Warden, singular? Hawke, singular? I've got several of the first an I expect I'll have several of the second.

How many completely different PCs I can play is a big part of how I judge the quality of an RPG.

Warden: Male Dwarf Noble warrior who was basically a ****** and is now ruling Ferelden with his puppet king Alistair
Hawke: Female Mage who will be basically a ****** and rule Kirkwall as Viscount or whatever

I kinda want to start my own little tradition where all my first characters in Dragon Age are pretty much thugs, since I usually play as myself in other RPGs so I'm basically a good guy most of the time.

All I want from DA2 is to get involved in the story. If there's one thing DAO taught me it's to wait with making up motivations and personalities until the very last moment; I played elven Mage first, and spent most of the game desperately groping for something that would make me actually care about what happens in the main plot, then a Human Noble and ended up immersed up to my eyeballs.

Warden/Hawke: What is this "morality" thing you people keep talking about?

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!

If it helps you feel any better, I lost about the same amount of time when I clicked on the Tvtropes links that others put.

well, since i can play the game more than once, i will start with a male rogue that is a robin hood kind of guy. Then an evil warrior or mage, and then something else a few more times.

in Origins i started the same way with a Dalish rogue

I play all my characters the same way: Machiavellian, but willing to help others in need unless helping them clashes with something else.

Well I don't think I've seen this but I will just say that my main Dalish rogue actually didn't like shems too much and didn't really hide it but the lose of Duncan and the Wardens and the fact that it's Alistair and he left to defend Ferelden weighed heavily on him. Basically it made him take his responsibility very seriously so he was kind to those he was trying to recruit, he tried to build as many bridges as he could even if it meant helping shems who could help themselves. Which he doesn't like to help people if they can help themselves which they should be able to do if they want the reward but again being diplomatic took over a lot of his actions.

Now my Hawke doesn't have to worry about making friends, he's more "I'm looking out for me and my family." so he's more prone to being rude and pragmatic in his quest to ensure he and his families safety and comfort.

At this point, I'm probably going to use one of my female city elf wardens to import as in my view it was the most compelling origin story. So, with that, my warden really didn't care about morality at all and went through the campaign pretty much in an emotional blood haze that just happened to culminate in the death of an archdemon.

With Hawke, I'll likely do something similar. Depending upon the scanario presented, my goal will be to push Hawke as far as I can to one mental extreme or another. If the word "reasonable" can be used to describe my character, then I've done something wrong.

I'll probably make the choice that I feel is best at the time, regardless of what I did in Origins. After all, we have someone entirely new, so the circumstances will be different. About the only faction that I might side with no matter what is if we encounter the Grey Wardens. I figure I set them up well enough that they can be trusted.

My "main" Warden was a male Couseland Duelist. A good natured swashbuckling hero type that cracks jokes in the face of death and got along well with all his companions and always ended up doing the "right thing" and trying to help everyone he could without being a self righteous blowhard.

the requisite Hawke for this save will be a male mage, his personality's fine aspects are still up in the air but I want to play him more along the lines of Alexander or Napoleon: Ambitious, suave, and a pragmatist rather than an ideologue who sits squarely on some "good/evil" axis.

I kinda consider most of my Wardens canon, ha... but I guess Aura (rogue) would be the most canonical canon in this side of canonland, for me. And then Cora (warrior), Argent (warrior), Caleb (mage) and Sarah (warrior).

Funny, I like rogues and mages the most, but I have most warriors. It's just that I have lots of non-canonical rogues and mages, so...anyway, I suppose I'll make my Hawke the oppost of my Warden. Aura!Hawke would be a male warrior, good, honest, but a little bit limited. Argent!Hawke would be a female mage, calm and pacifist. And the list goes on.

Unless it is to unlock content I try to have my character's actions reflect what I would do in real life. As such I try to avoid the raping and pillaging though I will indulge in a bit of pick pocketing and rummaging through people's houses.

I don't know...I don't WANT to copy my Warden's outlook/personality, because that just feels lazy, and yet I really liked playing my Warden like that (my main/canon Warden that is):

Lawful good changing to chaotic good, with a good bit of naïveté and idealism at the beginning which slowly erodes, largely thanks to certain foils in his party (hello Morrigan).

I'm sure he'll be somewhere on the "good" side of the scale regardless, as I have issues playing evil characters too. Or even just dickish characters.

I don't like to play "bad" characters, either... I mean, O.K, some of them were manipulative but they aways did good things (even if it was just to gain something in the end). I guess that's a little chaotic good?

My first Warden has a heart of gold. A sweetheart with rainbows and bunnies marching along his side.

My second Warden (the one in my avatar) isn't "evil", but he is a little more selfish (he used the blood ritual to obtain "pleasure" from the Desire Demon), and pragmatic (kept the Anvil of the Void, for example).

Surely my Hawke will be a good man.

Yeah, I'm going from lawful good to chaotic good this time. Granted, with the different backgrounds (my canon Warden was a female Dalish), there will be heaps of differences between my Warden and Hawke already.

It really depends on how the story unfolds in DA 2 and what sort of choices we have to make and the influence of my party members (maybe Hawke wants to impress one of them or irritate one of them?). It's really too hard to say so far. With my first Origins play through, I played it pretty blindly (hadn't followed up with the hype pre-release so had no idea what to expect from companions or plot points) and I intend to go into DA 2 with the same mindset (that is, I will have to cut myself off from the forums when too much information comes flooding in).

I can't see myself "planning" my Hawke out, I'd rather just go with the flow and see where the game takes me but I'll certainly try to be less goody-twoshoes this time around.

My warden was essentially "Angelic Evil" or maybe "Heroic Noble" is more accurate:

Believed it was his place to rule since he was born a noble, mission was mainly to survive and seek power.

Not that he particularly enjoyed doing bad things or lacked the capacity to feel empathy but that wouldn't stop him from sacrificing elves to get a power boost or keeping the golems going to fight the blight.

As for how I'll play Hawke; well I'll see how that goes, what feels natural as the game progresses.

I played a paragon last time, and I'm sure I will this time. I just can't seem to help myself. ;)

I did consider making a warrior Hawke because my Warden was a human female mage, and I thought repeating that for Dragon Age 2 was sort of lame of me. But then I saw default Hawke, and heard of his/her connection to the Amells, and decided I didn't care.

I find it kind of sad that a lot of forumites I've seen seem to be planning to roleplay a character that is basically the same as their [main] Warden.

My main Hawke is going to be quite different from my main Warden.

That's what surprises me. I intend to have quite different character.

My Warden was a male human noble warrior (classic sword and shield), generally polite and trying to do the right thing, though not shying away from tough choices, and occasionally going a bit too far in his righteous punishment of evil people. I didn't take sides between mages and templars, though I was a bit sympathetic to mages.

Hawke, I would go for full on jerk. Not an evil man, just a double-crossing, greedy rogue with a bit twisted sense of justice. Not entirely deprived of goodness but in most situations pretty selfish and obsessed with political power. And full on Chantry supporter. I'm still undecided if I would play as a female... I've always found it a bit strange playing as the opposite sex.

If possible my Hawke will be older, tougher and a bit more sardonic, in comparison to my Warden. I'd also like to have him be quite zealous. My Warden appreciated the Chantry and had belief on a basic level, but he had never really given the issue much thought. I want my Hawke to have religion as a much more central part of his personality and worldview. I'd like him to have experienced a religious experience a bit like Leliana.

Him being convinced that the Chantry's teachings are correct, but at the same time being weighed down by his apostate sister and the father's legacy. All this should create interesting conflict and possibilities for character growth. :)

My Warden was a ruthless, pragmatic, machiavellian, noble who hated mages and had a strict 'join me or die' policy.
So I intend to have my Hawke be ultimately a good man although he'll sacrifice anything for his family.
Also because my warden was much more prudish when it came to romance (didn't take sex casualy) I intend to have my Hawke be a bit of a ladies man.
