I use 2 mages(healer and dps) and rogue and shield tank. with shield wall threaten and taunt. I really have no problems keeping the warroir up. I pickoff the ranged attackers with my mage while my rogue backstabs whatever the tank is on.

the best combo i have found is cone of cold/stone fist. instant shatter to non-boss types, and big damage to those.

cheers!

I don't know if anyone has suggested this, but one of my favourite tactics is to charge in my Tank and draw as much aggro as I can and then have Force field cast on him/her then just drop an inferno over them and all of the melee foes are nicely roasted.

EDIT - Stone fist or a critical hit will shatter a petrified or frozen oppenent usually instantly killing them.

Not sure but I believe Kiting may have originated in EQ as a soloing tactic? At least in that game it was perfected to a f'n nuiscance anyway. Basically a person would put as many Dots on a mob as possible and constantly run/keep out of range of its attack, but not far enough so you lose aggro and the Mob wanders off. The cool thing about EQ was you could kill steal a mob if some drOOd was trying to kite all the mobs in the area you were in. Greedy little wood elves. At least WoW put a stop to a lot of that which is one of its few redeeming factors.

I've been using the Cone of Cold tactic pretty much on melee then throwing a ranged CC spell like blizzard/Inferno/Sleep on the mages and archers. If there is a higher level ranged mob I'll send Leliana after it to chop it up into little pieces... tiny little pieces...

Try and take advantage of the environment whenever possible. Sometimes hiding your party behind a column or barricade can make the difference. Use doorways as "choke points" so as not to get surrounded.

There's no shame in kiting. Got me past the Ogre in Ostagar and another in the Fade...

Most of the games I've played were very frustrating because all the combat effects never worked (stun, paralyze fear, etc) or had very little impact. But not DAO, it's pretty cool to have a mage that doesn't have to exclusively use "magic missile" and combat skills that do something else than extra damage.

Same could be said about stealth which I use to sabotage many ambushes

Eh. Kiting sorta sucks   It works, but some of us would rather avoid it.

As for a smarter way to handle that, stun him or slow him.  He's either gonna latch on to your mage(flee to a better firing position, they should not be easy to get at if you can manage it), or a tank(Force Field).  If he's on the tank, use that as a chance for a rogue to get in crazy backstab damage.  Use Poison, and Frost/Flaming Weapons.  If it goes after the mage, drop a stun on it as fast as you can - you can get through them without kiting and not lose anyone.

If I get the jump on a group of enemies I'll cast earthquake to make them go off balance and falter around followed by Tempest. This causes an emense amount of damage even if they only get stuck in it for a couple of rounds. This is especially effective against mages since they can't concentrate to cast many spells while in the earthquake and they lack the constitution to save against falling.

...Which game are you guys playing? I'm playing this game called Dragon Age: Origin. I kill zombies in armor or wolves for 2 minutes and then I talk to npcs for 50 minutes.

Always remember you don't have to stand and fight right where you are; running back to a chokepoint or around a corner to get to a defensible position or to get out of line of sight of a ranged attacker can make a huge difference.

Tactic settings seem to be my achilles heal.

I do very well when I continuously pause but I would appreciate some good tactical inputs or links to some...thx

Part of that is trial and error, but I have a better suggestion:

Nobody's going to come up with something just right to your play style. BUT! If, when you pause'n'play, you examine what you're doing, tactics to automate should emerge, even if it's as simple as "attack my target".(For reference, Enemy targeted by main character, attack)

Another good tactic:

Doorway cones of AoE (Lightning Cold ect.) hide one (or two) fighters on either side of door with a mage right in front of it. Pop the door open and wait for the enemies to see you and rush for the door, slap down the AoE cone then close in on them with the fighters. Back the mage off and pummel. Gets in a good amount of damage before anything else starts happening. (I used this one alot in BG2).

(If you're really tricky you can close the door and buy your team another couple seconds to react. This doesn't always seem to work though.)

Get Mana Clash and laugh maniacally whenever an enemy spellcaster makes an appearance.

Nothing like seeing a guy take 700+ damage and not be able to cast spells anymore (assuming he lives, which he wont unless he's orange).

And its AoE for added fun.

With a Mage as MC I like to :

1> Ranged pull the enemy with my Archer

2> Block a choke point with the Glyph of Repulsion when the leading mobs are at medium range

3> Grease Fire just past the Glyph

4> Have my tank (Alistair) in Fire resist gear with Defender/Aggressive Tactics set keep the mobs in the grease fire

5> Have my archer and 2nd mage focus fire on enemy mages and archers with long range spells and ranged attacks.

6> Throw in a Paralysis Glyph for any Melee mobs that are still standing when the Grease Fire goes out

7> Repeat ! (Grease + Fireball will have well and truly recharged by this point)

Have cleared huge battles using these tactics with minimal damage to anyone save the Tank (who has two mages Healing and Stamina buffing him). Have tried similar tactics with Inferno and Storm of the Century but I get more fatal friendly fire that way and the cast times are horrendous. All of the spells required for this tactis are quick casting.

Something I've noticed is highly effective:

1: Cone of Cold, make sure it hits as many enemies as possible.

2: Break out the auto-crits, followed by other heavy hitters, to shatter enemies. Stonefist works too, if you have it.

This can get you through a lot of combat without much damage, which is great.

In an especially desperate situation, you may even be able to move the battle to take advantage of friendly npcs. That got me to the end of the night in Redcliffe with just Alister left standing. Be careful with this, though. Friendly fire will hit them, and you have zero control over what they do.

I have been experimenting with using two 2H warriors (Sten and my PC)

Sten pulls the aggro on a group. Once a group of mobs is all together, I unleash lots of AOE Melee attacks.

I set up the 2H Swords with paralyzing runes. Between Stunning Blows, Knockback, chance of paralysis from the rune, we overpower groups pretty quick.

I also set up the poison skill on my PC. Being able to follow up a devasting Two handed Sweep with a Firebomb or similiar is very nice, as well as adding stunning poison to the blade. Once in combat, the trick is to just debilitate them and chop em down to paste.

I'd like to set up a tactic that for mages that petrifies then stone-fists them. But, the enemy status menu does not include "petrified". Maybe "paralysis" would do it, but then there's a paralysis spell and glyphs.

Instead of Kitting, whenever your squishy grab aggro, move them behind the tank and attack the creature chasing the squishy with said tank. Usually that pulls the aggro to the tank.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned here, because it's not a real tactic - but check the wiki (and threads like this) for specific fights! I spent... an embarrassing number of hours on a boss in the Deep Roads until I found out about proper positioning.

This morning (early this morning) I spent a good amount of time (about 2 hours, more or less) fighting the Revenant monster that is in the Circle of Mages tower. That fight truly tested my endurance, as I had Morrigan, Wynne and myself as mages and Leilane with me. That is where I have learned to put the full tactical system to use, as I died time and time and time again to that... thing.

Now I have a REALLY good understanding of the tactics system, and although I could not go any further than it's final destruction (had to get some sleep at some point before work), I am confident in my newfound knowledge to get my companions to assist me in whatever fights may come.

That being said, that Force Field was a god-send, as I was aiming for the the Telekinetic Weapons spell on Morrigan, but I will be using the Force Field for quite some time I think.

It is quite possibly the king of single-target control.

my tactic is as following:

1) send in warrior so all enemy engage him
2) taunt em to make sure ALL enemies focus him
3) force field the warrior so hes invulnerable for the duration of the force field
4) while enemies attacking useless into the force field protected warrior, kill em off with rest
5) if force field wares of and still enemies standing, start of with number 2 or 3

im not using a healer in my party ;)

cheers

crushing prison him and let the resounding shockwave kill them all? :P:ph34r:

...  Please read the title.  Or the opening post.  The idea here is to get past kiting.  I, for one, refuse the idea that that is how the game is supposed ot be played.
