Can both Friendship and Rivalry lead to Romance?

I just read a couple of posts from Mr. Gaider in the thread for the new trailer concerning all companions having Friendship and Rivalry dialogue trees. It sounds really awesome so far and it's definatly an improvement over the old system where it was friendship or nothing.

Sounds like it will lead to alot more interesting interactions between characters. Where a companion may disagree with your opinions but will continue to follow/aid you out of respect.

I am curious however if the Rivalry path can lead to romance?

I'm thinking along the lines of Inara and Malcolm in the TV show Firefly or Han and Leia in Star Wars. Those relationships always had alot of heated arguments and tension (don't think i would classify them as Rivalries exactly) but in both cases they took a turn towards romance.

It would be really cool to see something like that.

Would anyone else be interested in seeing this?

I was just wondering this exact thing as well!

If they made a rivalry/romance I think I would have to offer Darth Gaider a human sacrifice.

Yes, Gaider said as much one or two days ago. Linky
The post is interpretable, sure, but I don't think they'd implement such an awesome feature for friendships only.

I was in that discussion, but I don't remember him saying much about romances.

Mr. Gaider said something along the lines of the companion not having the same world views as you. A companion who is good would not like you working for bandits, a companion who is bad not liking when you donate money or time to help people, etc. Also, Mr. Gaider said that there will be a climax point where you may be able to argue your point and reason and win, changing the attitude of the companion on the issue and possibly making your friendship closer. Arguements not won could maybe backfire and cause your friendship to sour even more.

In the real world, disagreeing with someone doesn't mean disliking someone. In DA, disagree means minus approval. This isn't necessarily true, and forces one to not follow ones gut because you lose out on the approval bonuses and can lose companions.

Examples:

Defiling the ashes or siding with abominations should equal an approval hit with Leliana.
Saying you don't believe in the maker should not. Leliana should respect you being honest with her.

It should be possible to disagree and still get a positive approval rating. You shouldn't be shoehorned into being a yes-man just to keep your companions happy.

I just wonder if the rivalry system will still allow for companions to hate to truly dislike Hawke but still be in the party.

Dear BioWare,

I would like to make women fall madly in love with me by being an inconsiderate, competitive, douchebag. Make it happen!

I remember reading that once you get to min approval (the end of the Rivalry path), you either change their views on stuff, or they leave

I think I answered this specifically in the last thread about this, but yes-- you can have a romance on both the rivalry and friendship path. The character of the romance will be different, depending on the character in question.

It's probably important to re-iterate that friendship/rivalry is not quite the same as approval/disapproval from DAO. You don't gain friendship or rivalry based on how nice or rude you are to someone in DA2, but rather the actions you take and opinions you express on their hot-button issues... in particular when it comes to their personal quests. Does this mean that someone who is rude to a follower can still have a romance with them? Technically yes-- but the option to be rude or nice isn't something we deliberately try to stick in because it doesn't have a bearing on their approval here. So any comments you make will generally grow out of opinions you've already expressed, and probably will make a friendship/rivalry adjustment more or less pronounced depending on how you expressed it.

Hope that makes sense.

Makes sense to me. Something that frustrated me in DAO was Morrigan's stance on helping people being a waste of time. Seemed like the only responses were rudely saying "I Disagree." Which would net you -app with Morrigan or "I Agree, screw helping people!" Which would net you -app with almost everyone else.

I understand that it was like that because game development has limitations so it's really not a big issue but all the same, it's really exciting to hear about this Rivalry mechanic! Seems like a pretty decent work around of this issue.

Thanks for responding Mr. Gaider!

P.S. Sorry I missed your original comment on this topic, I searched around a bit but being on my lunch break at work when i wrote it and really wanting an answer I do admit my search wasn't very thorough.

I get the system as you have been discribing it and it does seem to be a nice improvement. Anything that adds to the depth and realism of characters personality, flexability and their reactions to your actions/dialog is a plus.

How intriguing. It makes me wonder how many permutations there are for a given romance. I am sure the script delvers will have a field day with that one. I doubt I could manage enough repeat plays to catch it all if I tried. I must say, this is a welcome change and I look forward to seeing how it pans out in practice.

The idea of having a romance based on the kind of tension that comes along with heated disagreement and emotionally charged exchanges ....

Whom would you like me to offer as the human sacrifice? Simply pick the appropriate forum member and it shall be done.

Rival-romances sound like a great idea! Makes me look forward to trying it out even more. I got tired of the yes-man system in DA:O. This will add a good bit of replay value to the game, since that means each romance has two different paths to do it. :o I wonder if they had to cut back on the number of romanceable party members to make for better quality?

I am expecting pushed-up-against-the-wall heated rivalry kisses mid-argument.

Obviously, DA needs an interupt system.

This sounds so exciting =) That there are different paths to follow for friendship and romance will make it so much funnier to replay. Imagine that it will feel a bit more realistic also. After romancing or befriending the same persons for a few games there comes a time when you know all the lines. Being able to take a different route sounds excellent.

Well, the OP mentioned them. But Slap Slap Kiss is so common nowadays.

Indeed...and here I thought I read the original post carefully. I should remember to visit my bed some nights, I guess.
