Ok. So, ive had BG2 since it came out. And ive played it on and off, never really beaten it, i think the furthest ive gotten was up to the Drow place?
I keep on getting distracted by other games, and then rerolling when i come back, Ive played so many characters its rediculous, ive pretty much memorised all the dialogue from cutscenes up until going to spellhold....
Anyway, reinstalled, Installed BGT. Planning on going from start to finish, BG1 to TOB.
At this point, ive already started 2 characters, and rerolled them, First, a paladin, thought i'd just go with Carsomyr... but then annoyed with the idea of going a goody two shoes again... Played the good path every attempt before now, I Dont care if i havnt seen the end as good, i think i wanna do it as evil.
So, evil sort of restricts what classes i can be, and im having a tough time deciding. Ive read that AC becomes somewhat useless in TOB unless you can have a rediculous save.... Regardless, i was thinking of making my main a tank, And aiming for that retarded AC. So im curious, what classes make the best tanks in the game, even in TOB?
Alternatively i might just go Dual weild warrior or something, and just tear things to peices.... Any input would be appreciated!
Planning on beating BG2... Finally. Help with class..

Arcane magic and (to a lesser extent) divine magic are what makes good tanks.
Blade (bard kit) is a pretty amazing tank. Ranger/Cleric is nice too, but requires you to be good. Sorcerer probably doesn't need any advertising; he'll tank with the best of them.
The Cleric/Mage has the added benefit of cleric spells, but doesn't go up in levels as fast.
The Swashbuckler can only use spells from scrolls, but with UAI and his kit bonus, he can develop into a tank too (at a later stage of the game).

I wouldn't go evil if you've never gone beyond Spellhold. The game simply isn't very friendly to evildoers. Not that it's uplayable for evil characters, you'll just make it a bit more annoying. If you're going the evil road, make sure to install the happy party patch so evil party members won't leave when your reputation gets too high.
AC is almost entirely meaningless by the time you get to TOB. It's VERY useful during the BG1 part of the game though.
Resistances and immunities are far more important than ac in TOB. If you want a tank, go for either a barbarian or a berserker. I think berserkers have a slight edge, but others feel barbarians have. In the end, both classes will serve you well.
Pick a dwarf for the constitution and saving throws bonuses.

Thanks for your replies. So dissapointing to hear AC is meaningless, and Arcane casters are the tanks
I really wanted to go a huge fighter type character, with insane armor, and be an immovable rock. Maybe ill try it out with a Berserker still, Not too sure what to do now

Note that if you're playing BGT, AC IS useful during the largest part of the game. It's insanely useful during the BG1 part, still good in SoA and only becomes less useful (to near useless near the end of the game) in late SoA/ToB.
The problem with AC is that AC does not keep up with THACO. Probably the best tank in the game is the Bard kit "Blade" or maybe a F/M multi/dualclass. Even Aerie can be a near invulnerable tank at higher levels.
That does NOT mean a huge half orc waving a 2h sword is useless. In fact, a half orc barbarian specialized in twohanders is a lot of fun to play. If you like that, go for it.
My advice would be to create a barbarian and go for fighting with a shield and axes/hammers during the first part of the game. Later on, specialize in either twohanders or two weapon fighting. Barbarians get damage resistances later in the game. Combine that with the Hardiness feat and the correct items and you can become highly resistant to physical damage in ToB. Since enemies in ToB will hit you no matter what, the ability to negate the damage is a lot more useful than a high AC.
One last thing: the most efficient characters are not necessarily the most fun to play. You can finish Baldur's Gate with every class and every kit. Go for the class YOU have fun with.

Damnit, another post lost to the caprice of my keyboard.
Don't you think that a blade with AC -24, 4½ attacks (9 Improved Hasted), strength 25, 164HP (more with Vampiric Touch) and immunity to every kind of weapon and spell is pretty much what you're looking for?
Don't think that just because it doesn't say Fighter at the door, a blade is any less of a warrior.
Yes, he will usually less damage than a Fighter/Mage, who can easily reach 10 APR, and if you're only looking for that, the FM is the way to go. Otherwise though, UAI and HLA traps make the blade much more interesting.
Don't fret yet.Telkoth wrote...

Did you just say "near invulnerable"?Flamedance wrote...

Oops..apologies for insulting Aerie. I meant COMPLETELY invulnerable, of course.

Who cares if Aerie can tank. She's still a whiny little... Gnnargh! CHEB SMASH!
As for AC, it can be redundant in TOB, I know that much. Everything that comes before that is debatable.
If you're looking for real stonewalls, F/D, R/C and F/M all have the right idea in my opinion. I'd have gone Ranger/Cleric until I found the fix for Druids. Went with that for RP purposes.

Have you ever tried a Blade? Very entertaining kit to play. Extremely deadly too, if you gear up properly. Much more fun than a Kensai/Mage for example. Trickier and more rewarding!

Thanks for the input. LTD, i had tried a solo run with a Blade, with Tactics mod, ended up getting to the Underdark + thats when i got distracted by another game
The constant buffing started to annoy me.
In the end, ive decided to follow a mix of Flamedance's advice. Play a Barbarian, and, go with what you want. Not gonna go with the OP Halforc, instead, a Halfling Barbarian! Good ole halflings... Sure i wont be as effective at smashing things, but once i rage up, it'll help alot. Also, since its BGT, im looking very forward to the bonuses to strength i can rack up along the way.

Hey, i like the halfling idea. Sometimes builds like that are far more interesting to play than the traditional 'optimal' builds most people tend to go for. Go for it and inform us of your progress:)
