To be honest, I don't have Awakening, but I've heard a lot about Velanna and read through her dialogue... from what I can tell, she would easily be my favorite Awakening companion and my Warden's preferred choice of romantic partner if she was an option (I can't see why Velanna wouldn't enjoy the company of an elf mage who teaches her blood magic, and who allied with Zathrian to lay the groundwork for her plan to eventually retaking of the Dales).

Anyway, for those who have played the game, Velanna, plox?

No I did not like her that much.

Honestly I found her to be so offensive, and blind that I could not stand her.

As Anders so nicely put it:

Anders: You know that chip on your shoulder? I think it has replaced your head.

Eh, I can't say I blame her all that much. My main disagreement with her, at least in-character, is that hatred alone is impractical. But she has tremendous potential.

You know what? I liked her.

She was cranky, and angry, and cold, and then she kind of grew on me.

So yea, more Velanna.

She's another BioWare B*tch! Image IPB Except she isn't like Morrigan, her walls don't crumble if you get my drift.  She was a great character, one of my Awakening favourites, along with Anders and Oghren. Image IPB

I can never trigger her quest encounter, so she is mainly a bug for me. Her ending is terrible if you don't do her quest, so it is a bit of a game-stopper...

I really like her, and I think that post game, she eventually got romantically involved with my Warden and Leli, due to her changed views on humans and her frienship with my Warden. Or so I like to daydream lol.

In seriousness though, Velanna could have been like Morrigan, but Awakening is way too short for that sort of interaction and growth to happen. I really forced and rushed my way through the friendship with her so that I would be close to 100 before I went off for the final battle. It's a real pity, as I would really have liked to get to know her better, see what drives her, help her come to terms with what happened with her sister and so on. In the end, I got 2 slides for her, one showing she had changed, but one where she was always upset with me because I didn't deal with the Architect. At least she lived and was changed from the hate machine she was.

In many ways I guess, it's a problem with all Awakening characters. So much potential, but just not enough time to truly cultivate the relationships like you had in Origins, with the exception of Oghren I guess.

I didn't really like her. Didn't hate her, but she wasn't exactly a favourite. Since I often play mages and also really like Anders, I had no need for her at all.

I also play mages and while I really liked Anders I opted for some eye candy and got Velanna. Four blokes running around is boring. She's ok in my view. Not terribly unpleasant, not terribly pleasant. She has a certain bias for humans and in her fervor to defend her sister she equates elves' suffering with the darkspawn situation. Other than that, she's cool.

Man I thought I was the only one who loved Velanna. Grey Delisle's voice coupled with blond, elven Morrigan looks with an even sharper tongue and insatiable wrath. *drools*

It was fitting her "friendship" bar actually goes up to "Love" if you gift her and talk to her enough. I had to get it pretty damn high to finally trigger her personal quest and damn if it isn't short but fulfilling.

You really can't patronize her, and sometimes you gotta tell her like it is before your dirty shem/dwarf/dull-eared words get through to her. Now I guess i gotta write a Velanna story...

I can understand why she's attractive to some people, but I'm not one of them. To me, she was just an even more jaded Morrigan, and since I'm not overly fond of Morrigan, I'm even less so of of Velanna.

Aww, and its not just her looks that get me... its her voice, and the angry-angry hippos that eat every thought and notion that is even remotely good and pleasant that enters her head thus causing her to go Varterral on everyone that I find sexy too.

And EVERYONE seemingly "picks on her" even bloody Justice pulls a Wynne and lectures her bony tuchus. She is good times whether she's having a good time or not. I swear she's one gamma bomb test away from becoming what she hates most.<3

I kind of hated her. Not only is she an unrepentant mass murderer, she's a really b***y unrepentant mass murderer. I refused to make her a warden thinking I could lock her up or something, but no.... They made me let her just walk away. Anyway, next time I'll make her a warden. Maybe I'll learn to like her better, but I doubt it.

Ugh, Velanna. If they were going to write a Dalish stereotype, I wish they had at least made her interesting. On my Dalish PCs especially, I wanted to b*tch slap her back to the Creators.

It isn't like her grudges are illegitimate, at least in my opinion; she's just taking them out on the wrong people. She should set her sights higher, attack the institutions that are keeping elves down instead of random little people.

SO yes lets allow an crazy powerful and racist mage to run amok and kill all the bad bad humans.
That is going to help! :pinched:

Amok? She's still under my command, and I need someone with her will and drive to unite the Dalish after Zathrian decides to eventually bugger off. With luck, my influence will at least make her more accepting of the city elves; we need every pointed ear we can get for the revolution.

Double post, but having actually seen a scene of Velanna's...

I sort of thought that she disliked city elves for being too close to humans, but it seems that it's only their submissive attitudes that she's annoyed with. This has made her even more awesome.

That sounds really healthy for the Dalish.  Image IPB

Velanna has been cast out of her clan.  Don't think she's going to be much help in any plan to unite the Dalish.

Not just the Dalish, all elves. And I think it could be done, with the right allies.

Velanna has been cast out of her clan.  Don't think she's going to be much help in any plan to unite the Dalish.

I think Zathrian would be helpful there, though I admit I'm making rather a lot of RP-based extrapolations.

Perhaps more importantly, Velanna looks to be poor minion material. As her clan's First, she fomented a split and took a good fraction of the clan with her when she disagreed with the Keeper. She joins the Warden just to get darkspawn-sensing abilities to further her own ends. She just sets off alarm bells all down the Evil Overlord checklist.

If you recruit her for your revolution, don't say I didn't warn you when animated trees grab you with impaling roots at a very inopportune moment, and she attempts to rally your own forces to march under her own banner. :)

Recruiting Velanna is worth it for this exchange:

Velanna: Are you interested in hearing why I was exiled?

Warden: If I say yes will I get a tongue lashing?

Velanna: You make it sound like I'm some kind of shrill harpy

Warden: That's because you ARE a shrill harpy!

Velanna: You! Ugh!

I usually recruit her but I once was a playing a no nonsense character who very quickly decided to put and end to all her bs after she retreated to the abandoned campsite:

Velanna: Will you at least let me die next to my own?

Warden: Gladly!

*Two handed critical strike on Velanna*

Warden: Done and done.

Ah, but all that happens pre-approval (and pre-romance-that-I-admit-I-just-made-up). Also, she's not a minion, she's an equal.

Who are you picturing as allies?

Zathrian always ends up dead in my games so hard for me to speculate on that.  Lanaya is a peacemaker and tries to mediate with the humans, so I doubt she's your revolutionary leader.  Basically what you're suggesting is a Dalish civil war mixed with an elven uprising.  You would probably see most of the Dalish in Ferelden wiped out if that were to happen.
