can accept the worst gameplay. I will swear a lot, but I'll keep playing to experience the story. But if the story is lacking, gameplay should be at least awesome to keep me interested. Of course, I'd prefer to have both great story and great gameplay, but if I can't have both, the story always goes first.

Both are important. But Story to me is much more important. If I wanted to PLAY an FPS, there is no shortage of titles to chose from (Halo, CoD, Battlefield, etc). But what if I wanted an engrossing story set in the ME universe? Where else could I go?

Bottom Line: All shooters have the same gameplay (more or less), story is the only thing that is truly unique to any particular series. How about we focus on what makes it unique.

Both are important, story is what made me fall in love with the series in the first place and trying different scenarios with decisions on different playthroughs, but gameplay is why I keep playing it over and over again, it is fun playing the different classes and there is more than one way to play each class so you can experiment a little bit with the different classes.
