Well, I just revisited that whole thread that Maria brought up (thanks Abandonment), and I see both sides here.
On the one hand, it's always kind of ridiculous that any character (male/female, human/elf/dwarf) can just pick up any old set of armor and put it on and have it fit like magic. So, certain characters being restricted to certain armors makes a certain kind of sense. On the other hand, I fully approve of eliminating class-based restrictions on types of armor in favor of strength-based limitations. That to me clearly makes more sense. And the idea of every piece of armor you find being labeled "Isabela" or "Bethany" or "Hawke" is pretty unappealing. Surely, some armors would fit more than one person easily enough.
With regard to characters being individuals, and wearing what they want rather than what I want, that makes sense to me. On the other hand, if some people want to fiddle with and/or reinterpret the personalities that Bioware has provided, with a different vision of what so-and-so would want to wear, I am also in favor of permitting that. It's sort of like playing an US warden in Awakenings. I might not do it, but why stop them? (Unless it creates story problems later on, which in this case it could).
I think my ideal solution would be if no armor were ready to wear when you picked it up (or possibly had been damaged), and you would had to go to a blacksmith or tanner in order to re-size it, which would then be an opportunity for it to turn into a customized look for the person you have it re-sized for. On the other hand, that could be a big hassle. So, I would enjoy it (along with bringing back weight limits to your inventory and making enemies drop the armor and weapons they are using), but I can understand why others might not (particularly the more casual audience they're also trying to attract), and why it might be an awful lot of resources to commit for kind of quirky little feature.
But what's the alternative? Cut scenes after certain boss drops where one of your characters picks up a piece of armor and reflects about how it will fit perfectly? That seems a little cheesy. And what happens if that character isn't with you at the right moment?
For the most part, I trust Bioware here, but I am nervous. I don't imagine our characters' armors will just improve magically at certain level thresholds or anything, or stay the same throughout the game, but I could see the framed narrative being used such that the time passing between parts of Varic's tale is the only time that companions' armor is upgraded. That would lose a lot of the excitement of finding fun new stuff, for me. More likely, each piece of armor we find will be labeled with who it is for. There might be ways to pull that off OK, but if that's all there is I think it will feel pretty artificial and strange.
I have my fingers crossed that they have something better up their sleeve here, though.
